Underestimating teams in August, win Walfrid hospitality tomorrow

923

You and I have enough recent experience to know teams we’ve never heard of, or know little about, cannot be underestimated when it comes to European football.  We should expect, and will get, a very difficult game tomorrow.

The good news is that Hapoel Beer Shiva have lost goals in three consecutive matches after a solid defensive run which saw them keep 8 clean sheets in 12 games.  But they scored four while conceding in two of those games, the only reversal coming at home to Ashdod in the League Cup last midweek.

They shut up shop away from home in their two earlier Champions League qualifying rounds at Sheriff in Moldova after a narrow 3-2 home win, they kept out Olympiakos before winning the return 1-0 in the last round.

Unlike in previous years, we are not facing a team midseason in the playoff round; Hapoel have had a few cup games but will not open their league season until Saturday.

Hospitality for 3 people at Celtic-Hapoel Beer Shiva at Walfrid Restaurant

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have given us three tickets for fantastic hospitality at the Walfrid Restaurant, before, during and after tomorrow’s night’s Champions League qualifier.  This is another money can’t buy opportunity for three people to watch Celtic in a hugely important game in sumptuous comfort.

Anyone can enter the competition, however, as this prize of so incredible, I’d like everyone who enters to donate a recommended £10 to the good work of the Celtic Foundation.

You can donate at this MyDonate page.

The Celtic Foundation work to improve Health, promote Equality, encourage Learning and tackle Poverty (H.E.L.P.) in Scotland, the rest of the UK and Ireland, and worldwide.  It’s your Foundation, you built and maintain its good work.

A few guidelines for the raffle:

Raffle closes at 21:00 BST TONIGHT, so there’s not a lot of time and I’m not expecting many entries.  You will not be entered into the competition if you donate or apply afterwards.

Enter with an email address you are going to check later tonight or early tomorrow, add a phone number, if you like.

You can enter two ways:

By making a recommended £10 donation to Celtic FC Foundation here.  Then email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with Walfrid in the subject line, to make sure I can get in touch with you.

Or

By emailing me the names of every Celtic shirt sponsor and official kit manufacturer.  Ever. To celticquicknews@gmail.com

One of the above will be pretty easy for most of us.  The other will be pretty difficult.  Do the easy one.

Great prize.  Only open for a few hours so there will be little competition.  Go for it!

Thank you, and thanks to Intelligent Car Leasing for supporting our fundraising efforts.

Suppose Barton needs to draw attention to himself in the media. He ain’t going to do it on the pitch

    ——–

    That’s exactly what it is.

Seems to be working, mind you.

Better if he just got completely ignored.

  2. Although I tend to disagree with a lot of MACJAY’s political posts I have to say when it comes to the day of a game he always seems to have the correct focus;the match itself.

Even from far away his excitement is almost tangible and it reminds me that i’m on here because of Celtic,no other reason.

Enjoy the game tonight ya daft ow Tory bassa. ;))

I posed a similar question last night.

I wasn’t aware at the time that Celtic supporters we being charged £49.50 for the Sevco game.

I am disgusted with this as your average Sevconian will take this as an endorsement that they are the same club.

It seems Celtic are content in the fact we’ve been cheated by the old club for years in return for the restarting of the OF gravy train.

    Totally hacked off.

Surprised there was no outpouring of grief at the passing of ex FIFA president and IOC member Joao Havelange…

    I would go for a 4-3-3

    With

    Gordon

    Lustig Toure O’Connell Tierney

    Brown Rogic McGregor

    Forrest Griffiths Sinclair

Controversial to not include Dembele. But bring him on in the second half and move to a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2.

    =========================

I think that’s the team that Rodgers will go for tonight. Long term I think’ll he’ll see a front 3 of Roberts, Dembele, Sinclair as his strongest line up, but for now the Griff deserves his spot. Dembele probably a better option away from home in Europe to hold the ball up and bring others into play so may switch for the return leg anyway.

If this mob are ultra defensive then I wonder if he may be tempted to switch to the 3 – 2 – 3 – 2 he used against Imps

    Gordon

    Lustig Toure Tierney

    Brown McGregor

    Forrest Rogic Sinclair

    Griffiths Dembele

Torontony (sometimes of this parish) just forwarded me an Interesting read from SFM …haven’t read back, so apologies if already posted.

