The truth about St Johnstone and Inverness

880

St Johnstone have been a managerial proving ground in recent seasons.  Owen Coyle did a great deal of good work without achieving promotion to the SPL, but his two years there managed to sufficiently impress Burnley that they tempted him south.  The people of Burnley were probably as surprised as the rest of us when Own led them to the FA Premier League but five months into the season he jumped ship to Bolton Wanderers.

Coyle kept Bolton up in 2010 and again in 2011 but they slipped from the league last summer.  Poor form in the Championship soon turned sentiment against the manger and he was relieved of his duties in October.

Derek McInnes followed Coyle at St Johnstone and brought them into the SPL in his first full season but 15 months ago, after being touted for several jobs in England, he left for Bristol City, who, bottom of the Championship, sacked him today.

Steve Lomas is St Johnstone’s current manager and the latest to impress clubs south of the border offering larger pay-packets.  He would be foolish to accept a job from a struggling club who have sacked their manager mid-season.  As we have said several times before, managers receive a great deal of credit or blame but the success of a football club is infinitely more dependent on the entire structure of the club.

St Johnstone’s structure is just fine.  The same is true of Inverness, where Terry Butcher decided to stay this week, as well as Ross County and Motherwell.  The city clubs, Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, Dundee United and Dundee all churn through seasons as compulsive underachievers.  If they were able to do something about this fact our league would be the envy of most.

  10. Morning all. Dark and very wet here.

I see the BBC nationally are spinning the “protests” in the north as trouble between the Republicans and Loyalists. This even permeated Radio 4’s Sunday programme. It is all because the Protestant working class are poorer than the Nationalist areas, according to them. That outrageous lie was disproved on CQN during the week. Andrew Marr’s show is going to interview Robinson. Why don’t they simply say: the Protestants’ working class are now experiencing democracy at work and they don’t like it one little bit.

  12. Beautiful, bright and frosty start here in the Rebel County……..

  13. After an online look at the Celtic content in this mornigns rags, it should be noted ……….

Peter Lawell is playing an absolute blinder at the minute. The reporting of the euro league discussions in this mornings press is a testament to the leadership at the club getting things right and managing the club in a clever manner. ( you could argue that this could also be said to include NL being invited to Fergiestock this weekend, along with the best of the best in the management world.)

Without drama or grandstanding, pl outlines we are actually at the heart of the discussions.

He thankfully sees no need to point out the ECA are paying his flights and accom, or to sue someone for sex discrimination etc. When you have influence, you don’t need to make noise I suppose.

Think we are in as good a place as we cold be just now.

Meeja saying fans feel empty without Oldco …….no, we feel SAFE and delighted that the bias / bigotry has been removed from the sport in Scotland ……. and, when is the meeja going to accept that they are deid……hunbelieveable

  15. Yeah, I think it feels better.

My fear of losing to them, was always much stronger than my relief at winning.

I never did “get it up you I hate you” celebrations.

    Because I didn’t hate them.

But I was torn apart when we lost.

Just didn’t let them know that.

  16. Interesting reading on-line this morning with PL showing up Green for the numpty he is…without mentioning him. We may not play the new club for a while so the only entertainment we’ll get from them is off the pitch. Green allied with his new minister of propaganda should provide many a chuckle. Traynor tried to get us off the headlines midweek but in doing so only showed them up to be full of bluff and bluster; keep going like that and they’ll be more of a laughing stock than they are now.

  17. rascal capac

Exactly the same here. Just want to enjoy watching football without any nasty hate filled supremacist fans bouncying about.

Let them piss off and watch flag burning spectacles instead and leave the rest of us to enjoy our national sport.

  20. If the Belfast Flag is raised because its the birthday of the Duchess of Somewhere , is this a special occasion or a wee compromise ? And possibly a prudent one.

There must be so many of those Duke and Earl types around that they could afford to raise the flag for the most spurious of reasons, just to appease the Loyalists and stop them destroying the city.

It seems to mean a lot to them and serves as a primitive distraction :

” Look at the shiny shiny “.

  21. This flag thing…

Could it be new civil war?

My man in the British military has Northern Ireland ready to kick off.

    Before the fleg thing.

Maybe republicans will hold off now and watch the show.

  22. There is a list of 17 days that the fleg will be flown in Belfast. That’s what he elected Council agreed, But there are those who only like democracy when they control all of its decisions.

From the tv news footage it seems like most of the stone throwers etc are about 12. Is this a fair reflection of the situation on the ground?

  23. Bhoys

    Good morning CQNer’s,

The PSNI know exactly who is orchestrating the trouble. They’re waiting for the UVF leadership to restore their authority, but as always with this undisciplined outlawed gang, there is more muscle then brains.

Still, it was the New Democracy that lowered the ‘fleg’ over Belfast city hall.

The parallels between the demise of Rangers and NI loyalist is striking in its timing, that’s some double whammy.

In both cases the old supremacist attitude is still much to the fore amongst the troops and their leadership’s comedic statements only stoke it up further.

The new, refreshing landscape is something the NI Nationalists have waited a long time to see, and it’s the same with Celtic supporters.

We have time on our side my friends, sit back, breathe in the fresh air in our New Democractic landscape and relax, we have time on our side and leaderless rivals in disarray.

Just watched a wee news clip re the events in Belfast ..Film of rioting ” Loyalists ” wearing the seemingly obligatory Shell Suit. Female reporter can’t help saying —

” Stereotypes are silly but some of these people really live up to the European stereotype of what it’s like to be British “
