Turning under-performance into awesomeness

661

I’m reliably informed Legia will not ‘park the bus’ on Wednesday.  Instead, with a three goal lead, they have enough legroom to play their normal game, attempt to compete in the middle of the park, and expose holes at the back, as they did last week.  What’s more, they’re unsure they would be able to park the bus successfully for an extended period.

Set aside the debacle what was our defensive performance for a moment.  The period of last week’s match Ronny Deila should initially concern himself with is the opening 25 minutes, when Celtic largely bossed the game.  We then have to consider the 40 minutes we looked comfortable with 10 men; not an insignificant achievement away from home in Europe.

In short, Legia are a team which for large periods of the game we looked to have the measure of, despite the anomalies of playing a debutant, an inexperienced youth and with a left back who was left out.  We should do far better at Murrayfield.

Legia believe they are going through.  They unquestionably have the upper hand but the Celtic collapse in the final minutes, when we appeared to be too busy picking fights than sticking to plan, distorted the perceived difference between the teams.  Celtic didn’t just underachieve, they did so on an epic scale.  What Legia don’t know, is what a highly-functional Celtic team looks like.

We need to transform that epic failure into the kind of performance we are capable of in Europe.  The defence needs to find the form which broke so many records last season.  Ronny needs to find some of his awesomeness.

The reality is, despite last week’s debacle, we’re still in this tie – and should plan to go through.

Interesting article on Miroslav Radovic of Legia Warsaw on the UEFA website.

He scored 2 goals against us in the first leg and was signed by Legia in 2006 as a 22-year-old attacking midfielder.

Legia don`t appear to have signed him as “a project”, however, and have signed him up on new contracts even though he is now 30 and would have limited resale value. Compare this with our approach re Samaras and Commons.

This is shrewd business on Legia`s part; Radovic has scored 14 goals in Europe which is more than half the total scored by the entire Celtic squad available for selection for Wednesday night.

When asked about the secret of his success, Radovic puts it down to experience. This is the very quality that we lack when we fill our team with too many unproven projects who may or may not be any good (Bangura, Balde, Biton, Johansen etc) and players who have never played in Europe before. We need to get the balance right.

  4. Started going to games in ’81 Roy Aitken was my first Celtic hero.

Only wish I had seen the young Roy at Ibrox ripping into them.

At the end of his Celtic time people (fans & media) were starting to have a go at his performances. People with short memories or all players have a sell by date or fans jealous of his Scottish international career whatever it was he probably left at the right time.

Not sure, but the upper tier is open so it will be at least 30,000. I was at the Celtic Park ticket office yesterday to get my tickets but they couldn`t tell me how many tickets had been sold so far or how many Legia had been allocated.

kevtic 23:20 – I refer you to ‘The Glory and The Dream’ by T Campbell/P Woods

They closed their book (thoroughly recommended, like all their work) with a summary of the careers of various significant Celts throughout the years until time of publication obviously

They highlighted the debate within the support regarding RA and his good points and bad points.

It’s wrong to suggest that the support turned on him late in his Celtic career. Some of us expressed reservations long before. I felt that many Celtic people overlooked his failings. I thought that people thought tactical organisation was a dirty word. This was a period where Aberdeen won a CWC and DU reached a UEFA final. Defensively we were a poor 3rd to those clubs.

I mentioned earlier that I felt he was hard done to at CB and IMO his best performances of Celtic invariably came away from that position.

However I was there the day he scored twice at the fortress of Darkness as an 18 year old and shut them up with a 20-yard volley into the Copland Road end just as they were launching into their UDA all the way anthem, a moment I’ll never forget :D

  16. Por Cierto

    Haha, good point.

They maybe have a point though. Bit cheeky to take the cash for what was likely sold as a ‘glamour friendly’ then sending the kids. I can understand not wanting to risk anyone, but if that’s the case then don’t agree to the game in the first place.

I personally think we should have used the game to try a defence for Wednesday. Injuries would be a risk, of course, but the reality is it would be unlikely, particularly in a friendly. Could even have given them 45 mins.
