The lesson from Arbroath

760

So what did we learn yesterday?  Primarily we learned that you can’t replace 8 players from a team which won 0-4 at Tynecastle while leaving the core element of the team in place.  It is justifiable to be critical of the performances of experienced key players who didn’t perform, but Wanyama, Brown, Matthews, Miku didn’t become bad players overnight, nor did Tony Watt, what happened is the essence of our team – the system – was missing.

The effort was there but the focus which makes this Celtic team wasn’t.  In many ways this was the perfect setup for a Champions League game against a team too many people are telling me we’ll turn over.  Our Christmas Cup Final on Wednesday will require every element that existed against Barcelona last month.

The knives are out for Spartak’s foreign players, who are taking the blame for the clubs disintegration since losing at home to Celtic, both in the press and online fan polls.  We may see a more Russian looking Spartak on Wednesday.  Which will be no bad thing.

GL2 – heard there was a bit of a fix going on with the raffle?! Certain sponsors doing genuine punters out of prizes….shameful stuff !!

I agree, at that time, if we could have signed him, he would have been a good acquisition to the Celtic team at that point. I think all the cash went on Marc Fortune. :(

  3. Rubbish 16 roads, Celtic offered £2k Wigan £10k you can’t blame the boy but don’t think it was Celtic issue.

I do not believe that any offer was made on Celtic’s behalf.

Tony Mowbray publicly stated that he did not believe that McCathy was worth the £1million transfer fee.

Hamilton sold to the highest bidder,James waited and waited for Celtic to make a bid,and it just never happened.

He always said that Celtic was the club that he wanted to play for,but unfortunately it was out of his hands.

Your gonna need a bigger dining table….make room for three of the worst ever..RH Davidson, JPR Gordon and Mike McCurry. These cheats are in my all time top 5 with Dallas and Syme. Golum and Thomson are getting there though.

  10. That’s not what I heard, his agent said that Celtic offered £2k a week but also said they didn’t think he would be a starter in our midfield. Wigan then offered £10k a week, his agent said they couldn’t turn that down. I can’t blame them to be honest. But I can’t also blame Celtic.

I know what you are saying, but Celtic were not willing to pay the transfer fee in the first place,so the issue of wages was irrelevant anyway.

  12. Gamblers always remember the punts that came up. They keep donating to the bookies because they suppress memories of their losing bets and cherish memories of their winning ones.

For similar reasons, we regret not signing Fletcher & McCarthy, the guys that have blossomed at lower EPL level.

We no longer castigate Peter Lawwell for not going the extra mile to sign Goodwillie or John Sutton or David Clarkson or Craig Mackail-Smith or Craig Conway or Billy Sharp or Kevin Thompson or Chris McGuire or Christophe Berra.

All of these players were moving around the same time that Fletcher & McCarthy moved and were all touted for Celtic, along with 100 other exotic foreign players, but they have not been seen to hit the same heights so we forget that we were equally enthusiastic about them.

When you are counting up how successful a tipster you are on future players, you must add your losses to the overall pile or you will have a false impression of your prowess.

sorry to go on about this but if his dad is not the horse’s mouth I dont know what is. Celtic DID make an offer of 800k which was beaten by 400k.PL had the final say and NOT BTM.

  14. The transfer fee wasn’t the problem, we rated him at £800k £1mill we offered £2k a week, Hamilton had a better offer and the player accepted that.

So PL is a success and has no failures then? Surely the only way you can improve in your job, is to understand your weaknesses and mistakes and improve on them?

McCarthy IMO was a mistake. Could have been a modern day Paul McStay

We are probably down currently on Scott’s transfer fee and wages.

It seems we do have an offer where we could have made money back but we felt he was worth more to us as a dressing room leader and popular player. The judgement of how much that is worth is hard for an outsider to make.

If Scott gets an operation. If Scott heals from that operation. And if Scott comes back to lead Celtic to regular success and/or fetches a big transfer fee, we will have to reverse our judgement.

That is an awful lot of ifs but it is also quite iffy to be judging a players value halfway through his career.

    I stand corrected.

But i am certain that if the club really wanted to sign the lad, then he would now be a Celtic player.

That wee Hamilton side played some decent football at that time with McCarthy and McArthur in their midfield.

I think that Hamilton were robbed blind on both counts to be honest.

Still also believe that Swansea stroked us when they signed Ki.

But sure, that’s just the way it goes sometimes.

I fail to see how that deduction could be made based on anything I said.

If not buying McCarthy WAS a mistake, how come not buying the others in my list, based on what was known about them at the time, were not equal mistakes.

I think we’re back to Monday morning quarterbacking here.

  24. I know it’s unpopular but I really don’t rate Brown, I can accept him as a player if he came through the rank, and cost us nothing, play for the badge etc but £4mill is scary, and the wages eyewatering.

We’ve talked about McCarthy but god I wish we’d spent £4mill on him

All EPL clubs pay a points bonus each season. Wigan’s bonus was 12k per point two seasons ago, so 40 points is about half a mill before tax. I doubt we could compete with that.

    “HIGHLY MOTIVATED PLAYERS.”

I think this is where we are struggling (in the lesser games) and this is the area that Neil is definitely trying to turn around. Neil, as far as I can see, is very progressive in his thinking, hence the J Mc appointment. We need to get as many home grown players into the first team as possible as there is no motivation needed really when the Club is in your heart and soul.

  28. Just for a bit of info about the state of Scottish football, I know one player that scored in the SPL last year for Hamilton and was offered and signed a contract that was £12K A YEAR.

Yep a basic wage of £12k a year, and he signed it. Nothing wrong with that but goes to show how low the wages are on offer in Scotland.
