The FA in England made upbeat noises yesterday after concluding a two-year TV rights deal with ITV for coverage of the FA Cup and England internationals, despite the £90m contract being a third less than the prevailing annual rate. This is the latest in a deflationary trend after the Football League in England secured a deal from BSkyB from next season at a rate 26% below the current deal.
TV money is still flooding into our nearest neighbours at a rate that would allow all Scottish clubs to pay their tax bills but the downward trend is welcome for those here trying to build and retain football squads. Although English football is awash with cash it is also heavily indebted with a compulsion to spend every penny earned. Downsizing, if necessary, will be a challenge.
The FA Premier League remains a durable TV property but you’ll find it harder to find analysts projecting income growth for the next deal, irrespective of the successful legal challenge to price fixing based on EU areas.
A weak pound has meant earnings from overseas rights have remained high compared to pre-crash times but with euro-area and other world economies so volatile neither exchange rates nor foreign demand can be regarded as stable. Economically speaking, English football has all the facets of a bubble, so far, one that just keeps on inflating…..

Sir Moonbeams taught him all he knew – how to bail out before it sinks, the lot.
Re: Development side from Spurs website.
John Bostock scored twice as our Spurs XI team toppled Celtic 4-1 in a training ground friendly on Tuesday.
All the goals were scored in an action-packed first half at Spurs Lodge and included two penalties as an experienced Spurs team overcame a young Celtic side.
Danny Rose, Seb Bassong, Vedran Corluka, Niko Kranjcar, Giovani dos Santos, Steven Pienaar and Tom Carroll were all in our starting line-up.
Cameron Lancaster opened the scoring from the penalty spot after being brought down himself in the box in the 18th minute.
That was swiftly followed by the second from Giovani six minutes later, he tapped in from close range after a great run and cross from Pienaar down the left.
Bostock came on for injured Lancaster in the 25th minute and was soon in the thick of the action.
Corluka, who played the first half on his return, floated in a cross from the right and substitute Bostock converted just six minutes after coming on.
Celtic pulled a goal back on the half-hour but it was soon 4-1 as Rose latched onto his own clearance from a corner and raced the length of the pitch, only to be upended in the area.
Bostock stepped up this time and made no mistake.
Giovani and Corluka were replaced by Alex Pritchard and Lee Angol at half-time, and Angol could have added his name to the scoresheet midway through a largely uneventful second half, only for his shot to fly just past the post after a neat ball in from the left from Rose.
The visiting team had a number of chances to close the deficit in the second half, but Alnwick made a string of fine saves, including a crucial double block on the edge on the box to keep the Celtic forwards at bay.

Your right,it was such a long wait I forgot.
However, I wonder if Lenny is still of the opinion he had previously, as Rogne was drafted in although Wilson was returning, plus we have now pulled in the Polish guy!!
Zbyszek:
Excellent as ever mate. Thanks for that. Very encouraging.
For insurance reasons Gerry Butler is not allowed to skydive, snowboard, ride a motorcycle of play in non-bounce games. Sadly therefore not an option for a run out at CH. As for Mo Bangura…… worth a shot at the centre of the sieve?
Loovens and Dan must be off in summer.
Does this spell the end for Zheng Zhi?..:(
That Spurs team was a few quids worth.

Just as he was finding a bit of form too!

You could be right there, young Thomas has been solid and Kelvin hasn’t set the heather on fire as yet, he probably needs time and has had a few injuries, coupled with a nervy game at the bigotdome.
In Lenny I trust.
Zheng Zhi is away at the Oriental Cup of Nations for the next 4 months.
Mmmmmmmm, so we now have an (almost international) centre half. I await Zbyzek’s info, and to watch him play over an extended period of time, before I will be happy with the new guy.
Remember that we used to have 2 experienced international centre halves in the sieve (Fr. le tamis, Sp. el tamiz, Ge. das Sieb, We. y gogr, Ne (total fitba) de zeef) in Mick and the Heid.
Fingers crossed that he is the real deal, let’s face it, Neil has had more correct than wrong to date.

I had heard that after the game against the darnel on Dec 28th when the centre stand was full of scouts to watch Jelavic, that the player being talked about afterwards in the lounges was in fact Thomas Rogne.
Ohhhhh Jeff
He hates the ref
And hates the huns.
BlantyreKev
You are correct, Roy Hodgson raved about him.
Upon the announcement of the opening of Rangers new London office.
” The ethos of Rangers will be at the core of everything we do “.
Surely their London office will either be at Chancery Lane or beside me here in the West End at Mason’s Arms Mews?
Failing that there are spaces,I am sure down at SE1 on Pope Street ( perhaps not ).
garcia lorca – Don’t think they can afford King William Street in the City. (thumbsup)
Give me few minutes. I will find Slask forum and will post what they say about Foyoot move (loss).
Tomorrow’s DR Ragers will sign a bigger Centre Half than Fojut.
The defeat today was to what could be described as a spurs first team. We fielded U19’s.

What’s the post code for the Scrubs?
BlantyreKev I wouldnt be in the least surprised as young Rogne is a very assured player and is likely only to get better.Celtic really should be praised for the number of quality young players they have picked up in the last couple of seasons.I am surprised that Celtic have turned down 6 Million for hooper but at the same time pleased as it shows a determination to win things and as long as he stays fit im sure his value will increase.H.H.
Bournesouprecipe
To be honest Gerard is never going to win an Oscar.
He ain’t ever gonnnae score a goal against Rangers either unless it is a Hollywood Celebs Celtic eleven versus a Rangers Hollywood Celebs errr 2 (Connery and Carlyle)
ASonof Dan
According to a spurs site – Danny Rose, Seb Bassong, Vedran Corluka, Niko Kranjcar, Giovani dos Santos, Steven Pienaar and Tom Carroll were all in the starting line-up. against a young Celtic side.
A couple of very experienced first team players in that spurs team.
