The lesson from Arbroath

760

So what did we learn yesterday?  Primarily we learned that you can’t replace 8 players from a team which won 0-4 at Tynecastle while leaving the core element of the team in place.  It is justifiable to be critical of the performances of experienced key players who didn’t perform, but Wanyama, Brown, Matthews, Miku didn’t become bad players overnight, nor did Tony Watt, what happened is the essence of our team – the system – was missing.

The effort was there but the focus which makes this Celtic team wasn’t.  In many ways this was the perfect setup for a Champions League game against a team too many people are telling me we’ll turn over.  Our Christmas Cup Final on Wednesday will require every element that existed against Barcelona last month.

The knives are out for Spartak’s foreign players, who are taking the blame for the clubs disintegration since losing at home to Celtic, both in the press and online fan polls.  We may see a more Russian looking Spartak on Wednesday.  Which will be no bad thing.

  1. The story I heard was that Celtic offered him £2k a week yet were blown out the water by Wigan (£10k), Celtic didn’t think he would be an automatic starter in our midfield, don’t think any of us would disagree with that looking back. So hardly something to beat the club with.

Plus he’s hardly turned into a world beater.

  2. On the subject of james mcarthy

We signed big vic for under £1m…. And that was seen as a bit of a gamble as he wasnt expected to get in the team first season.

I personally think young james was better off going south … Remember the abuse the boy got at most grounds in scotland.

Maybe when his contracts up and he is older he might be up for the hoops and all that goes with it

Pretty accurate summation of how I heard it re: JMc.

However PL was faced with an additional problem in the latter stages (when the anti was ramped up to the max) – he was faced with a trigger scenario in the dressing room re: weekly wages – 5/6 others’ agents would have been knocking the door!

    The huddle,

‘He cant blame Celtic for him not wearing the hoops’

His other option was to see out his contract which I think still had 9 months to run, and go to us. Now I dont know how much he was on at Accies but its safe to say that he’d have been giving up a couple of hundred grand by doing so. He was wanted in the EPL which is no ordinary offer so he took it when we backed off. I think he can blame Celtic for not snapping him up at the price quoted which by the way was the same fee we’ve paid many times for duds.

I still wonder if he would make a difference in our team? Really don’t know myself, but would have taken a chance on him. We waste so much money on other players!!!!!

  12. Kojo,

    A very good question.

I don’t think that Neil will be clutching a viper to his breast, but, if the appointment proves successful, then it would mean that Neil’s Celtic will be successful.

Who is to say if Jim has ambitions to be a football manager.

I feel that he has the professional qualifications tobe a sports consultant in many sporting arenas.

If he shows ambition to be a football manager it would not necessarily follow that it would be at Celtic.

Finally, I don’t that any football manager would recruit anyone of inferior qualities out of fear for their job.

In short, if Mc.Guinness is a success at Celtic, then it is a win for him and a win for us.

  14. I’d have taken a chance on McCarthy as well, I like the player just don’t think we can blame the club for him not wearing the hoops.

He supports the team, and is given a £2k a week to wear the strip, not many of us could turn that down but he did. That’s fact.

  15. Right–blagged a cheap return from pal in the know. That’s me sorted. Couple of pints in the Wallace on Tuesday night. Someone on here mentionmed Vinnie’s in Raploch. I take it the game will be on there. So, see game, then head to session in the Saddle Inn. Quiz night on Thursday. Home Friday. Then a couple more weeks until my Festive Fortnight. All I need now to complete my happiness is a decent nap in the naps competition and a Celtic win. Sometimes Guinness can do stuff better than Carlsberg.

  16. Oh dear, even when someone posts the reality of the situation, some still make up the story to suit themselfs.

  19. Marrakesh Express on

I think your right…his career has blossomed at Wigan where he was thrust into the first team almost straight away and by playing at that level, he has certainly prospered.

The wages offered by PL were much more than the 2k a week quoted so its possible that PL wasnt over keen as it might upset the dressing room.

James suffered abuse at most grounds in Scotland. He got it from the suits at Ibrox which was strangely missed by the press who sat next to them. He came in for some vile treatment at Motherwell too but the worst was at Dumfries when it got so bad that Billy Reid asked the police to deal with it, which they duly did by arresting some QOS fans in the main stand. This made a small column in The Sun. James McCarthy was on the same sad hate list as Lennon and McGeady. He’s better off away from his cesspit of a country.
