The lesson from Arbroath

760

So what did we learn yesterday?  Primarily we learned that you can’t replace 8 players from a team which won 0-4 at Tynecastle while leaving the core element of the team in place.  It is justifiable to be critical of the performances of experienced key players who didn’t perform, but Wanyama, Brown, Matthews, Miku didn’t become bad players overnight, nor did Tony Watt, what happened is the essence of our team – the system – was missing.

The effort was there but the focus which makes this Celtic team wasn’t.  In many ways this was the perfect setup for a Champions League game against a team too many people are telling me we’ll turn over.  Our Christmas Cup Final on Wednesday will require every element that existed against Barcelona last month.

The knives are out for Spartak’s foreign players, who are taking the blame for the clubs disintegration since losing at home to Celtic, both in the press and online fan polls.  We may see a more Russian looking Spartak on Wednesday.  Which will be no bad thing.

I think it was just putting away that early chance and Fraser playing so well.

Scoring at home is a problem. Packed defences.

That’s true. John McGlynn is maybe being made to look stupid because he is having to pay the consequences for the previous over-spending by Hearts coaches and management.

Their finances never made sense but they were happy to rub Hibs fans noses in a 5:1 final defeat bought at the expense of risking their club’s future ability to operate.

Whatever happened to good old-fashioned presbyterian financial probity? :-)

The Hearts proceed on a business model this year of £7m expenses with predicted turnover of £5m ….financial madness

@bellacaledonia As a Hearts fan, the only consolation I can take is that it pushes McGlynn closer to the sack. He’s dreadful beyond words.

  8. There’s an interesting guest article on the Mon The Hoops site( 2nd article down on NewsNow:Celtic) written by a Sevcoist, called Adam, outlining his argument as to why they are the same club.

Anybody want to have a go at deconstructing it?

  9. TMWTL

Sounds like the Hearts fans are having difficulty seeing financial reality too and prefer to blame the qualities of the coach that was brought in to manage them on the cheap for the downturn caused by the reduction in dubious finances.

    Pleased by your persistence.

I agree Kenny Shiels has an ‘A Game’ and they pass the ball in midfield, but it’s the same Kenny Shiels that lost 0-5 on SPL title day?

The five in midfield are all midfielders and Cillian Sheridan or a.n. other is a lone gunman (and even he comes back at corners)

If you said to me they know how to beat Celtic (sometimes) with a particular game that’s not all out attack, then I’d agree and be just as intrigued by Kenny Shiels as NFL should be.

    Do you think he is?

  11. TMWTL

Seems Hearts fans are as deluded as Sevco ones

Sixteen roads to Golgotha, the internet is full of places you can anonymously leave abuse about other people, Celtic Quick News is not one. We stay remarkably clear of this poison. Aggressive confrontation towards other CQN’ers is pointless and against site rules and has never been tolerated.

    Yellow card.

    That’s fair enough.

It was wrong of me to use a minor swear word in response to him.

I still maintain that he deliberately set out to provoke a reaction,so he got what he wished for on that score.

As I’ve said before i don’t think he’s the sharpest when it comes to tactics + team selection

His persistence with Paterson as a CF is baffling. The boy might be other things but he is no CF. Sutton on the Hearts bench would have made a far better option

tbh the more misery that is inflicted on them the better :)

  14. Richard Wilson article in The Herald begins :-

“ALLY McCoist reaches back in time when asked about interactions between managers, players and match officials. “The days of Bobby Tait telling me I was having an effing nightmare seem long gone,” he says. “I was, to be fair, but I was still having a better game than him.”

Wonder why Mr. Tait might have been concerned by Sally’s poor form?

  17. A story before the Hearts game during the week was, high earning players with big win bonuses,Sutton,Taouil among others, were being kept on the bench to save money,it’s possible.

  18. SFTB

I had a wee look at that article

A clever use of convenient analogies …re Fiorentina..the word ” effectively ” is significant

As for Leeds ..we know that a CVA was agreed their

RFC is being liquidated …that sets them apart from Leeds ,as for Fiorentina ..more info would be required as to exactly what happened

Anyway, all those associated with sevco during the attempted CVA consistently stated that if the CVA wasn’t accepted then RFC would die ….

  19. bsr

The variability in form between Killie managing a couple of decent wins against us whilst also losing 5:0 on SPL title day is quite in keeping with my thesis.

Even if Mourinho or Swalex managed Killie, they’d lose 5:0 on occasion to Celtic such is the disparity of resources but the fact that his team has also won more than once against us recently should intrigue Neil Lennon. Neil needs to have a game plan that works against a ball playing counter attacking team. The main successful tactic remains to score more than them :-)

Seriously maybe tictalker would want to run an article on this before our next away fixture.

    TMWTL

The boy Paterson looked good in his first few games there but, like most youngsters has faded through over use. John Sutton is, though, maybe a bit over-rated because of his family connections. Paulo Sergio had him reduced to a sub’s role last year because he saw limited ability. He is another SPL journeyman in the Clarkson, Killen, Mackie, Nish, Daly line. They can have a good season for a middling club but will never make the jump up.

I have to give the boy credit for effective use of rhetoric.

You are right that the use of “effectively” and “seems like” are dead give aways.

I’d also add the view that Italian authorities were wrong and corrupt in their handling of Fiorentina’s return from being Fiorentina Viola. Until we are ready to grasp the nettle that football clubs should live within their means, then we will continue to excuse the Fiorentinas and Leeds and Rangers (and many others yet to taste liquidation such as Hearts and many Spanish teams) then many clubs will get deeper into debt trying to respond to unreasonable fans with short term views.
