The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

  2. Watched the game from Saturday again: The WHOLE TEAM played really well. Definitely our best performance this season. Lustig looked very advanced at times, with good controlled aggression in defence; he was forward thinking and very good on the ball. Impressed by him. Wilson also showed great pace at times. He looked really comfortable. Like the rest of the team he strolled through the first seventy minutes. Izzy is getting back to his best. Untroubled defensively and bombing up the left wing all day. Charlie was magnificent again. Only just pipped for MOTM by young Tony.

Twardzik also looks very good- why then sign this Henrikson fella? And we have Dylan as well. Thought young filip looked very tidy. Big V, the V-Train, was like an unstoppable freight-juggernaut. So strong. It was so easy for him he could have been strolling on Rothesay promenade eating a Zavaroni’s fish supper and you wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference.

Also thought Matthews looks great in a more advanced role. Linked up superbly with others. Involved in final goal. Paddy was excellent as well. He did play wide left early on then moved into the center around the 60 minute mark- his pass for Izzy at the fourth goal was sublime, even Pirlo would have been proud of that. I thought Paddy, Izzy and Charlie linked up really well on the left. It was a great balance on the side of the pitch. But then the overall balance of the team was very impressive on Saturday.

Young Tony Watt had pace, power, determination, with lightning mental awareness- evidenced by his second half slide tackle on the goalie when he robbed his pocket and then nearly sneaked the ball into the net. Hooper ran the channels well I thought. He made a lot of space for young Tony at times and he was fouled an incredible amount of times. Which brings me onto Golem: the man is a disaster zone. I thought Caley could have had at least five yellows in that game- lost count of how many fouls went unpunished by the Golem.

Overall the whole team strolled through the first seventy minutes- we played with composure on the ball and our movement off the ball was excellent, with players always making themselves available- it was the way Celtic should always play.

I can confidently predict that Dick Advocaat will be the next Manager of Rangers —–

    Several minutes later –

Caller —— Can I speak to Jimmy .

    Jimmy —— Yes .

Caller ——– Jimmy —–heard you claiming that Dick Advocaat is going to be the next Manager of Rangers but he ‘s been at Ibrox for years.

Jimmy —– what are you havering about ?

Caller ———I’m telling you that there has been a Dick Advocaat at Rangers for years -he’s also known as Donald Findlay.

  5. The Battered Bunnet on

    Novel rumour from the BBC:

“Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot will host exist talks with Ibrox chiefs in the next 24 hours after being told he can leave.”

One dreads to think what happens if the exist talks break down.

“We’re sorry Kirk, but the talks have failed. You no longer exist.”

“But Boss, but… but I think I still exist. I mean, I think, therefore I exist. No? Descartes and all that. Yes?”

“No Kirk, that’s pure French Papist philosophical pap. It disnae work that way round here. You’re a loyal Scots Dumpling. It’s all over, like yolk in a microwave”

  6. The Swedes in my opinion are no better than DUFC or Hearts playing at their peak and I would fully expect to beat them at home in front of a frenzied support -roll on tomorrow

I was surprised to read that your perception of Fraser Forster is that he hoofs the ball up the field too often.

I think I was having a moment of perfectionism there after just watching an almost perfect performance for us for the first 70 mins on Sat- its not that I think its some chronic problem he has. Far from it. As you say at home he rarely does it. Which suggests its a matter of space. We don’t get the same space away from home. Sometimes I think we get sucked down into the home teams level, like we did with Ross C last week. Of course punting the ball rather than playing it from back helps them more than us. Nonetheless I do think the big man has to improve his kicking. I know he will. He has accelerated the improvement of his game in nearly all departments in the last year and half. He probably will go onto be out greatest ever goalie, if we can keep him that long.

Nice post. haven’t had time to read through the blog yet, but I think it should be noted that big Hamish McAlpine played for us too. Although Celtic weren’t listed among his Clubs, he joined the squad for pre-season 1 year, and played a few friendlies for us (out in germany I think). It was during the lean years (People’s garage on the jerseys I think…) but he definitely was at the Club for a short period as cover.

    Get well soon Hamish.

  14. with regards to the Spring Inn in Springburn, the pub next to the flats in sighthill was called the “Sidings” no ?, the Spring Inn was further up the road at balgary hill, across the road from the current KFC

  15. Snake Plissken on

I see Helsingborgs getting the first goal is being bigged up by the MSM.

Well how about this – Celtic get an early goal, that mob then have to go for brok and Celtic catch them out another 3 or 4 times and use our pacey players to put another couple in.

It works both ways and if Celtic get the first goal they need three more without reply.

I doubt that will happen very much.

