The sectarian crime stats they forgot to destroy

1261

I’ve just caught Joe O’Rourke’s article on the Association site about the long-awaited released of statistics on sectarian crime in Scotland.  Joe suggests that the data from 2003 – 2010 was has been destroyed by the Crown Office.  I also hear that the Scottish Government will release entirely irrelevant ‘information’ today, specifically, where offences took place, not which groups were responsible or which groups were targeted by the offenders.

It takes a lot of effort to make sure you destroy data these days, you need to ensure not only that prosecutors permanently delete backups (which I really doubt they do) but also that the police similarly comply.

Fortunately all is not lost.  While it’s just about believable that regional police forces across Scotland and the Crown Office have acted in symmetry on this issue, I could have helped the First Minister, Alex Salmond’s, search for clarity by pointing him in the direction of British Transport Police (BTP).  The Transport Police are a separate force who operate across Britain and are run by the Home Office in London.  They are also a lot less proficient at destroying data.

They previously gave me detailed statistics on all incidents they record in connection with Scottish football for season 2007-08.  One of the most pleasing aspects of the information is the complete eradication of sectarian offences from all but one Scottish club, so the First Minister will be delighted to learn he has a smaller problem on his hands than he perhaps knew.  According to BTP, 11 arrests were made for sectarian offences in total, 10 Rangers fans and one Northern Ireland fan.

You can see the detail figures for all recorded incidents here (the majority of which are for non-sectarian issues).  From a total of 99 incidents (not all of which resulted in arrest), there were six involving Celtic fans, six for Dundee United, seven for Motherwell, four for Hibernian and five each for Aberdeen and Hearts.  Rangers fans were involved in a total of 48 incidents.

The BPT figures also make it clear that most incidents occur when fans travel to away venues.  The Force also confirmed that incidents surrounding the 2008 Uefa Cup final in Manchester were not included in these statistics.

To further aid Mr Salmond in his search for clarity on this issue, he can contact British Transport Police with a Freedom of Information request here, where they will be able to provide him (or you) with up to date stats.

Article spot on m8 and i will be emailing Mr Corrigan if any of you kind gents could point me in the right direction on how to get his email.

This clown is trying to stamp his authority with targetting the green brigade and with comments like that in the cup final he will be getting a piece of my mind.

Maybe our eddie aswell had the same sensitive ears ar wee pat and rob they only hear what they want to hear when it’s celtic or maybe their ears is so sensitive to all things celtic..

  4. The “Police Typing fail” video on YouTube featuring Ass Chief Con Corrigan is a big hit with several versions on this and other internet sites world-wide. The top version has had just under 276 thousand hits and I reckon when taking into account those videos on other sites this comedy item must have near to half a million hits in total.

    Serious questions:

    1. If it reaches a million and does Corrigan get presented with a gold disc by Youtube?

    2. How can a police officer reach the rank of Ass Chief Constable without being able to type?

    Wits,

is this a notion or a whisper, I like the notion and have no problem playing with a tenner, but I would only pass on a whisper.

  6. Celtic FC are shameful cowards. The Catholic church are only interested in their own political power and couldnt give two figs about their flock.

There I said it. The behaviour of the people who run our club is absolutely reprehensible.

Headlines over the last couple of weeks have been nothing but attacks on the support. They have been littered with disgraceful and innaccurate reporting. Celtic fans have once again been accused of being sectarian and even racist – neither of which is remotely true. And just as when the BBC wrongly accused Celtic fans of sectarian singing DURING the broadcast of the Scottish Cup final – Celtic have not even tried to correct this. They said nothing when McAskill and Corrigen publicly praised the Rangers fans for singing openly sectarian anti catholic songs. They have let the police clearly single out celtic fans and the club to be reporting for singing some songs that other people dont like (they are not illegal). They have done NOTHING about that. They finally sprung into action when the most incredible spin about the sectarian attack statistics was used. Trying to insinuate that most attacks take place at CP they sprung to the defence of themselves. Oh and firmly insisted that 14 incidents led to 14 expulsions.

Take an example today of how much spin is around the news (with neither Celtic nor the Catholic Church springing into action). The recently announced sectarian attacks lists (the ones they havent ahem destroyed yet) – show that, despite being 16% of the poputlation, catholics are subject to 60% of attacks. Is that the headline in the Herald today. No its not – its Two Scots charged with Sectarian crime each day. This headline doesnt indicate that crimes are on the increase – and they arent actually. Within the piece itself Roseanna Cunningham uses the figures to justify the new Bill but singularly fails to mention that Scotlands minority is most at risk. Oh the article eventually mentions this – but hidden away a bit later and away from the front page.

