The Mahatma Gandhi question

902

It was curious that Peter Lawwell was quizzed on potentially having a conflict of interest in deciding if a recent multiple-convict would be regarded by the SFA as Fit and Proper to direct a football club.  The club in question are not even in our league; conflict exists only in the heads of those who persist in believing in a ‘Firm which expired on the liquidation of one party.

I’ve avoided the appropriateness of a recent convict directing a football club as the deciding matters appear overwhelmingly obvious.  There are no written rules on being Fit and Proper, largely due to the Mahatma Gandhi question posed by Neil Doncaster last year.  Gandhi was a convict, but one of impeccable character.  The contemporaneous character references are all important.  The SFA will also be chastened by recent experiences.

My guess is that in the unlikely event the Nomads acquiesce, Peter Lawwell’s views will be immaterial.  “Nobody likes us, we don’t care” has nothing to do with it, just find someone Fit and Proper!

Delighted that Aberdeen’s quest for silverware survived Fir Park last night.  This club have underachieved for around 20 years now but Derek McInnes stands a reasonable chance of delivering second place in the league, as well as the League Cup.

Not so delighted at Hibs capitulation.  Despite playing like Brazil in the 1970 World Cup for the first 15 minutes of their home tie against Hearts last night they were soon out-muscled, with more than a few players looking miles out of their depth.  There is no compensation for Scottish football in Hearts progressing to the semi-finals.  They are mid-crisis and will remain so, irrespective of how they perform in cup competitions, but the absence of Hibernian from the genuine challengers is a regret.

Morton went down to a late St Johnstone goal.  They have now lost five and drawn one of their six games since winning at Celtic Park, their only victory since August…..

With this in mind, I’ll refrain from referring to the potential advantage of having a Cup Final at ‘home’ until we have earned the right to be there.

Dreadful news of Fernando Ricksen.  I hope he finds strength from those close to him in the years ahead.

The new CQN Annual is looking great, really delighted with it. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the project. You can pre-order below:

An organisation which arose from the ashes of a previous incarnation which was put into administration and then liquidation for failure to pay , among other things, tax and which continues to be involved in a long running dispute as to whether a tax avoidance scheme was legal wishes to appoint as its Chairman a known, admitted and convicted tax evader?

Happy Anniversary to any interlopers who pop in now and again…

Clearly Michael Gannon has been drinking to much of the witches brew to publish nonsense like this….

He complains that the title race is over in League One. Correct, it is. When, however, was the 3rd tier of Scottish Football a challenge of his to report on?

    Read and weep….

NO one likes admitting they are lost. We’ve all took a punt at a crossroads and ploughed on, only to have that growing gnawing feeling we’re going further in the wrong direction.

When you start seeing cows rather than buildings it finally dawns on you there’s nothing else for it, you’ll need to go back.

Turning round is sore for the ego – but a far better option than charging on into the wilderness.

Let’s face it, this new-but-really-the-same Scottish football set-up is heading in the wrong direction.

    We need to go back.

I know the idea of going back to reconstruction talks is about as appetising as a roll ‘n’ cowpat but whether we like it or not we have to take another bite.

    It’s just isn’t working.

The Premiership is all over before Halloween. Talk about scary. We might as well hold the

    end-of-season dance this weekend.

The title race is over. Not that it ever really started. Same in League One. Relegation is pretty much a done deal in the top division as well. Even Hearts fans know they have more important battles to win.

All that’s left is heavily-weighted relegation play-offs and the scrap to see what teams get to start pre-season the earliest to prepare for a European tie in deepest darkest Belarus.

Not great is it? And we can’t say it hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Christmas decorations will be getting dug out soon and we still don’t have a title sponsor.

Big companies won’t touch our game with a bargepole. They’re not interested and it won’t be long before everyone else feels the same.

The one positive from those endless meetings in the last 18 months is we have one body in charge. It’s as easy to change the format of our leagues now as it is to change the curtains at Hampden, so let’s just do it.

Fans have constantly been told we can’t afford a bigger top flight but wait and see, it won’t be long before we’re told we can’t afford not to have one.

It doesn’t take the gift of second sight to see what’s around the corner. Scottish football is heading back down the rabbit hole. Next season we are likely to have a First Division – or Championship in new money – that includes Rangers and Hearts.

Dunfermline could be in there too as well as St Mirren or Kilmarnock.

Chuck in Falkirk, Hamilton, Dundee and others and it’s going to look like a mirror image of the division above.

There will be weekends when attendances in the second tier outnumber the first, which would be bonkers.

Scottish football will never have a better chance to have a bash at a bigger top flight again.

So let’s just go for it. Ram the top two divisions together and do the same with the bottom two. Have a top 20 and bottom 22.

Can’t hurt to have a go.

I’d bet there would be a queue of sponsors who put down the bargepoles and get all touchy-feely.

The Old Firm would be back. We’d have derbies in Edinburgh, Dundee, Fife and the Highlands. A 38-game campaign and freedom to play without constant fear of the drop, no split and a proper spread of money.

    Tempting, isn’t it?

    Ah, but… of course there’s a but.

The undoubted howls of protest. It’s a leg-up for Rangers and a bailout for Hearts, they’ll say.

Well, they’ll need to grow up. Rangers have had two years on the naughty step. It’s time to let them back in.

