The joy of living today, tomorrow

893

After writing a piece on our European season for the forthcoming CQN Magazine I read the excellent contribution from SFTB this morning.  It is only natural that we live in the moment but for the last 70 years of the 20th century Celtic fans, more than anyone else, viewed each day in its historical context.

Older generations would have had little choice but to keep their history alive during the lost decades between the mid-20s and mid-60s.  7-1 and the Coronation Cup, each magnificent and modest in their own way, were the highlights, while the legend of Jimmy McGrory more than anyone established what was known as the Celtic Way.

Then came Lisbon.  In an instant, all that history was eclipsed.  New heroes, one of whom recalled to me he was told Celtic would amount to nothing with him in the team by a ‘fan’ a few years earlier, changed everything, but for this most historical of clubs, the inheritance was not all positive.

If Jimmy McGrory established Celtic as a remarkable goal-scoring team, the incessant attacking that afternoon in Lisbon cast an unattainable shadow.  It proved Celtic could win the European Cup by playing fabulous football but set a template we were cursed to attempt to follow.

The rules of the off-field game have changed often since those days, no more so than this season, when Celtic grew from a team who were penned into their own penalty box by HJK Helsinki, who needed a goal to knock us out of Europe in August, from a team the Turin media were joyous when Juventus beat home and away.  Thoughts of ‘Maybe we could win this” have since emerged in Turin.

I’ve loved every minute of this season, from the last minute header in Moscow to the last minute header in Dingwall. Adding context to it is a joy for one of our tomorrows.

oldtim asked me to mention to you that he is going for a meal pre match on Saturday

  2. Do you need any audited accounts or “going concern” notices before you can field a colts team, or is it just the same as fielding a normal team with 18 – 20 year olds?

Did Milan field 1 or 2 18 year olds tonight??

  3. Let the English go on about the best league in the world. The best two club teams are Spanish as is the most enjoyable league to watch. Is there anyway to get Spanish football only on the box?

WHY DO THE SCOTTISH MEDIA HARDLY MENTION CELTIC’s FANTASTIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE CL, IN FAVOUR OF SLAGGING US ON OUR (RESULTANT),DOMESTIC FORM AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY …… I COULD TELL YOU WHY BUT I DON’T WANT BANNED FROM CQN …….DOBs

Seen the post from SFTB and the post the other day from Saltires In Seville(sp).

Yours and theirs were equally inspirational.

On a lower note, driving back from the airport this evening some maniac on BBC scotland was implying we were jointly supporting some Celtic/sevco ‘colt’ set-up. If we get out of here then lets hope it’ for good !

Bar wasn’t too busy, seems the rain is keeping everybody at home, anyways, couple of guards watched the game, one a Barca fan, the other Real, they were a gas, had five half pints of beer as well.

When they left at the end of the game, they told everyone who was driving to take it easy as some of the country roads had lots of mud on them and they were slippy.

  15. Sannabhoy,

I agree, but , if we put forward the idea of putting a second team into another league, we would come up against a very well organised propaganda machine, with lots of non attributable threats about UEFA sending us to the badfire.

If of course the Scottish football authorities promote / endorse the concept of us putting in a second team , then it would be difficult for the MSM to denounce us if we decided to launch a third team. Indeed it would be extremely amusing to watch them try to criticise us.

IMHO this looks like a good way to let other people do our dirty work.

  16. Bedroom tax

Sorry to go political here, just heard on the news that if your son or daughter is serving in the Forces you will be exempt .

My sister in law who cared for her mother over the last few years in a three bedroom house with her son who moved out a couple of months ago now faces a huge drop in income.

Her Housing Benefit will now drop by £28!pw that she will have to pay her landlord. She is now facing up to the fact that at 50 yrs of age she may have to move into bedsit and leave her family home.

She has never had a mortgage or a bank account. Why does she have to pay ?

    Why?

    Why?

Barca followed the same pattern as the other teams in the CL ……domestic performance suffered while they concentrated on the CL……but don’t tell the LLthat, or the negatonians on CQN …..NEIL LENNON, TAKE A BOW……YOU TOOK US TO THE PEAK THIS SEASON…. and, please, more of the same next season……..

  20. Watching Barca take Milano apart tonight was balm to the soul. Having avidly watched fitba for more than 50 years, Messi is the man for me. Doesn’t matter how many markers are on him, he mostly comes up with genious stuff. He is the man!
