The lesson from Arbroath

760

So what did we learn yesterday?  Primarily we learned that you can’t replace 8 players from a team which won 0-4 at Tynecastle while leaving the core element of the team in place.  It is justifiable to be critical of the performances of experienced key players who didn’t perform, but Wanyama, Brown, Matthews, Miku didn’t become bad players overnight, nor did Tony Watt, what happened is the essence of our team – the system – was missing.

The effort was there but the focus which makes this Celtic team wasn’t.  In many ways this was the perfect setup for a Champions League game against a team too many people are telling me we’ll turn over.  Our Christmas Cup Final on Wednesday will require every element that existed against Barcelona last month.

The knives are out for Spartak’s foreign players, who are taking the blame for the clubs disintegration since losing at home to Celtic, both in the press and online fan polls.  We may see a more Russian looking Spartak on Wednesday.  Which will be no bad thing.

I went to the doctor on tuesday with a serious problem. My doctor, mrs arbuthnott said to me “Mr ACGR you’ve got a big big problem”.

“Whats wrong with me I asked”. She said “your going to have to stop w*^king”.

    “Why”, I asked?

“Because I’m trying to examine you” she replied.

    Big time.

At only 16 years of age,he had already played over 50 games for Hamilton’s first team.

Same as Ki – that bhoy was international, capped almost 50 times by his country by the time he was 21.

That Liverpool mob paid what £15million for that Allen thing? Yet it is obvious that K

Hindsight’s a great thing but sometimes you just know your letting a player slip, and McCarthy is one of them. In the case of Fletcher I wasnt 100% convinced but would still have took the gamble. It was more of a gamble by wgs and pl to not buy him and go for willo flood instead. This ‘gamble’ cost us a fortune and gave the huns a stay of execution.

  4. petec,

I agree with Kojo’s view that great coaches can be ones who never played the game at a significant level.

Conversely, great players seldom make great managers, as they were great players by instinct.

I don’t think Jmc.G knows what his future career path will be.

If he can bring the qualities that he brought to Donegal to Celtic, then I expect to see a progression of developing talent reaching first team level.

That is his brief. No more promising boys dropping out through attitude, committment or focus.

There will be some who won’t measure up, but there will be plenty who will rise to the challenge.

Off to the crib, g’night all.

  5. Love Ki, watched Swansea out pass Arsenal yesterday and Ki was the worst player on the pitch.

You know how we watched Ki dally on the ball up here and thought down south he would thrive, nope he still looks half asleep.

  6. Marrakesh Express,

I imagine our offer would have made him a wealthy Bhoy?

G’night all, thanks for replies…cannae wait for Wednesday.

What I admit is that not buying James McCarthy was a mistake.

I know that based on what I know now rather than what I knew then.

I wanted James to sign and posted so, because he went to the same school I did and played in the same school team as my sister’s boy. I did not, and still do not, know if he can be a latter day Paul McStay but I see he has become a better player than most of us thought at the time.

There was no great outcry from the support when we failed to land James. Most of us thought Wigan had paid over the odds and we moved on to touting other targets so that, in our blunderbuss way, we’d be bound to have identified somebody that we could castigate PL for missing.

I’ve said it too many times. I care not whether PL stays or goes. I’d like less money to go out of our club on his wages and bonuses but, apart from being strong enough to face down our fans demands for more profligate spending, I have little admiration for him. I think barcabhoy is right in saying that there are many Celtic business people who could have done his job.

That said, I also think PL is a lot more impressive than Mr. Bankier.

  10. PS.

    Petec,

By definition, all Donegal’s players were local boys.

Therefore being homegrown is not a guarantee of motivation or the other qualities required to be a top class sportsman.

As Mc.G said,”it”s about being the best that they can be”

    That’s the trick.

You and I might have been blinded by the school he went to.

I wish James McCarthy all the best but, before we over-rate him, let’s remember he has only just broken into the ROI team this season ( I know he had 2 caps last year but he was very much a fringe player then) and has yet to score or seriously impress at International level.

Like you, I think he has the qualities to do that but he has not done it yet. Wanyama is a better player than James and Ki is just as good at present.

I fear it is hard for anyone to give up the rich wages on offer from EPL or even Russia, even though I have no dounbt that both James and Aiden have a strong affection for the Celts.

you have become very vocal over the last few days

with your support of old firm and thats your angle.

Now you are telling us Scott Brown has not earned hos way.

    Enough is enough

he was hired for his energy and attitude,

Heartly paid his debt in Moscow with one goal

Scott Brown has paid his debt with more than one goal

but the penny dropped and he is here.

No one on here has given Scott Brown a harder time than me, no one.
