Uefa funding, haves and have nots

369

Uefa’s new funding distribution model, announced yesterday, is a bit of a mixed bag for Celtic.  Payments for performance in the Champions League increase, which is a nod to clubs from the big leagues, who always perform better.  This will be partly paid for by a reduction in distribution from the TV Pot, currently a significant source of our Champions League money.

On the plus side, income from qualification for the competition proper, which the Scottish Champions are guaranteed next season, will increase from £16.3m to £28.9m, offsetting loss of TV Pot money by a factor of eight.

Solidarity payments to clubs which do not participate in European competitions increase from 4% of the pot to 7%.  In reality, due to the revamped Champions League from next season, this will see payments to the likes of Motherwell and St Mirren more than double.

European football faces an existential problem around its diminishing competitive edge.  Clubs from Romania, Greece, Serbia and Scotland can no longer aspire to reach the Champions’ Final.  Speaking at the European Club Association conference, vice-chairman of the Association and Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell said, “Celtic as the champions in Scotland receive just over £3 million; if you are relegated from the EPL [English Premier League] you get £140 million. The main factor is the domestic competitions.”  The haves and have nots grow ever-farther apart.

The road ahead for Celtic is clear, remain in the Champions League proper and riches await.  Achieving this, requires us to earn coefficient points at a higher rate than we currently achieve, or hoping to benefit from the performance of other Scottish clubs.  If not, we take our chances through qualification.

An enormous leap in European performance is required.

Livescore listed Kyogo in the starting lineup which is why I posted that he would start but he is in a long line of substitutes.

  2. Astonishing performance by the referee in England rugby game.

The TMO red cards an England player in tge fordt mintue. Soft decision. Really should not have been a red.

Then for the remainder of the match every single decision goes for England. Totally ignoring England constantly being offside. Compensating for the TMO mistake and some.

    Ridiculous.

We will be hearing about World Cup winners for the next 5 weeks at least as the draw they ahave gives them a virtual bye into the semi final.

Meanwhile the top 5 countries knock hell out each other in the other half of the draw.

  3. It really is now hilarious. The referee is taking it to another level. We will have 5 weeks of shit from the media . They might actually even win this. It’s like England have no one to play of any credibility until the semi final. Ireland and Scotland and South Africa would have 3 games of real tough competition before then.

    Absolute joke.

  4. Engurlund are playing in an all black strip.

Maybe the referees think they are New Zealand.

Dont see a French referee being pro England.

Silly agenda driven comments in my humble opinion.

    But hey ho.

    Agree about England

Quarter final team for me unless tournament in England

Aye, it’s mad how a home tournament can galvanise a team to do better. Support obviously counts, but I think due to the pressure and backing on every game in a home tournament, the players are drained by the time they reach the latter rounds.

A bit like Andy Murray at Wimbledon before he actually won it. He had to learn to block out the crowd and lose the temper tantrums before he was successful. Every game has the atmosphere of a final. Must be mentally draining for the players.

    Well, that’s one theory anyhoo.

Doubt England will win a World Cup in my lifetime. Maybe the Euros, but not just now.

Honestly I have never seen such a onesided performance by a referee. Not even in football.

The TMO gave a really soft one against England and from there it was astonishing.

The count was an incredible 12 penalties more to the team with a man less. Worst was the marginal decisions such as knock ons and even line out infringements.

Credit to England but I have never ever seen such one sided officiating. Whether it is bias jist cognitive dissonance I don’t know.

    Watch it AT! 😃👍

Surely that’s not correct that everyone checks out for International games?

Suppose I’ll just have to sit and play Football Managwr until everyone wakes up again. Doh!

Not Baresi but a very useful and experienced, monster-sized player.

IMO , there is no chance England will win this. France, Ireland South Africa, Scotland and New Zealand, even a less than impressive NZ, are, again IMO, all much better sides.

I think England won’t face any of them until the Semi Final – I have never seen a draw like it.

  15. Jinkysredstar

That’s exactly it. The draw is a disgrace. Countries ranked 1-5 all int he same part of the draw.

The draw gives them some really nice warm up games which are almost a bye into the semis.

They will play Fiji or Wales and then they will get either France or Ireland in the semis. Both France and Ireland will have played the top southern hemispheres teams prior to playing each other before playing England. Both will be battered. Then they will play a fresh England team for a place in the final.

Meanwhile SA and the All Blacks will play likely each other after playing Ireland Scotland and France already between them. The winners will probably play Australia and then possibly England in the final. Again they will be well battered before emerging to play England.

For me it’s almost 50/50 there England win it despite being ranked 8th in the world. Such is the advantage of their draw.

The usual English momentum and hype will build incessantly.

The sound of their racist ‘swing low’ dirge sweeping the stadia of France will echo for weeks to come sadly.
