The Motor Neurone fight 6 years after Jinky

824

Last month we heard from one of our community, RalphWaldoEllison (John), whose adult son, Tony Conway, has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the same strain of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) that claimed Jimmy Johnstone almost six years ago.

Tony, John and their families now live in the United States, but they, along with Tony’s brother Martin, are travelling to Scotland this weekend to watch Celtic play Dundee United.  They will be here for a total of around 48 hours but I will get a chance to meet them and they are going to the game with Jinky’s son, James Johnstone.

I spoke to James last month and he relayed Jinky’s strong views on research into MND.  The fight against this disease will be won one day but there is a great deal of research and political effort required before then.  Tony has committed himself to this end.

This morning James Johnstone told me: “My Dad was my hero and I took great pride in the way he fought this horrible disease, it’s great to see the same attitude in Tony.  I know how much my Dad loved the Celtic fans and his answer to this would be to help get a cure for MND.  Hail, hail.”

I encourage you to visit Tony’s blog dontshrink.com, learn about the condition and leave him a message of support.  The Celtic Movement began by putting food in front of hungry children 124 years ago and it remains one of the most able forces for good in the land. We can pick up this challenge.

Interesting post about Mochan in Buncrana – my great grandmother (Paisley born) lived in Buncrana for a while around the 20s/30s I think. My mum (also Paisley born) would often go there on holiday as a wee girl and stay with “family” within which her gran had been made to feel so welcome and always describes it with fondness – playing cards with bearded pipe smoking Buncrana men is one of her earliest memories!

Also, great effort on the fundraising for Vanessa Riddle – contributed what I could.

Good Morning to the Celtic Family from a bright and sunny Central Scotland.I have been trying to work out in my mind the Celtic transfer strategy for this January transfer window. While we are linked in the media with strikers in the 2.5 million to 5 million bracket it would appear the reality of the search is some what different. We appear to be trawling the bargain basement looking for out of contract freebies or players available for around the 500,00 mark. That would explain why we are in no rush to deals early in the window but happy to wait until nearer the end because by then unsigned players without a club will be easier to deal with. Now in itself this may not be a bad approach and is prudent we havnt done badly recently with out of contract players Ledley and Matthews spring to mind I would have liked to see money spent on a quality striker as this would bring real competition to our striking department.H.H.

You need the nuclear/coal/gas station anyway to provide electricity when the wind’s not blowing, or when it’s blowing too much and the windmills have to be shut down to prevent them catching fire.

Though the windfarms are a jolly good source of income for the land owning classes. Better than having to work for it. Get it from subsidies.

Which is the real reason there are so many of them. And mugs like you support the nonsense.

    Re wind turbines

IMO the best option for our future power needs – however the governance and bureaucracy surrounding their establishment and operation is beyond a joke thanks in no small part to the governments’ (past and present) dreadful understanding and (lack of) regulation of the energy cartel….sorry industry.

I’ll caveat that by saying that it shouldn’t (and can’t) be our only power source and that a diverse range of power sources will be needed but, unfortunately it all depends on where money will be made by big business.

Bada Bing I think our current squad is good enough depending on injuries to win the SPL however,we finished imo in Europe quite strongly. Now looking at next seasons European challenge a quality striker would help us to do even better now I think Celtic should be doing all they can to regain there European challenge.H.H.

I’m not sure about that logic. A player would have to over succeed in Europe and the SPL to make a profit on an initial outlay of £5m+. Rhodes would be the better option as he is a Scottish international and playing and scoring for scotland may result in big offers.

I can see Celtic’s reluctance to pay large transfer fees.

Yes wind power has, at present, it’s technical drawbacks (enforced shutdowns etc) and yes a lot of windfarm operators are getting rich off the taxpayer through government subsidies but that is no reason to totally discount what in 20 – 30 years time will be (should be) the cheapest source of electricity available.

Greater regulation will be required when the subsidies run out.

Wave generation is surely the bestestest? More constant and reliable energy flow than windpower. Just needs more research. I don’t fancy windpower to be powering our nation on a calm day, whereas if the tides were to stop, electrical generation might just be the least of our problems.

As Jimmy Sanderson used to say, bunkum!

While turbines do have to be switched off if the wind is to strong or there is a lack of wind (a rare event in Scotland), there will be others in a different location that will still be supplying power, add that to power supplied by Hydro plants, in the future wave power and perhaps one or two existing power stations we will have more than enough to supply our power needs and thats even before we consider solar power which will have a limited use in sunny Scotland!

As for the “Land Owning Classes” as you call them does that include Farmers who have seen the price they get for their produce slashed by retailers and getting payments for wind farms on unused land to keep them going?

How would you feel about a Nuclear Power Station being built in your back garden? Would you be happy for your kids to grow up beside one?

  31. Serge says:

I agree Rhodes would be the pick of the two but we have Stokes & Hooper. Is Rhodes too similar? Think of the money men. You have two strikers and want to add another who is of similar build. We already have the mystery man Bangura who already appears to be not of Lenny’s liking. He cost £2m (alledgedly). If Bangura had not been signed I suspect that Celtic may have gone as much as £5m for Rhodes. We are faced with the prospect if Rhodes is signed with having at least two £2m+ players on the bench.

Will Sammi be sold? Will Celtic cash in on Hooper or Stokes to bring in Rhodes?

    Why did we sign Bangura?

Strange goings on in the forward areas. I suspect nobody will be signed. Possibly the big Albanian from Rapid if a deal can be struck. Lenny has been looking for a big strong forward and he seems to fit the bill and his price tag will look appealing to the money men.

Would love to see Celtic get Rhodes or similar but it just doesn’t add up with our recent purchase history!
