Uefa funding, haves and have nots

369

Uefa’s new funding distribution model, announced yesterday, is a bit of a mixed bag for Celtic.  Payments for performance in the Champions League increase, which is a nod to clubs from the big leagues, who always perform better.  This will be partly paid for by a reduction in distribution from the TV Pot, currently a significant source of our Champions League money.

On the plus side, income from qualification for the competition proper, which the Scottish Champions are guaranteed next season, will increase from £16.3m to £28.9m, offsetting loss of TV Pot money by a factor of eight.

Solidarity payments to clubs which do not participate in European competitions increase from 4% of the pot to 7%.  In reality, due to the revamped Champions League from next season, this will see payments to the likes of Motherwell and St Mirren more than double.

European football faces an existential problem around its diminishing competitive edge.  Clubs from Romania, Greece, Serbia and Scotland can no longer aspire to reach the Champions’ Final.  Speaking at the European Club Association conference, vice-chairman of the Association and Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell said, “Celtic as the champions in Scotland receive just over £3 million; if you are relegated from the EPL [English Premier League] you get £140 million. The main factor is the domestic competitions.”  The haves and have nots grow ever-farther apart.

The road ahead for Celtic is clear, remain in the Champions League proper and riches await.  Achieving this, requires us to earn coefficient points at a higher rate than we currently achieve, or hoping to benefit from the performance of other Scottish clubs.  If not, we take our chances through qualification.

An enormous leap in European performance is required.

  1. Paul 67,

    The stark reality.

The CL and European football is a must for us. Some would say, the only show in town.

    HH.

  2. An enormous leap is required. I’m sure everyone agrees with that assertion. Here’s a suggestion. Spend some of the tens of millions we have sitting idling in the bank. It can only help domestically and in europe.

“An enormous leap in European performance is required.”

If an enormous leap is what’s needed, we should plan for not making it. We appear to be in any event.

  4. We seem caught in some limbo between winning our local spat with the undead, grabbing the entrance fee loot but holding back on the next step. I don’t know what our plan in Europe.

We seem very pleased with our fiscal objective to store lots of this euro loot in the bank.

    1-0 could have been 4.

We played really well. Defended well broke at speed all the decisions were correct apart from no foul given when butland decks kyogo

Those having a recent go at Callum catch yourself on. He had great game.

Now to thems. I would not take a single player not one.

    Cantwell supremely over rated.

Beyond us scoring my highlight was them celebrating the car decision thinking a goal was awarded. So funny

  6. Maybe, just maybe,Celtic are planning for next seasons CL.The new contracts being given out,and offered to our best players, the signing of very promising players this window, all will have a season to improve, and bed in under Brendan.January window,a Keeper,a LB.Would complete the present squad, and a striker bought in the summer.Should give us a very strong squad for the new CL cash cow.

Maybe, just maybe,Celtic know better how to run the club better than rank amateurs with their opinions. How do you think they got the money in the bank in the first place?.

  8. Bhoy From The Boyne on

Spending money on better quality players will contribute if Celtic are to improve CL performances.

But it’s not the whole solution. Playing more CL games per season and getting the players used to being pressed higher against elite teams will eventually improve our CL performances and hence our co-efficient.

We need to be aiming for 10 CL games per season. Anything after that is a huge bonus.

  9. Many use the terms ‘Europe’ and ‘Champions League’ almost interchangeably. (Paul has not)

I think they are separate considerations and our place may not ultimately be at the top table.

    Money versus genuine participation.

  11. We absolutely have to set our standard above domestic success and set europe as our target or we’ll find ourselves being dragged down by the mediocrity of our main rival.

I hope we’ve a plan to develeope and compete in europe.

Looking forward to seeing how BR has us set up in the CL. Angeball was never going to work at that level so a rework is needed.

    Good article

A lot of water under the bridge since Celtic became the first ever cold climate country European Champions. Qualification for the CL was and is now paramount, how we do now that in the intervening years since Lisbon, where the game and goalposts have been moved, is too predictable.

