The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

    Estadio on your blog page ,cursor hovering over picture tells me it’s a bathhouse.

    Any other words in hinglish with 2 hhs together ?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Apart from common sign-offs on here,canny think of any.
    I think bookkeeper is the only word in the language with three successive double-letters.
    Though it should be hyphenated,the hyphen is fast disappearing these days.
    Common usage,and language evolves……….
    Think Hamish played against Solothurn in Switzerland in July 1988.
    Still remember Roy Baines’ penalty save from Hamish at Parkhead in 1977.
    Good goalie but bit eccentric.
    Never played a competitive game. He bailed Celtic out during a 6 game pre-season tour in Switzerland (July 1988).
    Bonner was out injured anyway and Allen McKnight had transferred to West Ham. Andy Murdoch (3rd choice keeper) knackered his knee in the warm-up for the 1st game and Swiss ‘keepers played for Celtic in the first couple of games before Hamish McAlpine was drafted in to cover as ‘keeper for the rest of the tour.
    After the tour, Ian Andrews and Alan Rough were signed as cover until Bonner was fit again.
    I remember all this guff cos as a kid I kept a scrapbook of all Celtic’s games at the time. Seemed to lose heart in keeping the scrapbook up to date during 88/89 for some reason…..
    Enjoy yourself on Saturday. Personally I shall have a couple of quick ones in the Tollbooth prior to the game and a few after in the hope that Mrs Gretnabhoy will drive home. Well quite frankly she won’t have much of a choice!
    As for the drink…well
    Estradiol it’s like this.. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo and when the herd is hunted it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. this natural selection is good for the herd as a whole because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that Estadio is why you always feel smarter after a few beers !
    I remember that too. One of the Swiss goalies was called Knorr. Cue jokes about keeping Celtic out of the soup.
  9. I echo BT’s birthday wishes for two fine CQNers and apologise for being out of the loop.
    The Stab Inn ?
    More than one establishment in Glasgow deserves the name but one which fully deserved it was— The Spring Inn in Springburn . Does it still exist ?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~

    The one beside the Sighthill flats works for me-I worked with GKN Mills scaffolding in the early 80s,and it was next door.

    Went there once,couldnae believe how bad it was.

    Went there the next day-frequented The Cawdor beside Springburn BREL after that.

    Jee-zoh…….

  12. At last-very long time lurker (since sammi scored at ibrox new year 2 seasons back) but not clever enough to log in (i phone trouble) but hopefully now able to engage in all the various topics

  13. Following on from HAmish comment earlier “NO it wasnt Roughie”

    Anyone remember European game we played with Roughie in goals.

    HE came out box to make a clearance but sclaffed it to another forward so he came even further out to fix that mistake and unless memory playing tricks repeated this again he nearly ended up in the jungle covering one blunder after another but

    they didnt score and I think we eventually won.

    PS memory destroyed these days by apple juice and might have been hazed that night by some buckie.

    All log in issues sorted. Looking forward to regaling the board with the exploits of the excellent CSC here in Portland, Oregon in the excellent, but carniverous Kells Irish Pub. Will also report back on our our old pal Kris Boyd who plays for the local MLS team, The Portland Timbers. Lovely to see him playing in the old green and Whyte.

    Only one more sleep till the big game! Work is going to suffer something terrible today.

  15. Anyone hear the Michael Owen rumour?

    Nope, me either but Neil Lennon on Facebook has said there is nothing in it.
