Turn in Uefa’s rich and poor battle, Messi will be ready

520

Amid the noise ahead of our Champions League duties the most important news in European football went largely below radar. Angel Maria Villar Llona pulled out of the race to become Uefa president ahead of next week’s election. This leaves former Ajax chief, Michael van Praag and Slovenian FA president, Aleksander Ceferin, left in the race.

This is good news. The big Spanish clubs have been prime movers in clawing as much power for Europe’s richest leagues, their cause would have been boosted if Villar Llona was elected. By contrast, van Praag’s Ajax heritage reflects those marginalised by smaller TV deals, including Celtic.

We don’t want an inextricable slide towards a Champions League where meritocracy is replaced by the rich looking after themselves. This is the desire of rich clubs in Spain and Germany, who worry about the commercial drift towards the FA Premier League.

Instead, regionalisation of Europe’s leagues is a far better option, even for the Spanish, who if they want to earn commercial deals comparable to the English and Welsh league should team up with Portugal and France.

Every month I’m asked by an 11-year-old, “Will Celtic win the Champions League in my lifetime?” If we want to be champions of Europe again we need to end the national league structure which has disenfranchised more than half of the continent already, including many former powers in the game.

News that Leonel Messi has returned to light training after injury means he is almost certain to start against Celtic on Tuesday. His base fitness and lifestyle is such that a few days training is all that he’ll need to be match ready.

  6. The petiton / survey that’s on the go…..

The FAC bill has the Celtic PLC-Hierarchy’s finger prints all over it.

After the Shame-Game, Neil Lennon took the entire blame and, the PLC-Hierarchy jumped into bed with the anti-Celtic establishment and cooked up the OBA and, threw Celtic’s innocent, faithful fans to the mercy of the hate-filled-cops who won’t rest until the Green Brigade are banned form CP period.

And yet, run of the mill Celtic supporters are spending time, year after year filling in. petitions / surveys to try as best they can to slacken if not, remove the shackles of an, anti-Celtic bill that was conceived in the Celtic PLC-Board room with, Paul McBride QC and, the kowtowing PLC-Board who agreed to the bill that would be aimed at leveling out the sectarian arrests at Scottish football matches.

To cut a long story short….

Get rid of the, Fergus McCann-installed-old-firm-orientated-PLC-Hierarchy.

    Until that is done….

    HAVE YOUR SAY

When you score the winner in one of the most controversial chapters of a Scottish sporting occasion with true global appeal, a place in history might be the expected reward. Alas, the dustbin of history is where Mark Wilson’s decisive strike has been consigned. The defender’s goal sent Celtic through to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup at the expense of Rangers on the night of Wednesday, 2 March, 2011 at Parkhead.

That goal has been buried under an almighty heap of rubbish – in the form of daft on-field behaviour that brought three Rangers dismissals; a stupid touchline confrontation at time up between Celtic manager Neil Lennon and Rangers assistant Ally McCoist, and the ludicrous reaction to both that led to preposterous government involvement and then dreadful lawmaking.

  16. If Celtic deny them any time on the ball in the middle of the park, they win handsomely .

Their big name signings, Barton and Kranjcar both need space and time to pick out passes.

Their defence is one of the worst in the SPL.

They create few chances and miss most of them.

This has the makings of another MON 6-2 stamped all over it.

Forget the ” anything can happen” in these games. If Celtic play to their capability, and they play to theirs, Celtic win by 3.

Never ever been so confident on the build up to a game.

They better hope the ref helps them keep it respectable.

  17. T’n’T

    I like your thinking.

It will be v. interesting to see how Sevco line up.

As we see so often @ CP, even poor sides are hard to break down when they pack their own final third.

My fervent desire is that Warbs formulates a game plan based on the SC semi.

    Which he might do.

We’re not that side and are stronger than them in every position on the park.

MIBbery apart, if we play as a team, we win …

    VIP

  18. Jungle VIP

their game plan will be to play on the front foot. Well, if their manager has any sense it will.

You can’t sit in with Wallace, Senderos, Hill, Wallace, Kiernan ( or whatever he’s called). They have the turning capability of a small bungalow.

It’s damage limitation . Go for it and they might get a 5-2.

Sit in, it might take us till the80th minute, ……..to get our 7th:-))

  19. Tactically I think Sevco will sit back against us and look to hit us on the break. When we lose the ball there is a lot of space behind Sinclair and Roberts/Forrest. If they can break quickly they could (in theory) stretch our two man midfield. So really they should play O’Halloran and Miller and get support up to them from Forrester or Halliday (not sure if they are fit or if they play together). If they go for all out attack our pace should rip them to pieces.

  20. Morning all.

If Celtic deny them any time on the ball in the middle of the park, they win handsomely

And for this reason Bitton shouldn’t play. He slows everything down to snails pace with his backward and sideways passing and negates Brown who loses his drive when playing at a slow pace. Play Henderson, he has the experience of playing against them from last season when he always seem to do well.
