The Motor Neurone fight 6 years after Jinky

824

Last month we heard from one of our community, RalphWaldoEllison (John), whose adult son, Tony Conway, has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the same strain of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) that claimed Jimmy Johnstone almost six years ago.

Tony, John and their families now live in the United States, but they, along with Tony’s brother Martin, are travelling to Scotland this weekend to watch Celtic play Dundee United.  They will be here for a total of around 48 hours but I will get a chance to meet them and they are going to the game with Jinky’s son, James Johnstone.

I spoke to James last month and he relayed Jinky’s strong views on research into MND.  The fight against this disease will be won one day but there is a great deal of research and political effort required before then.  Tony has committed himself to this end.

This morning James Johnstone told me: “My Dad was my hero and I took great pride in the way he fought this horrible disease, it’s great to see the same attitude in Tony.  I know how much my Dad loved the Celtic fans and his answer to this would be to help get a cure for MND.  Hail, hail.”

I encourage you to visit Tony’s blog dontshrink.com, learn about the condition and leave him a message of support.  The Celtic Movement began by putting food in front of hungry children 124 years ago and it remains one of the most able forces for good in the land. We can pick up this challenge.

Robbie Keane spotted on the Gallowgate with Ian Harte, Craig Bellamy and an unknown older gentleman that looked like an older version of a young Mark de Gruysse. Could be a quadruple signing on the way.

‘That is a road that Neil Lennon seems to be going down. Yes, he’s had more financial freedom to spend than McCoist has had, or is ever likely to have, but Lennon has predominantly gone for younger players in the transfer market…’

Well, let’s just have a look at that for a moment…

    Rangers 2011/12 Spend: £4m

    Celtic 2011/12 Spend: £3m

    Rangers 2011/12 Sales: £1.7m

    Celtic 2011/12 Sales: £2.3m

    Rangers 2011/12 Net Spend: £2.3m

Celtic 2011/12 Net Spend: 700k (or less than Ortiz and McKay)

Anyone else thinking back to the days when Dick Advocaat used to trawl the transfer market with one hand tied behind his back whilst Dr Jo got a free reign to spend megabucks?

Naw, me neither. I bet Tom English does though.

googybhoy- I stopped voting a long time ago,but every ballot paper i get from now on will be used as a protest vote against the SNP.

I’m not much of a political animal and would listen to both sides of the argument. However in recent history i have voted SNP. I have done this because i look at other small nations that run their own affairs and just think, why cant we? I understand the negativity towards Salmond and feel let down by him and his party with regards to the legislation but, i still hold the notion that i would like us to be independant. Salmond in my eyes is a conduit, i dont particularly like the guy or his wee poodle but at this stage they are a means to and end.

Romantic notion i know, but i think apathy will be the downfall when the referendum comes.

Ally McCoist interested in Sue Barker.

She’s a good leader, they have played on the same stage previously and she has oodles of experience.

  13. What did the SNP ever do for us…

had to go to a chemist over New Year. Because of the holiday I missed the local shop so had to go over the border to Asda in Carlisle to get the scrip filled.

    £7.60!

So free prescriptions are definitely a good thing.

On the other hand I’m in complete agreement with ole HRH Prince Philip over the wind farms, which Alex Salmond seems to love so much. Round here they’re going up like weeds, it’s bonkers.

Coneybhoy was in good company there. At the weekend the Guardian published an extract from the self-same book, Gil Scott Heron’s memoire, noting that it had been “written before he died”. As a letter to esteemed journal from Ian Burdon in Edinburgh yesterday pointed out; “That’s does tend to be the way of things”. Ouch!

  22. Saw the headlines this morning about the young lad from Airdrie who would rather go down south than sign for his boyhood heroes (Celtic).

I was reminded of the story Tommy Burns told when he was at Celtic park for signing talks. Tommy had been scouted by a number of clubs down south and was asked to go for various trials. Celtic decided to make their move and through a teacher of his they asked him and his father to the ground for signing talks. Cue the usual talks and Tommy being strong minded said that he didn’t think he would be good enough and what chance did he have of making the first team and getting a game. I think he was 14 or 15 at the time. Once the talks had kind of stalled him and his father were asked to go away and think about it. Before leaving the ground the youth coach or whoever had been doing the talks with the young TB and father asked if he had seen the trophy room yet. At this time Celtic Park was much less accessable to the public as it is now. Once they had entered and saw the array of silverware and other pieces of memorabilia a young Tommy was asked by his father ‘Do you know what you are doing here Thomas? This is Celtic you are possibly knocking back’

The talks recommenced almost immediately and Tommy put pen to paper for a club he simply couldn’t refuse to sign for. It was in his blood. It was his destiny. It was his team and the only thing that possibly put doubt in his mind was that he probably wasn’t sure if he could do the jersey justice. He certainly did and I would have 11 Tommy Burns in my team every day of the week.

It leads me to think about this young lad Donnelly. If he was brought to Celtic Park and shown the facilities and trophies. If he met the manager and heard his passion and vision. If he met the array of stars that currently ply their trade at Celtic Park and saw their focus and drive to win. If he was taken to the training ground and shown the top class facilities there. If he is as big a Celtic supporter as he claims. I would be surprised if he could knock back the Celtic.

In the history of Celtic 1967 film. There is a statement from Joe McBride that makes my hair stand on end. Joe had unfortunately got a serious injury and would miss the second half of the season. Even though Joe had scored more in half a season than anyone in the Scottish League would amass is a whole season he himself probably didn’t imagine what the all conquering Hoops would achieve that season. His quote was something like this.

‘Even though I won’t be with the Bhoys I hope they sweep the boards this season. I’ve been a Celtic supporter all my life and when the chance came to sign I jumped at it. When you pull the Celtic jersey on there is a feeling that can’t be described’

As a supporter of Celtic those two stories of players who have been lucky enough to pull that jersey on relate more to me than anyone else. I feel like Joe McBride pulling the Hoops on to watch a match!

I don’t believe that any Celtic supporter can refuse the chance to play for Celtic.

The young lad from Airdrie is either badly guided by some agent hoping to reap the benefits of a move to England or the story is mischief making by our friends in the press. If he or anyone else is a Celtic supporter and don’t feel like Tommy or Joe McBride do we want them to come and play in our beloved Hoops?

I’m sure most people have heard the stories above but they popped into my head when thinking about how any Celtic supporter could refuse a move to Celtic. Apologies if the quotes aren’t quite correct. I thought they were apt this morning.

I can see your position. I held a similar view at the last referendum. I felt that an independent Scotland was the only way to guarantee a left wing government in Scotland for years to come. I would like to think that would still be the case but I think the SNP will want to cling to power.

After Independence surely their whole raison d’etre has been achieved and they will disband?

    Doubt that.
