The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

  8. The EPL has the potential to put a massive premium on a player’s value, a factor which the SPL won’t have any time soon.

From an onward selling point of view Ki has gone to one of the best club’s possible. He’ll get a regular start and EPL exposure in a team which likes to play a passing game, and has the potential to catch the eye of a bigger club.

If I was Celtic CEO I’d be negotiating a 50% share of any transfer profit over the original £6m.

  9. Does anyone else experience a certain frustration and dismay when we pass the ball to FF only for him to launch it aimlessly up field? Its not that kickouts are still the Achilles heel of his game…its the fact that we often squander possession so cheaply. We are better than that. We have the players- all comfortable on the ball- who can bring the ball out from the back, particularly with Charlie there. Maybe I’m just being cranky- but its a bit of a pet hate. Is it down to impatience at times? There are moments when you see someone look for a Hollywood pass as well and squander possession- we do of course have a very young squad. Maybe with experience, especially on the Euro stage, we will develop more patience and not force things when we have possession. What is there to force? Lets just keep the ball. It might not be the way they do it in hammer throwing Scotland, but we are Celtic. We have always been the mavericks and rebels of the Scottish game. I did think there were some encouraging signs of it against Caley when we kept the ball really well.

    Need to get one!

On the subject of shirts – funny story: 3 of us in the pub in the golfin’ toon – Gretna(!) v Celtic at Murderwell. Totally unscripted – each wearing a polo shirt: green, white and yellow! Sitting at a table – white shirt wearer in the middle! Orcs at the bar! We won 2-1 – should have seen the daggers flying when we scored in the last minute (Chris Killen?!) and we were dancing on the table! I was wearing the green shirt – you will probably meet the other 2! Still talk about it to this day!

    So you don’t rate Hooper?

I was astounded by Tony Watt’s performance on Saturday-yet I was probably less surprised than most on here, having broken the habit of a lifetime, and in reply to AWE NAW,suggested that the manager put TW up front.

His performance was everything I hoped for.

He would NOT have performed like that without Gary’s selfless contribution.

Our 88 created the space, and did the selfless running, and he should be applauded for it.

My Dad spent a wee while last week running through the Helsingborgs game looking at precisely that issue.

According to him, we went long 27 times during the game, getting a first touch on the long ball only 9 times, and keeping possession on 5 occassions.

There are times when hitting it long is worthwhile, but it results, based on that game, on Celtic losing possession 82% of the time. Doesn’t sound like a winning European strategy to me…

  19. Please Celtic, do not play YNWA at kick off tomorrow, or at the start of the second half.

It is not the time for it.

Instead of the game starting with a mighty roar, as in days of yore, we get b….. lullaby!

The time to play it is before the teams emerge from the tunnel.

Let the opposition hear it as they wait to take to the field and make them nervous.

It’s all about the timing, as UEFA insist that it is their anthem that gets played as the teams line up for the handshakes, so, have it completed as the times trot out.

It was noticeable though how much pressure Helsingborgs were applying to the Celtic defence whenever we got posession – I said to my son at the time that they were making it very hard for us but that they couldn’t keep that up for the entire game.

I think that they probably sussed that we arent overly endowed with pacy players out of central defence – that plus the fact that we have barely started our season and are not at our sharpest.

They will probably try the same again tomorrow night – targeting Rogne in particular.

It shouldn’t be enough for them.

We can console ourselves that only a northern european side would have the work ethic to keep such a tactic up for so long – probably wont face that against better footballing sides as the competition progresses (except for Barca of course!!!).

I was surprised to read that your perception of Fraser Forster is that he hoofs the ball up the field too often. Admittedly, I only go to the Home games but it seems to me that he passes to one of his defenders nine times out of ten. I will look more closely tomorrow and Saturday.Well, Saturday anyway! I might be more intrigued in other aspects of the game tomorrow.