Only PSG, Barcelona and Juventus have ever scored 3 goals against Celtic at Celtic park in European football.

Helsingborgs are not a pub team (like Sevco) or a part-time team (like Berwick) MSM but they are not in the class of any of those three teams mentioned above and I for one while not over-confident of a resounding win think Celtic have enough in their locker to finish this job.

They will not be pushovers but Celtic have shown that we can hurt them even when we don’t play to our best. They looked capable but ultimately toothless.

Even if they score first, Celtic have enough to get through by scoring themselves.

  16. V long time lurker, last posted years ago, so thought I’d join in the fun, again. I’m sure I done this the first time I ever posted, but since he claims never to have seen it. Afternoon Stephen with a “ph”, thank you for giving me the heads up about CQN all those years ago, still the best Celtic site. See you tomorrow evening.

  17. Although I think Lenny is doing the right thing by loaning Bangura out to AIK- I think he would have been better at another Scottish club…St Johnstone or Ross Co…to adapt himself to the style of Scottish football. But then maybe Lenny thinks a trip back home has a better chance of increasing his confidence. Confidence is the key with Bangura. I still think he will come good…I know, I know…medication time! Medication time!

  18. Don’t want to have a go at Bangura hopefully he is gone and will not return.

However i will have a go at our management and coaching staff.

How anyone with experience in the game could have watched him and thought that

    A) He was a player good enough for Celtic and

    B) His style of play was what we required at the time.

    Absolutely astounds me.

Surely its not too difficult to spot an attacking player who does not have a first touch,a prerequisite as far as I am concerned.First time I saw him I thought he was quite simply a poor player with no technique,I have seen nothing since to make me change my mind.

Spot the difference, many don’t like Ki,I do,but its obvious to me that he is a player and subsequently so do others.Hence he goes away with a profit left behind for us.

I put Murphy in the same bracket, never ever good enough for us.

  19. Looks like Paul67 has been busy as he new posters deadline approaches

Whtevale baths brought back some memories. I learned to swim there, Glasgow fashion. Teacher grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and through me in the deep end. Those were the days.

Boston No. 1 CSC is in a pub in Dorchester called the Banshee.

    A good bunch of lads.

    Hail Hail

  21. Apologies if already covered but referee tomorrow night is Spaniard Carlos Velasco Carballo. Career highlight so far seems to be sending off the Greek defender in the opening match of Euro 2012 for two innocuous looking fouls, and sending off the Polish goalie in the 2nd half.

No big Dan moments please Celtic, in a tournament where we have already picked up too many yellows it looks like they will be easy to come by tomorrow.

    Hail Hail

  22. The Battered Bunnet-Interesting stats, without sounding like a moaning Minnie ,I posted similar after first leg.I think if we can be a bit braver when in possession in MF we could really advance this team.We need to give the man with the ball 3 or 4 options of a pass.If we don’t ,the ball goes square then back to FF.That’s fine if there is nothing on,but a bit more movement off the ball is the answer IMO.HH

  23. JJ-You’re right mate,I think the fans are much more educated in how to succeed in Europe. The end result is everything.

Nail on Head mate. A Lawwell signing – I am almost certain of it. “No Neil… you can’t have Diawarra… I’ll tell you what, you can have this guy instead…”

  25. The shameless Teflon Man that is Duffield is on SSB tonight, come on Tommy fae Glasgow, you know you want to………..

  26. Guys – further to my comments about Willy Boly a couple of days ago, I was surprised to see we are in the mix for his signature. he really would (I think) be an excellent addition to the squad, and given his age etc – be a good bet to sell on at a later date if we continue to downsize like we are doing. He would, i think, command a good fee if he keeps developing.

  27. timmy7_noted

I should have said – your assessment of Murphy is also 100% accurate. An appalling signing.

  28. BK-I remember that ref,a rocket who spoiled the game by giving 2 yellows, both wrongly. We need to remember Dallas still connected to these guys.

  29. Lux Celt, not as sure as you that we can blame the business side of the organisation for such bad signings unless you are saying that Neil has no say in our transfer business?

With this type of signing my initial thoughts are always who watched him and for how long? We must be able to determine that and prevent it from happening………….Surely??????

I’m not blaming NL by the way not at all,I’m just confused how such seriously bad signings can happen?

Did the same guy who scouted Wanyama scout Bangura? I find it hard to believe.

    Cheers,

  30. Don’t know if this has been mentioned, but i see Campbell Ogilvie has resurfaced to state that there will be no fast trac for sevco to get back to the top league in the country. Does that mean that the players who were told this when thy signed their contracts can take fat Sally and Charlie boy to a tribunal for failed promises?

  31. Right off to get ready for my group meeting
