The Motor Neurone fight 6 years after Jinky

824

Last month we heard from one of our community, RalphWaldoEllison (John), whose adult son, Tony Conway, has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the same strain of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) that claimed Jimmy Johnstone almost six years ago.

Tony, John and their families now live in the United States, but they, along with Tony’s brother Martin, are travelling to Scotland this weekend to watch Celtic play Dundee United.  They will be here for a total of around 48 hours but I will get a chance to meet them and they are going to the game with Jinky’s son, James Johnstone.

I spoke to James last month and he relayed Jinky’s strong views on research into MND.  The fight against this disease will be won one day but there is a great deal of research and political effort required before then.  Tony has committed himself to this end.

This morning James Johnstone told me: “My Dad was my hero and I took great pride in the way he fought this horrible disease, it’s great to see the same attitude in Tony.  I know how much my Dad loved the Celtic fans and his answer to this would be to help get a cure for MND.  Hail, hail.”

I encourage you to visit Tony’s blog dontshrink.com, learn about the condition and leave him a message of support.  The Celtic Movement began by putting food in front of hungry children 124 years ago and it remains one of the most able forces for good in the land. We can pick up this challenge.

Terrific article ( as always ) I have exchanged many a private note with Keevins, where his attitude is that his “attacks” on Celtic are for the greater good, however he pursues that avenue with too much enthusiasm for my liking.

He has never really got over the Artur George embarassment.

Ref the Jeff Winter Blog,it is now getting, what for him, will be an unreasonable amount of attention,Gabrielle Marcotti has asked him if it were him or was he hacked,he has responded saying his Web Manager will review!!

Meanwhile several people have contacted the various radio stations who occasionally feature him and advised them of this blatant hatred and that outbursts of this sort are not acceptable in civilised society.

Keep up the good work,I read it all,as I am as prolific a watcher as you are a writer.

  4. Hamiltontim – I have no idea – if Hooper or Stokes get injured then I think we will struggle.

We have virtually no debt – have had extra European games and money this year – we can afford to strengthen – so why take any risk? We have taken this risk for 3 years and the huns (please dont arrest me officer) have won the league each time. Should we not learn from our mistakes???

Celtic40me – the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Do you think we will buy anyone this window? Naw me neither – after all its nothing to do with winning eh!!!

  5. St Stivs, jtsTICks calls you ‘shakiralova’! :o) Happy New Year my friend. James Forrest some really great posts from you tonight. I too heard Keevins tonight and you have articulated my thoughts much better than I ever could! I will look forward to you wiping the floor with that deplorable individual Winter! Hail hail, sTICks

The BBC Flintoff programme was very good.I have never spoken to anyone who has opened up to me and tell me they suffer from depression. When guys like Flintoff and Neil, bring it in to the open, hopefully the perceived taboo can disappear for a lot of folk, and know they are not on their own.I have read some bhoys on here suffer from it,hope this post doesn’t sound too simplistic.

  7. If jeff winters site has been hacked I take it he’ll be making a public statement on his site about how wrong what was said was. And a little strange that of all the people to hack it, it wasn’t a Celtic supporter it was a malicious rangers fan who posted anti catholic rubbish to get a fellow ger in trouble

Another one I’ll be thinking about went their time comes.

  8. Neganon

No, the proof of the pudding is in you pointing out exactly where the board have said what you are accusing them of saying. New year, same old m.o.

We strengthened with Bellamy and lost a league under MON.

We strengthened with Keane, Kamara & Braafheid and lost a league under Tony M.

(unless you think loans don’t count.)

We have already sourced Lustig and I suspect he will not be our last signing.

Whether our signings will be good enough to win a league is in the lap of the gods. I still think that signing good players is not enough. Those good players need to play well for 5 further months.

When the Jan. window closes there will be no proclamation from me as to whether we have won the league or not,

A league is always hard won. That is the lesson we have still to learn.

This window is slightly different… They are mortally wounded. It occurs to me that there is a brinksmanship game being played. Worst case scenario… They dont sell and at last minute add a striker while we do nowt…

I think we should add just to be safe but we are talking back up not game changer this time.

I’d take Skacel or John Sutton… Cheap proven back up standard that we may not even use… Give them 6 month contracts with performance related extension clauses.

Skacel may not be an out and out striker but he could do the job at Celtic…

Alternatively think big and start buying with next season’s Euro games in mind… But I don’t see that.

  11. Just checked out Jeff Winters wiki page to find out who the hell he is. Turns out he is a former referee and bigot.

    Dont you just love wiki.

