The joy of living today, tomorrow

893

After writing a piece on our European season for the forthcoming CQN Magazine I read the excellent contribution from SFTB this morning.  It is only natural that we live in the moment but for the last 70 years of the 20th century Celtic fans, more than anyone else, viewed each day in its historical context.

Older generations would have had little choice but to keep their history alive during the lost decades between the mid-20s and mid-60s.  7-1 and the Coronation Cup, each magnificent and modest in their own way, were the highlights, while the legend of Jimmy McGrory more than anyone established what was known as the Celtic Way.

Then came Lisbon.  In an instant, all that history was eclipsed.  New heroes, one of whom recalled to me he was told Celtic would amount to nothing with him in the team by a ‘fan’ a few years earlier, changed everything, but for this most historical of clubs, the inheritance was not all positive.

If Jimmy McGrory established Celtic as a remarkable goal-scoring team, the incessant attacking that afternoon in Lisbon cast an unattainable shadow.  It proved Celtic could win the European Cup by playing fabulous football but set a template we were cursed to attempt to follow.

The rules of the off-field game have changed often since those days, no more so than this season, when Celtic grew from a team who were penned into their own penalty box by HJK Helsinki, who needed a goal to knock us out of Europe in August, from a team the Turin media were joyous when Juventus beat home and away.  Thoughts of ‘Maybe we could win this” have since emerged in Turin.

I’ve loved every minute of this season, from the last minute header in Moscow to the last minute header in Dingwall. Adding context to it is a joy for one of our tomorrows.

    Ouch …!!!!!

  2. Re the bedroom tax..

How many homes are 1 bedroom?

Of these how many are over occupied?

How many 2 bedroom homes are under occupied?

No wonder joined up thinking is discouraged in this country, basic arithmetic will prove the bedroom tax a sham if anyone goes to the bother of collating the stats.

By the way, that free kick Milan had just before Barca’s fourth!!

If that was Celtic some of us would have spontainiously combusted, amateurish is not the word.

    Re: Bedroom Tax,

Have only read bits about it but, I understand it’s only people on benefits it affects.

How long before it then affects people on Minimum Wage, £10k, £15k, £20k etc. etc.?

As for IDS, well, he was welcomed into the Parkhead area when the Tories were in opposition and, he was full of SHITE even then but, the locals loved him :-(((

  5. Thats a rough one BT, broke my own leg a couple of years ago while playing Golf (Don’t laugh, its true). Must say apart from initial accident the entire process & recovery was completely painless but its a crazy way to put down a couple of months. I became a Killer Sudoku expert and re-read about 10 of my old Celtic Books whilst waiting to get my plaster removed.

It’s pathetically frightening….the bankers ruin the economy, and the politicians, who didn’t do anything about it since they were enjoying their expenses perks, hammer the poor to get the books balanced ……same old…nothing changes….feck them all

They are good at getting the ref to give them the benefit of the doubt, if that makes sense. Canny or perhaps rather sleekit. Although tonight, and in a certain other game recently, the envelope was pushed so far it ceased to be an envelope!

Not the sort of football I want to see so doubly pleased Barca went through.

Another bonus is that there will be no repeat of the Milan Juve final which was so bad I’m sure der cardigan was managing both teams!

Eddie izzard is a funny comedian who pretends to be quite scatter brained. He shares half of TSD’s own background in that he is from boarding school and expresses himself as a transvestite.

He probably comes onto TSDs radar because he is a strange form of Englishmen who thinks it was worthwhile to learn French in order to tell his jokes in the language of his audience, rather than merely shout the jokes out loudly and slowly.

Don’t know what Maggie McGill did to get sent to the naughty corner with me and Eddie.

Can’t help drawing parallels with today’s SFL counter proposals after much deliberation and the fabulous “Speed 3” Father Ted episode. After months/ years of “blah blah old firm bad for Scottish football, blah blah strangling local family clubs, blah blah wish they would just go to England” the concept of we’ll include 2 colt teams seems a bit like thwarting Pat Mustard’s dastardly plan to blow up Father Dougal by “saying another mass!”