Savour those Celtic Euro nights as ever, and hope every true Celt I know, will too.

Anyone who has followed me on line will know I’ve always been an advocate of increasing Solidarity payments and reducing payments to competing clubs by a small percentage that would make no difference to Celtic’ s chances of challenging the elite.

That the widening gap problem has been recognised by UEFA and a wider distribution makes it possible that Celtic make no sacrifice is even better.

A general point to come from this and FSR is that tackling SFA head on gets Celtic nowhere but persuading UEFA of cases for change backed by evidence of its need is the way to go even if it takes 10 friggen years to make it happen.

“Infinite patience produces immediate results” I might have mentioned before.

So we need to improve European performance to get the coefficient points to qualify directly.

Is the business model set up to this?

On finishing reading the article, Sir Alex Ferguson popped in to my head: “you win nothing with kids”.

We could easily replace “kids” with “projects”.

Fingers crossed a few of our new recruits can step up.

  18. Paul67 et al

For all the obvious disadvantages of being next door to the EPL, there are some positives to being Scottish Champions. If you are able and willing to exploit them.

Newcastle are in the CL for the first time in over twenty years. Aston Villa, former European Champions are in Europe for the first time in fourteen years, and still had to qualify. We have had the opportunity at least, to play in Europe every season this century. If somehow we could recreate the Fortress Parkhead mentality at Celtic Park, which dated in a way from the 1960s until relatively recently we could possibly challenge in this season’s group stage, and under the new format in 2024-25 if we win the SPL again this season.

A fully fit squad, CCV available for most of the games, a manager who has gained more Euro exprience down at Leicester, gives me some optimism for the campaign ahead.

So, in saying that Gene its all about what Dusty and the Merseybeat’s once said, “wishin and hopin and thinkin and prayin” as that’s all we can do so your wife will be added to my growin candle list at the vigil the morra night.

  21. Our club spending the bank money,in my opinion, would not significantly help us do better in Europe. We always need luck,in the draw for that spending to make any difference. There have been many examples of clubs trying to buy success.Apart from the club that ended up liquidated,we have had other examples of teams trying to spend and punch above their weight, even in Scotland.Dundee,Gretna,Hearts.In England,Stoke,Middleborough,Watford and a few more, out of buisness,or never recovered, and they were just trying to survive in the EPL.Forest spent around £ 600 million, and only escaped relegation on the last day.

Buying three players at £ 20 million, chickenfeed now, means wages of around,£60-70,000 per week ,which has a knock on effect for the existing players. Not a good effect.

Our £60 million would not go far in these days to make us a force in Europe.A good draw,a couple of good performances, like their Euro run, more chance of advancing.

We have done it before,Strachan,Lenny, without pawning the clubs valuables.

  24. Hello again all you young rebels.

Almost bedtime here in Oz, rained all day, so just had a wee wander

down to our local soccer club.

Season more or less finished now, so time to reflect, and how have we

    done ?

Well 5 junior teams won their leagues and two of them girls so not bad

So must be doing something right..right ?

But seniors not so much, just like professional football, money has taken

over, and very average players are now demanding some form of payment.

Whether it’s their fees paid, which amount to about $ 500 dollars a season

or in really good players a sum each game.

The result was we lost our best players to other clubs who have the cash

    to splash.

How we go forward without a big sugar daddy? I don’t know, but we are

inundated with parents desperate to get their kids playing the beautiful

game, especially after the great show the Matilda’s put on in the ladies

    World Cup.

Just letting you all know my meandering thoughts to you bhoys and ghirls

and before I go, any kid who joins our club will know the name of the

famous Celtic before the start of their first training session 🇮🇪💚

  25. Been away but looking back I have noticed questions being raised about Celtic responding to Var and referees issues. I have it on very good authority from within the club that after the Killie game concern was raised with the SFA about VAR on that occasion and that the club have continue to press for improvement in VAR and refereeing standards in general.
