Timely boost as Mackay-Steven signs pre-contract

1749

Delighted we have made the pre-contract signing of Gary Mackay-Steven.  Gary signed for Dundee United from Airdrie in 2011 as a 20-year-old and soon became a popular figure for United fans.  He has been one of several members of Jackie McNamara’s squad who has attracted attention this season and will be a loss to the former Celtic defender.

It’s all about the system

Gary is left-footed but can play on either side of the 3-behind-the-striker Ronny Deila likes to deploy.  He is industrious and has a bag of tricks that makes for a good highlights video on YouTube.

I watched him turn it on against Dundee on New Years’ Day, and fondly recall a virtuoso Scottish Cup performance at Ibrox, but I’m always reluctant to offer a recommendation on a player we’ve only seen against Celtic, or in the odd TV game.  The most encouraging part of this deal is that Celtic will have watched the player literally dozens of times – we want to get our first choice players, and we don’t want to be dependent on the recommendation of a foreign-based acquaintance.

United may consider cashing-in on the player this month, but I’m sure it won’t be for the £80k Sheffield United offered earlier this week.

This will be a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s important game against Hamilton Accies, who I’ve watched a fair bit of this season.  They are a far better team than we thought they were went they left Celtic Park with a win in October, while their pitch provides a different challenge.

It’s as game I expect us to win but I’ll be happy when the result is in the bag.

Many thanks to everyone who booked tickets for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Night on Friday 13 March at the Kerrydale suite.  You can book at the bottom of this page, or email me if you’d like to hold a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com .

The event has been live for less than 24 hours and we are already well on the way to funding the school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.

  1. FROM ACCIESS WWW – looks like game ok

SATURDAY 8am UPDATE – Pitch is being cleared of overnight light snow. This isn’t presenting a problem. All main road access routes to stadium are fine. Parking at Caird St / Beckford St then a 5 min walk to the ground. As it stands we are ok. [There is slight snow flurry forecast for 9am ish, but it is forecast dry and temperature +1 thereafter till kick off.] There is no inspection planned as things stand.

Disgraceful (but not surprising) response from the police last night, and the usual cover up from the media. Not being paranoid but it would be a whole different story if it was us, though I genuinely dont think our support would conduct themselves in that manner.

A guy with a green top was picked out from the mob and almost huckled, but during the struggle called the polis a fenian b******, at which point he was immediately apologised to and released.

  6. Any news on how the SMSM are reporting the disturbances in Govan last night? The SKY guy last night was well into one’s as bad as the other mode. He was about to say that the hun hordes attacked the Hearts fans inside the ground, checked himself and said instead that fighting broke out between the rival fans. The BBC, as far as I am aware, ignored completely what happened inside the ground and merely reported that the home support called for the dismissal of the Board outside the main entrance.

  7. I hope Ronny D and Johnny C got home safely last night from Mordor.

Really looking forward to seeing us go up a gear now. ;)

Saddened but not surprised by the scenes at ipox last night i would hope some concern members of the public would send those links onto to the police superintendent asking just what does it take for police Scotland to arrest these scumbags

BBC Scotland coverage of the NewCo tribulations cannot be taken seriously ever since they appointed Dick Wilson as their Ibrox correspondent.

Talking of which, what kind of “sectarian abuse” do NewCo fans throw at Hearts fans??

  12. From a Hearts forum –

“I hate Celtic more than anyone.

But I hope they hammer the two year old sevcodead zombie filth in the semi final.

I would normally want anyone to beat Celtic, but I hope the Tic reach double figures which I think they could.

Smash the two year old filth Celtic 2nd February.”

  13. And

“I went in at 7pm and the lines were all clear, the boxes were clear then suddenly half the ground staff cleared off and the others focused on clearing the area off the pitch at the front of the main stand…why on earth clear an area that isn’t even on the playing surface.

All winter pitches are cleared by a team of sweepers…

It was clearly a deliberate move not to treat the pitch, but why??? No idea!!!!

    Something stinks here!! “

A home and away since the late 50s Hertz pal was at the game..

He described his journey out of and away from the stadium as being seriously scary –

2 comments- ” foaming at the mouth crazies with murder on their minds”/ a police force in serious dereliction of it’ s duty”

  15. Burghbhoy –

I can honestly understand your dilemma. I was resigned to watching the semi on TV and was happy at that. I wasn’t getting a ticket so no decision to make. Then my son and I received a letter from Celtic offering us tickets. We discussed it and finally decided, we’re Celtic supporters. We go to all home games and some away. We go to see and support Celtic. The opposition is irrelevant.

Decision made. We’re going. We will wear no colours and take the car and hopefully enjoy a Celtic victory in their first game against the other mob and then look forward to the final.

    Hail Hail.

Play Empoli away / late afternoon today.

A good yardstick re team spirit / form and mental strength. The pre Mancini Inter would have struggled to cope with the effort and desire of Empoli.Inter should bury Empoli -the issue is – will they ?

  18. Never mind the lack of coverage to the mayhem last night, what about the sudden loss of memory from all the media outlets concerning King and Murray?.Someone correct me if I am wrong,or just a bit wrong, but is it not Stock Market rules, not SFA,that you are automatically banned for 5 years from holding any position in a company,if you have been involved in a liquidation event?.Never mind the “Fit and proper”test for King which can be fudged.

All the bluster in the media today,”An EGM,new Nomads, get the board out, install our men”,not a question from any of them as to “How will you achieve this, you are banned”.

With Ashley being stopped by the SFA,I am sure he will be watching carefully from the sidelines.

42 days to get an EGM.They are raiding cookie jars at the moment.WTF.

An example last night of the depths this unholy crew have slumped to.

No undersoil heating,no staff to sweep the pitch.

  19. With regard to the forthcoming LC Final, if I were Celtic I would be voicing my concerns on spectator safety to the SPFL, The Police and copied to the SFA and First Minister.

I would be saying that events at Ibrox and the perception held by their support of being victims greatly increases the chance of violence and steps to minimise it should be considered in advance.

I’d also add that if the request is not heeded and there is violence of a level requiring a post match summit with the Scottish Government, Celtic would be unwilling to attend.

Get yer retaliation in first and stop Celtic getting dragged into a problem not of our making.

The media are covering it up , the police are not carrying out their duties and the football authorities will do nothing about last night incidents at Ibrox .

The semi final will provide these animals with another platform to express their rage at the fact that they let their club die .

Celtic should be demanding increased levels of security for the team and our supporters for this game and making sure our club are not dragged into another shame game style scenario where we end up taking most of the blame and our supporters suffer the consequences.

It’s time to force the police and the football authorities to do their job .