If we need to wallop Hearts further to appease the rest then we can take more points off them next year too if need be.

But what would be the point? There’s been enough self-harm in Scotland. There’s time to mend wounds and patch up the product. We’re all in this together.

We need to turn round before it’s too late to find our way back.

Being an Edinburgh resident, I’d be delighted if the CL qualifiers were played at Murrayfield. I’ve only ever been there for concerts but the atmosphere for a Celtic game would be great if we could get close to a full house. The Board will need to get the pricing right to ensure a big turnout from fans not used to traveling for home games.

Awful news about Fernando Ricksen, thoughts with him and his family.

When it comes to looking at football performance to turnover. Celtics record is worse than woeful. Thr standard of football within Scottish football tends to take the blame. An excuse the huns used but not Jock or Sean or José. We still dont get bang for buck.

PL profile strikes me as being enhanced by those who are impressed by spin and made up on the hoof policy. Beyond gullible.

It took him a long time to appoint Neil and I still believe he does not rate him as a manager. Just spin to keep the dyed in the wool gullibles on side.

When the board vote against the resolution it will be confirmation that they are still part of the Old Firm furniture and very much remain there.

The support will split into two camps. The gullibles including those that want the Old Firm to continue and those that will not be prepared to wait for the supposed invite to a bigger league (i.e The super gullibles)

How long are we prepared to wait with this hands off narrative without an invite to a bigger league?

We have heard this garbage for 35 years and its still unqaulified garbage. Mind you if you prefer your sport wrapped up in a carefully choreographed package rather than a true and fair sport then you will only have to wait 18 months.

I am glad that our Old Firm status will officially be confirmed at the AGM. Anyone trying to ascertain that this is not the case will only be doing so through emotional necessity due to a lifetime of conditioning.

Same old Celtic doing as they are told. As long,as we are making profits and winning the SPL. No CL ambitions and joined at the hip with Rangers.

Its looking like I will start contributing again once we get the invite to another league unless we are only waiting for the return of Rangers to the top league before getting the invite. That is what the ECA want and they get what they want.

I have yet to be proven wrong about my Old Firm assertions on CQN. 9 years and counting

    The Lying King!

The ‘glib and shameless liar’ bit we all know about. The whole of paragraph [20] of Southwood J’s judgement is worth a gander:

Mr. Dave King is a tall, slim man in his 50s. He appeared to be very confident and not in the slightest uncomfortable about giving evidence and being cross-examined. He is intelligent and articulate and appears to be well-versed in the intricacies of the financial world and the purchasing and selling of shares on the JSE. Notwithstanding these advantages he made a very poor impression as a witness. He is extremely arrogant and obviously thinks that whatever he says is so. It was demonstrated that he deliberately misrepresented the facts of the case to his legal representatives, to SARS in correspondence and at the section 74C enquiry and to the representatives and solicitors of the Y Trust. As his evidence progressed it became clear that he has no respect for the truth and does not hesitate to lie or at least misrepresent the facts if he thinks it will be to his advantage. There can be little doubt that on most occasions Mr. [Dave King] lied as he knew the correct facts and obviously decided to misrepresent these facts. In cross-examination Mr. [Dave King] often avoided giving a proper answer to the questions. Sometimes he simply ignored the point of the question and gave a long rambling answer. On other occasions he resorted to bluster or to attacking the integrity of the cross-examiner, accusing him of misrepresenting the facts to the court. He also attacked the integrity of the Commissioner’s attorney, accusing him of presenting facts to the court knowing them to be untrue. It is significant that the appellant’s counsel have not attempted to make anything of these allegations. They clearly consider that there is no merit in these allegations. We saw Mr. [Dave King] testify in chief and in cross-examination for four days and are unanimous in finding that he is a mendacious witness whose evidence should not be accepted on any issue unless it is supported by documents or other objective evidence. It was remarkable that Mr. [Dave King] showed no sign of embarrassment or any emotion when he conceded that he had lied to the Commissioner in a number of his income tax returns. In our assessment he is a glib and shameless liar.”

personally I have never wanted Celtic to leave the Scottish set up. Not for any European league, nor for England. Even if invited I’d rather not move.

What I would rather see is a level playing field in our own league. A long shot perhaps, but, initiatives like the one your good self has undertaken is a positive move in my opinion.

To me, if we bailed, the cheats have won and the path is cleared for an eternity of further corruption and cheating.

Fergus didn’t sit back and accept their nonsense, and I think regardless of how laborious a task, I think Celtic need to start to question every questionable act and decision. I’ll say again, your own campaign should not be undervalued in it’s importance.

At some point in the future, surely an honourable set of gentleman (or ladies) will sit in office and govern fairly? I can already hear the cries of derision at that statement, but I feel we have to believe that, and continue to fight towards it.

Celtic should be playing in a European league, yes. The Champions League every season as champions of our country. To move, would I feel, deprive generations of Celtic supporters of the future the opportunity to witness the most wonderful European nights that so many of us have to be privileged to watch in the past.

Unfortunately, the rabid sectarianism evident across the way will never subside. There is a new generation of them being nurtured daily across Scotland. For me though, that is all the more reason to stand our ground and beat them at every turn to every prize.

Celtic FC, should stop looking to get out of Scotland and spend more time ensuring that we receive equality in the current set up.
