Turn in Uefa’s rich and poor battle, Messi will be ready

520

Amid the noise ahead of our Champions League duties the most important news in European football went largely below radar. Angel Maria Villar Llona pulled out of the race to become Uefa president ahead of next week’s election. This leaves former Ajax chief, Michael van Praag and Slovenian FA president, Aleksander Ceferin, left in the race.

This is good news. The big Spanish clubs have been prime movers in clawing as much power for Europe’s richest leagues, their cause would have been boosted if Villar Llona was elected. By contrast, van Praag’s Ajax heritage reflects those marginalised by smaller TV deals, including Celtic.

We don’t want an inextricable slide towards a Champions League where meritocracy is replaced by the rich looking after themselves. This is the desire of rich clubs in Spain and Germany, who worry about the commercial drift towards the FA Premier League.

Instead, regionalisation of Europe’s leagues is a far better option, even for the Spanish, who if they want to earn commercial deals comparable to the English and Welsh league should team up with Portugal and France.

Every month I’m asked by an 11-year-old, “Will Celtic win the Champions League in my lifetime?” If we want to be champions of Europe again we need to end the national league structure which has disenfranchised more than half of the continent already, including many former powers in the game.

News that Leonel Messi has returned to light training after injury means he is almost certain to start against Celtic on Tuesday. His base fitness and lifestyle is such that a few days training is all that he’ll need to be match ready.

  1. Cowiebhoy: If you are staying in Mississauga there is a small place called Kilbride about ten miles away. One of the roads there is a background picture for Microsoft Office.

Anyway, of greater interest there is the graveyard. Most people buried in it were Irish and most burials took place from 1830 – 1900. As you visit each grave and read the inscriptions you get a real insight into the plight of the Irish in the 19th century and especially the struggles of those who fled after the famine. Well worth a visit if you have the time.

  2. Survey completed but I doubt it will be read or if the truth be known do any good, they will do everything they can to keep our support criminalised, they hate us, they would see us gone and they would see us gone if they thot they could get away with it.

  4. The petiton / survey that’s on the go…..

The FAC bill has the Celtic PLC-Hierarchy’s finger prints all over it.

And yet, run of the mill Celtic supporters are spending time, year after year filling in. petitions / surveys to try as best they can to slacken if not, remove the shackles of an, anti-Celtic bill that was conceived in the Celtic PLC-Board room with, Paul McBride QC and, the kowtowing PLC-Board who agreed to the bill that would be aimed at leveling out the sectarian arrests at Scottish football matches.

To cut a long story short….

Get rid of the, Fergus McCann-installed-old-firm-orientated-PLC-Hierarchy.

    Until that is done….

Yeez can fill out survey’s till hell freezes over.

Almore … sorry to eavesdrop .. but that is interesting. I hadn’t heard of Kilbride. will need to give it a look one day.

I used to see a girl who lived in Glencoe, Ontario (2 hours west of Toronto). About 15 years ago, I took her back to Scotland, and we went up to Glencoe … we went through the cemetery … she found her family (Mitchells) who had come from Glencoe, and said the names on the headstones were almost identical to the families she knew in Glencoe Ontario … like the families from that area had moved to Canada and settled in Glencoe Ontario en masse ….

    Swawex Ferguson or Stretford end?

Top one ‘avin a derby with over 130 years of ‘istory this weekend, innit!

  7. MIT: Kilbride comes from the Gaelic ‘Cill Bhríde’ meaning Brigid’s Chapel. The area was obviously settled by Irish people in the late 18th/early 19th century. There are lots of similar places all over North America but the graveyard there was particularly poignant because lots of info was given on the headstones.

I visited Fergus on the way to Tobermory and the Scottish influence in both towns was very strong.

Almore … I like Fergus, and Tobermory is beautiful. It is a very popular diving spot … beautiful, but the water is freezing!

Mr. Murray seems to have a battle on his hands with KN.

Hopefully, LG is good to go for the weekend. I like young Dembele, but I dont think I would want him starting alone up front. Whatever happened to Ciftci? Is he injured? Still with us? Just not in BR’s plans?

Think AM should beat Nishikori … but he will have to win a few tough matches if he is to win the Open.

He will face the winner of DelPotro and Wawrinka in the semi …. either one will be a tough match. Mentally, you dont know which Wawrinka will show up, but If he is on, Wawrinka can blow anyone off the court, and DelPotro is looking very good since his return. His backhand isn’t as dominant as it once was (due to the multiple surgeries), but he is an even smarter player as a result, and still has that big serve and forehand. If he takes the game to Murray, he could win, but Murray’s superior fitness may be the difference.

and then there is the likely small obstacle of Djokovic in the final …

  13. Following the refreshing (ridiculous, isn’t it?) truth-telling in the Daily Mail re Sevco, headline apart, can we say when someone gets something right, rather than fups uck, that he’s made a Kent of it?

‘Ally McCoist believes it will take Rangers another “two or three years” to become a dominant force in Scotland.’

To be fair he didn’t actually say that but the BBC did. ‘Dominant’…muppets.

  17. I’m sick of the run up to the game already. Just want it out of the way, 3 points on the board & get back to enjoying my football.

  18. Monikers are fine on a blog, but football clubs shouldn’t be able to use them for official league tables/fixtures etc. especially new ones people are just getting used to.
