Time on the bench gave Hooper space

1040

This season, Gary Hooper has looked well below form of last term; his touch, movement and goals record don’t match up, but he came off the bench on Thursday to score a truly excellent goal.  Controlling a difficult ball in the centre circle, with defenders in close attendance, he picked out Giorgios Samaras before sprinting past his markers and finishing.

The winner against Motherwell was less spectacular but required sharp movement and spatial awareness.

Footballers cannot always play through bad form, sometimes they need a break, even for an hour on the bench, to get a different perspective on how they and the team play.

Despite his return to form I would retain the same 4-2-3-1 formation against Inverness next time out.

Newsnight discussion last night was about NOTW using private detectives to find dirt on lawyers representing the people who had their phones hacked. Tom Watson MP on the show said NOTW are “an organisation who are rotten to the core”

This NOTW corruption festered and grew in a time where corruption was rife in politics (expenses scandal) and the banking system (credit crunch)

The lot of these chancers were on the make at the same time hardly a coincidence and now the ordinary people are paying for their greed

RE Phil. I only hope his strategy is to get every Celtic fan to wake up to what MAY happen. I would return my SB’s in a second. I’ve been going for over forty years and I can’t imagine life with out supporting and being a part of our community. But IF Dermott sanctioned this then it’s the end. F that!!!!! Put THEM where we all know they belong. HH.

Thanks for that reply. I thought I wasn’t getting one. I’ve annoyed a few people today :)

I will be shocked if a deal is struck mate, seriously. Shocked.

This isn’t about making sure it only happens once. If a rogue asteroid hits the Earth and wipes it out, that will only need to happen once to do damage we’ll not recover from. Rangers have urinated on the other clubs, torched the integrity of the national game, they have, for all we know, lied to the sporting authorities as to all manner of things related to contracts …

The damage it will do, to integrity, to legitimacy, financially, in terms of our national sports reputation … it will be incalculable.

The damage to our own club if we participate will be devastating.

As we’re all aware, a law is being passed right now through the Scottish Parliament, which has no business being considered, far less debated, far less voted on. It is un-necessary because laws already exist, punishments already exist, for people who behave in a discriminatory manner.

You have more faith than me in the notion that we will find ourselves in a position of power should this come to pass. In fact, my disagreement with you on this issue is so vast it is positively Grand Canyonesque. If this happens, over our objection, we will have been stripped of all basis on which to negotiate anything. We will be demonstrably weak.

The league will have legitimised fraud. The Scottish game will be irredeamably corrupt, its power solely in the hands of one team. If they can steamroller this through – at the weakest moment in their history – I have no faith, NONE, that we will secure ANY victory of note over them or their allies, off the field, for decades, if we are lucky.

It must not be allowed. We seem to be agreed on that. The question is how we put ourselves into the best position we can for making sure it does not happen. The club does have cards to play, as you’ve said.

For me, this will be the defining moment for our club’s future. All we are insisting on is that the rules which would be applied for a Motherwell or Hibs or Hearts – or Celtic, and let’s not kid ourselves, we would be HAMMERED – are applied to Rangers. Our position is that the present rules are clear, that they WILL punish this kind of activity. No new rules are required, just the application of those which presently exist. Rangers must not be made a special case, although they are a special case.

They will be the first club in Scotland to be found guilty of fraud. In England, teams have been demoted divisions for the same.

They will have HMRC debts equivalent to the rest of British football COMBINED.

They may have forged player contract documents, or hidden those documents from the authorities.

    Who knows what else?

They are a special case alright. A very special one. Deserving of harsher penalties than ever been imposed before.

A club guilty of such activities cannot get away with it because they are “too big to fail.”

What price our league then? What price Scottish football? The game will never recover from it.

THAT is our argument. And winning it is the most important event in our club’s recent history. If, as some suspect, we will be the lone voice of dissention then it becomes imperitive we call this what it is … a shabby corruption of the game.

And we act accordinly in the aftermath.

The ONLY circumstances in which Celtic should endorse a parachute deal for newhuns co back in to the top echelons of Scottish football is if as a part of tha deal Celtic are to be leaving Scottish football.

In all other senses such a development would be beyond contempt…

  9. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Good evening to all the Celtic Family from a dark and damp Central Scotland. I speak for no one but myself I am an older supporter who has watched Celtic from the start of the Jock Stein era.Now as you know for a large part of time Rangers appear to have been cheating by not paying the tax man his due.Now I believe you are innocent until proved guilty this has served our Country well for many many years so I will say that if Rangers are found guilty of a tax scam and are hit by a large bill and have to go out of business I will accept justice has been done. Now if they try to come back as a newpac company and get any assistance what so ever from Celtic I will be finished with both Celtic and Scottish football as during the time I spent a lot of money following Celtic and will never get a penny back as Rangers were cheating but more importantly I have spent many years following Celtic while Rangers were cheating and I can never get a minute of those years back.I would hope many other Celtic supporters would feel the same way and Celtic as well as Rangers would be in serious trouble. So to the Directors of Celtic Football Club stand up for everything that is right in sport and say NO to any assistance for Rangers and keep our great Club and its support for future generations.H.H..