  12. celtic40me

Jeff Winters site has not been hacked . He has freely published paedophilia jibes against our club on his website previously; this is far from his first offence. This slimeball has still been approached by Radio5live, Talksport, and the Scottish media to comment on football matters. Everyone of them is culpable of deliberate ignorance.

  13. celtic40me

The idea that Jeff Winter’s site was hacked is hilarious if you have ever had the misfortune to visit it. He is a bigot and has been posting bigoted diatribes on that site for at least three years now. His views on Celtic, the Catholic Church, and child abuse are utterly repugnant.

Unfortunately, sometimes this stuff needs to be brought into the light when it would seem better to leave it under the rock where it dwells. The man is a sick SOB, and although it seems pointless giving him air time on CQN, ask yourself, why has he been interviewed regularly by BBC Scotland re. refereeing controversies? He is a bigot and a racist, like many huns, and his views have been consistent down the years.

It’s coming across that you take old Hugh even more seriously than he takes himself.

Life is too short too be angry mate, hope it is all out of your system.

I listen to these things now with an ironic wee twist on my lips. In my head, it’s kind of the expression I once witnessed Tomy Benn adopt when listening to Ian Paisley. Nothing they say should be taken seriously, though I do appreciate your anther and frustration at the platform they regularly abuse.

I have gone through it and am out the other end. I now don’t even comment to e Celtic fans who roll iinto my work with the record and the sun under their arms. Because there is no point.

Believe it or not jeff winters is a well-respected ex-referee down here, I don’t think 5live or talksport can be blamed for still using him, he’s not really broken cover until now

I’m aware of his allegiances and beliefs but it’s stretching it a bit to expect 5live and talksport to know as well. Actually he’d probably fit in quite well at talksport anyway

  16. As another poster pointed out the RFC website has had an ‘under construction’ page up for a while now.

An unpaid bill is one possibility…

  17. Celtic40me – was that a bizzare threat of some kind – I’m scared to go to bed now! Track record please?

Cults – how long have we being saying that the huns have imploded – we have been their life support for far too long – hosepipe should be used but we just dont seem to want to

  19. Marrakesh Express on

One good thing I can take from the big story so far is that it has well and truly exposed the laptop loyal for what they are. Unless there is an unlikely overhaul of the media process in this country, we know where we will stand from now on, ifVer we didnt know already.

We have seen weak, lazy, pathetic, intelligence insulting journalism from the media pack. We know who the culprits are and they have shown themselves up to be worse than I ever thought. Very few have had the guts and integrity to tackle this Scottish Football Watergate as they should have. Graham Spiers being one and isnt it ironic that he’s a self confessed Rangers fan. What does that tell you about the rest?

As for the star man Keevins, I understand what you say Burnley 78. However, when Terry tears him apart for his constant anti Celtic and pro Rangers stance, his denial of the severity of the RTC situation, his continual putting down of our club at every turn, his rubbishing of this and ALL other blogs while obviously poaching news from them to write his columns? And he is the exact opposite of Spiers, a born and bred tim from Partick?

He is obviously intelligent but how bad does it get when one journalist in this poisoned wee country we should be relying on to call it as it is, refuses and opts for the succulent lamb option. He’s not smart in that aspect. Keevins decides to wind up Celtic fans to get the numbers up on his show. Its that obvious. Then he gets Terry and Sean on to have a go at him and we all get carried away including me. It really is dumb down radio.

I listen to English phone ins sometimes and its far more professional, with few agendas and if there are any, they are out in the open. Certainly no bias towards one club.

I wonder if the likes of King, Guidi, Traynor, Keevins and Jackson ever consider their role in the great cover up and if it was all worth it. Apart from Spiers and one or two others, they’ve all lost it.

Aye, that’s a trump argument right enough. There is no doubt that we have got it wrong for 3 years now.

We only disagree on how we got it wrong. I am pointing out those occasions under MON & TM where we spent and failed. My view is it is about playing good players (whether bought or developed) rather than buying big and flashing cash and fetishising being in debt.

rangers would be forced to do what they should have done in 2007 – downsize – and their integrity would be restored by paying their taxes and losing their titles since 2000, if they were to surrender them voluntarily in recognition of their wrongdoing, such recognition being an absolute condition of any solution, that would be a welcome sign of contrition apart from being full of irony.

We have no inkling of what HMRC will do so I would not rule this suggestion out.

*that’s the way I see it as well, however apart from giving us the 5 titles they falsely won they should also give us 1 Scottish Cup and 1 each to Dundee, QOTS and Falkirk as well as 2 League Cups to us and 1 each to Ayr U, ‘well, Arabs and St Mirren.

If it has been Hacked it must have happened 3 year ago and he did not notice until now.
