The sectarian crime stats they forgot to destroy

1261

I’ve just caught Joe O’Rourke’s article on the Association site about the long-awaited released of statistics on sectarian crime in Scotland.  Joe suggests that the data from 2003 – 2010 was has been destroyed by the Crown Office.  I also hear that the Scottish Government will release entirely irrelevant ‘information’ today, specifically, where offences took place, not which groups were responsible or which groups were targeted by the offenders.

It takes a lot of effort to make sure you destroy data these days, you need to ensure not only that prosecutors permanently delete backups (which I really doubt they do) but also that the police similarly comply.

Fortunately all is not lost.  While it’s just about believable that regional police forces across Scotland and the Crown Office have acted in symmetry on this issue, I could have helped the First Minister, Alex Salmond’s, search for clarity by pointing him in the direction of British Transport Police (BTP).  The Transport Police are a separate force who operate across Britain and are run by the Home Office in London.  They are also a lot less proficient at destroying data.

They previously gave me detailed statistics on all incidents they record in connection with Scottish football for season 2007-08.  One of the most pleasing aspects of the information is the complete eradication of sectarian offences from all but one Scottish club, so the First Minister will be delighted to learn he has a smaller problem on his hands than he perhaps knew.  According to BTP, 11 arrests were made for sectarian offences in total, 10 Rangers fans and one Northern Ireland fan.

You can see the detail figures for all recorded incidents here (the majority of which are for non-sectarian issues).  From a total of 99 incidents (not all of which resulted in arrest), there were six involving Celtic fans, six for Dundee United, seven for Motherwell, four for Hibernian and five each for Aberdeen and Hearts.  Rangers fans were involved in a total of 48 incidents.

The BPT figures also make it clear that most incidents occur when fans travel to away venues.  The Force also confirmed that incidents surrounding the 2008 Uefa Cup final in Manchester were not included in these statistics.

To further aid Mr Salmond in his search for clarity on this issue, he can contact British Transport Police with a Freedom of Information request here, where they will be able to provide him (or you) with up to date stats.

Mags yes it is a farce, with Celtic agreeing to play the role of principal clown

As Neil Doncaster put it controversy sells the SPL

SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster believes recent controversies may help the league attract a new sponsor.

However, Doncaster said: “I think that a number of those issues have arisen over the last couple of years and that corresponds to a time when interest in the SPL – and the number of viewers we’re getting watching our games on television – is going up and up.

How will the controversial ending to the SPL pan out? no doubts some dodgy ref decisions on the way, and some more controversial Neil Lennon interviews to get all worked up about those rabid tabloids eh?

Yes I agree. Total farce. SFA and SPL are hun puppets. I am not interested in anything they say or think only what they do and their (SPL) charge this week against Celtic should be enough to stop Celtic supporters traveling to Tulloch. I have only been there once.(I dont live in Scotland). The last time my brother was there Hesselink got booked for scoring. F.ck em all!

  14. To all those travelling

Show? Farce will stop you mean?

Are you using Paul67’s notion of a slow train wreck re /car crash.?

Are you suggesting Celtic supporters should spend their money on watching a car crash or did I miss something? Is the car crash a show? I dont get it.

  16. Margaret McGill on

Ah I get it now. You want to fund ICT. Thats ok. Its a free country.

However, funding these bigots facilitates the end of Celtic in the long run.

Remember it was the SPL that seconded the complaint. In the current climate I would say that any Celtic supporter who seriously thinks that an away boycott is a bad idea for any reason and thus starve these bastards of their life blood by simply NOT SHOWING UP at a venue that they are despised anyway is too stupid to be a Celtic supporter.

  17. i am all for an away boycott, i am in my 3rd season of not going to away grounds in the SPL

Farce/Show/SPL/SFA all the same if you dont like what you see then done buy a ticket

    The farce/show/SPL/SFA will change

    Hope that helps

    Controversy (noun)

cheating, demonising, threats to life, anti Irish and/or Catholic bigotry, Sectarianism = SPL sponsorship opportunities.

I believe,Neil Doncaster, this is your Sepp Blatter moment.

Absolutely shocking statement to make. He is basically suggesting that more of the a I’ve is good for our game. I wonder if he’d be suggesting that if he was on the end of thread to his or his family’s lives, physical assault in his work place or bigotry due to the fact he is English.

I am absolutely disgusted by his inference to the bigots and degenerates that this type of behaviour is good for the SPL.

  23. Top of the morning to you all from a bright and crisp Fife.

Echo lionsroar67’s tribute to Dolly. He was another victim who was blamed for causing the furore that ended up in a tour to South Africa being cancelled because he would have violated the apartheid laws.

He was blamed by many of his English peers for being coloured and wanting to ply his trade instead of standing back when the rest of the white cricketers toured South Africa.

So blaming the victim is nothing new and is alive and well in Scotland with the SFA and Strathclyde police as we all know.

Good and sad about Lenny deciding to meet the GB in private. Good he is doing it and sad that he never did this in the first place instead of going public with the Sun. I take it that P.R. advice is deducted from P.L’s bonus and that is why it is never used?

For those going to Inverness, take care they are out to get us you know.

  24. Morning all

Good luck to all travelling to Inverness today, remember Big Brother is watching.

Interesting to see that training will be moved back to Barrowfield due to injuries. Had a conversation with a few on hear many months ago about injuries. A lot was mentioned that injuries were due to fitness levels & lack of training. Celtic employ the best medical & personal training staff around, makes sense that the new pitches (sand based) are causing all these hamstring pulls/tears.

Also, it brings the players back to Celtic Park on weekdays. Can’t be a bad thing to be closer to the fans.

  25. Good Morning. Grey but mild here in Hertfordshire.

I found this quite funny. From E-Tims…..

Official stats released today confirmed Scotlands worse fears: Catholics are a drain on Emergency Service resources.

The Scottish Government published stats show that despite only accounting for 16% of the Scottish population, Catholics find themselves involved in 58% of attacks.

These attacks, which have shown an increase by 10% in 12 months, inevitably involved a waste of valuable Police, Ambulance and Hospital staff time and resources. With the stats now public, the expected outcry has erupted and there were calls today for action to be taken to tackle this aspect of Scotlands Shame.

“This is truly a shocking revelation” said Mr William King, Councillor for Bridgeton in Glasgow, ” I thought it would be more!.”

Mr King expressed dismay at such reading during these cruel harsh times “Its hard enough for the Council to find the millions needed to fund the popular Marching season let alone having to find money to clean up the messes that these people leave after their antics’.

Mr King also voiced his concern at Bishop Philip Tartaglia’s condemnation of Scottish Society and his portrayal of Catholics as victims in Scotland. Mr King said “I think its important to note that more people that just those cultists named here, suffer within such stats. What about the attackers?, They must injure themselves, cuts and bruises dont always heal themselves”.

Mr King reiterated his call for Scotland to always be looking forward while keeping an eye on the past and said ‘Its simple, if they dont like it here, leave, who asked them to live here? The best solution seems clear to me and my friends and the Government know my door is always open if they want to discuss repatriation”.

Community Safety Minister Roseanna Cunningham published the stats and called for an end of such attitudes and attacks in Scotland. The Internet was immediately suspended while several Celtic websites wrote damning articles on the SNP actually doing something that seemed to be in the public interest and not anti-Catholic or Celtic.

“We cant have that” said Celtic Web Guru Brendan McLabour who admitted some Celtic fans found themselves in a quandry. “We dont believe a word that Salmond says so we dont quite know how to react here. Bugger!”