  10. iPaddy McCourt on

We don’t know yet what the Celtic board intends to do about the now likely hun insolvency situation but I just want to say that if they are compliant in financial doping and letting those CHEATS away with a 10 point deduction before carrying on as normal then I will DEFINITELY NOT be renewing my season ticket next year as I want no part whatsoever in a corrupt and morally bankrupt game.

I suspect that tens of thousands of Celtic season ticket holders feel exactly the same way.

    Lawwell, you have been warned.

  11. Auldheid , battered bunnet,

If rangers were to go into receivership , administration etc , I would have thought this would be a matter for our PLC, and not individuals.

Phil’s source may well be robust, but , I would have thought this would be a board matter rather than one for individuals.

I am not an expert on our constitution, but I suspect that iif people really do feel strongly about it , they could call out the board at an EGM, and given that shares are around 45p a pop , it would require a relatively small investment ….now that would be interesting.

  12. Did anybody see Ranjurs supporter Mark from Fife on Countdown this afternoon? It gave me no end of pleasure to see him, in time honoured hun tradition, misspell his first three words before I had to leave for work.

    I’m a small, petty man, I know!

  13. The Battered Bunnet on

    Clashcitybhoy

Funny that, I did a wee exercise a couple of months ago and found that I was 1 phone calls away from almost 30% of the Celtic shareholding – 1 call away from each individual that is. That’s a lot of phone calls.

Add in the blogs, and the opportunity to gather sufficient proxies to force a vote is feasible.

That said, the Celtic Trust has been trying for years to pull together such a consensus. Perhaps this is the very issue to mobilise.

  14. If our board are ever in any doubt about what course of action to take in the wake of rangers demise, they should consider a ballot/ referendum of

the season ticket holders at Celtic park. Hypothetically there may be two questions based on definitive information.

    1. Save Rangers with a ten point reduction and the newco goes straight back into the SPL, this is based on the belief that other clubs in the SPL

would also fail if they disappeared and it would cause the collapse of the SPL.

2 If the latter part of the above, ie the collapse of other clubs, then leagues was to occur, do we let it all go and start again or go to another league.

I remember what PL said at the AGM, basically that he was worried about the future of scottish football.

The Celtic support united is a formidable force, it’s voice should be heard clearly on this matter. If the owner/board get it wrong then they may find

that their season ticket holders vote with their feet anyway.

  15. Wow, Have never seen such an explosion of anger from such a range of fans to a story….someone on the communication side of the Club surely reads this blog.

the striking thing today os how Phil’s story, which I sincerely hope has been wrongly sourced has got a unanimous view from the church that is the Celtic support.

Celtic, support the Huns in any way at your peril. Frankly I want to see them absolutely buried

  19. Saying Celtic will have the chance to push for real change in all of this is rather short sighted. As in my opinion the exact opposite will be true. We are in very very dangerous times.

The SPL rules are set up weighted in favour of the “Old Firm” as you all know. Every motion must be passed by an 11-1 at least. If us and them vote as a block, nothing happens without our say so.

Now consider the position we would be in should they be beholden to the rest? We would no longer have the block vote and who knows what they would promise to the “wee” teams in return for a favourable vote.

Even worse, the SPL rules do not actually state it is 11-1 vote. They say an 83% vote must be had to carry any motion. If we have a period where Rangers are liquidated, and therefore do not have their voting share pending shenannigans, what percentage does our “No” carry? 10 “Yes”‘s gives you 90% and the “wee” teams can club together to vote ANYTHING through.

    Read that.

    ANYTHING THEY WANT

Look at the big picture, there is severe danger afoot and we are far, far, far from having any control or whip hand.

  20. getting fed up with celtic fans phoning in complaining about motherwell tactics against Celtic – teams can do what they want – its the officiating that governs the game and its charlie richmond who is responsible for ensuring the game is played within the rules.

btw – it wasnt only the tackling which went unpunished – its was the corner kick decisions and shys etc… terrible performance and one which the SFA should score low and demote if necessary.

once the laws are goverened properly , motherwell and other clubs will soon set up to play the game properly.

  25. Battered bunnet,

I realise that the trust have tried to pull shareholders together on several occasions.

Whilst I admire some of the work they do, given they do not restrict themselves to shareholder issues, then I would not support an initiative spearheaded by them.

On the other hand if it was the Celtic trust + CQN + KDS, and they could force either an EGM , or a motion castigating the board for acting against the interests of minority shareholders, then that would be interesting.

  26. No!

No! Your club won’t go through with this, will apply the brakes?