But even more revealingly – the Herald’s editorial lead is an example of super spin and tells us all we need to know about the intent of our establsihment. In an astonishing piece of logic the herald say of the stats that show catholics are far more likely to be attacked as “they (the statistics) confirm something the Roman Catholic hierarchy in Scotland has long maintained: that most such crime is against those of their faith. AS THE MAJORITY OF CITIZENS ARE PROTESTANTS THIS IS PERHAPS NOT ENTIRELY SURPRISING. So there you have it – its just simply cos there is more of them to attack us. This is remarkable logic.

Can you imagine a paper saying there are more attacks on black people cos there are lots more white people to carry out their attacks. Or indeed that there are more anti semitic attacks on jews cause of a rise in the mulslim population. No neither can I.

This utterly pathetic excuse will however be allowed to go unchallenged because neither Celtic nor the Catholic Church will respond.

All these calls for us to stop singing “illicit”songs – where will it stop – the answer is that it wont sto[p. They hate us and they want to allow us. They hate the fact that they have been called to acount for their prejudice and now they want to equalise.

So Neil calls for us to stop singing songs which are perfectly legal and which the sectarian majority find offensive.

Tell you what Celtic and the Catholic Church – we’ll do that when you both grow a pair and deal with the open prejudice and spin in Scotland.

    GLASGOW PRESS & CELTS

    BIGOTRY & MISREPRESENTATION

(To the Editor of “The Glasgow Star.”)

    Celtic Park.

    Glasgow 1st March 1906.

Sir,-The bigotry and anti-Celtic feelings of the alleged fair-minded athletic Press of Glasgow got full vent last week, on the occasion of the Hearts lucky victory. Since this club was formed the aforesaid scribes have at all times taken every little chance they could to belittle the club and its followers, and to gloat over its defeats. This week one alleged critic pays a tribute to the fair-mindedness of the Glasgow public in cheering a Hearts’ success, but of course has no explanation of the lack of local patriotism in the silence which greeted the Celtic’s goal. This spirit of anti-Celtic feeling has been so drummed into the Glasgow public by these Saturday afternoon reporters that the public cannot see any good in the Celtic at any time. This, however does not concern the club or its following. Criticisms are only to be valued by the standard of character of those who write them, and a recent law case gave us a sample of what our football reporting has descended to.

What does concern us, however, are the gross misstatements regarding the club’s management and the security of Celtic Park. We are told that Celtic Park has not sufficient turnstiles. Strange to say, it possesses more entrance gates than any ground in Scotland, and possibly England. Ibrox has 26 and Hampden, I believe, up till now 24. Celtic had 30 in operation on Saturday. Anyone who used his eyes on Saturday would have seen that the crowd did not come up till 2.30, and in the 1 ¼ hours till 3.45 to pass through 48,000 people deserved credit instead of abuse from these wonderful critics. The public had no patience on Saturday, and, as the police have proved, would not keep to the queue formation, which is of great assistance on such occasions.

The other point is the widely-spread statement of a barricade having given way at Celtic Park and three men being thrown down 10 or 15 feet and seriously injured. My Board considered it their duty to at once ask the Master of Works authorities to examine the field, and report on the alleged broken barricade. The authorities did examine the field, and found that no part of the structure for spectators had given way. The accident to the three spectators was caused by these persons climbing over the back of a barricade topped with spiked iron (where, of course, they had no right to be) and slipping, cut their hands on the iron spiking.

The explanation afforded by this letter is, of course, unnecessary, in view of the facts stated, but will be helpful to our loyal supporters in combating the fairy tales spread all round by malicious foes as to the safety of Celtic Park. The opinion of the critics previously referred to of course does not worry the club in the least. We have lived against it (and I think done fairly well) for 18 years, and feel quite easy in mind as to their ability to harm us or even worry us.

    Yours faithfully.

I expect open season on the players today, nothing more likely to get the support angry than injustice.

We have seen a co-ordinated strategy between the polis and meeja, now the sfa to drop into place.

    Be vigilant Celtic.

  16. The first thing that strikes me about the team is that NL has changed the formation from Motherwell, admittedly partly through injury, at least we can sing Ooh Ahh Samaras without being reported, – can’t we?