I would hope he is wrong, but, it is hard to argue with most of it.

Not sure I agree with all of it (I dont think the OF model is best for Celtic), but I suspect that he is correct in arguing that it found favour with those who run our club.

  8. Over the last 15 years, outside games against minnows, our best bet for a goal is a set piece.

With that in mind, I would want Bitton in the team, so my team would be

    Gordon

Janko , Lustig, Kolo and KT

    Brown Bitton

    Forrest Sinclair

    Dembele , Griff

Had he been back sooner I would have included Erik the Dane, and whilst like O’Connell, experience is more important. Also Jankos pace on recovery tackles could be important

The question of where BR sees Griffiths in his plans is an interesting one. I hope, and think, that Griffiths is very much going to be BR’s leading striker this season. Beyond that? Who knows?

I don’t think Griffiths is a player in the BR mould, but he’s a top goalscorer, how can he not be in our team?

I’d definitely go with Rogic. They will defend deep and we will need somebody who can unpick the locks, especially with no Roberts.

Not sure about Forrest – with them defending deep he won’t be able to use his pace and I don’t think he has the nous to do what PR does.

TGM … no offence intended mate. FWIW, I tend to agree with most of what you say. You must be younger than me, though… I dont have the energy to keep arguing on here! :)

  16. I read earlier that we, the supporters, will be paying the fine for those who wave Palestinian flags in Celtic Park tonight. I hope to God it is only a fine. I fear we may face worse punishment. I have, however, no desire whatever to contribute to paying the fine for anyone who unashamedly harms Celtic. I hope the Club takes action against each and everyone of them to recoup any monies we lose through their selfishness.

Rogic on the right has a lot of merit, and probably as close to a like for like replacement for Paddy we have, what with his technical ability and ability to cut inside and cause havoc.

Maybe an option for later as we look to kill the tie:)

im hearing that celtic pricing structure for tonights game includes a 2% ticket surcharge to pay for any uefa fine caused by flying palestinian flags

in fact, celtic sent me my ticket wrapped in a palestinian flag in the envelope

(some of the above may or may not be true)

  20. traditionalist88 on

The other advantage of Rogic out on the right is inswinging crosses which their packed defence will probably find more difficult to defend than a cross from Forrest…

Considering Sviatchenko and Biton were doubts I can’t argue with that selection. Will be a big night for young McGregor in midfield.

We need to use the ball well. Keep play at a decent tempo without making careless passes.

  24. DAVIDOPOULOS

It’s a tough one. Not comparing the players, but before their death der hun used to drop Boyd for the big games, because his all round play wasn’t good enough. Boyd was a great finisher from 12 yards in when teams were camped in their box, but he couldn’t hold the ball, link up play, run the channels or get in behind.

Griffiths is a different player, he’s lethal from 25 yards in, he can run the channels and get in behind, but he gets muscled off the ball, his touch at times can be poor, and he rarely gives little lay offs or reverse passes to link up the play. I know he likes to play on the shoulder but he also needs to be reduce the amount of times he is caught needlessly offside. He is constantly improving, Ronny Deila made him a far better player than the one who walked through the door, but there are still things he has to work on. Dembele has plenty to work on as well, but he has the raw abilities, so the ceiling for his potential is perhaps greater.

I would just be very surprised if all 4 of Sinclair, Roberts, Dembele and Griffiths started any big European games. Roberts and Sinclair don’t project well as wide men in a flat 4-4-2, they would leave the midfield 2 very exposed. They look far more suited to a front 3. The midfield 3 we have been using hadn’t looked good until Motherwell, and I think as a result Rogic has forced his way into the team.

The good news is Rodgers is flexible and I’m sure he’ll rotate formations depending on who is fit and what the circumstances are. If he can add another midfielder, and get Bitton back to his 2014 / 2015 level, then I think the team starts to look quite formidable.

The quality of said new midfielder may depend upon Champions League monies, so far too nervous and excited about tonights game to be concerning myself with ticket prices for Scotland’s newest club(which will be in high demand and bring substantial policing costs), or people whose only contribution to the Palestinian cause is bringing a flag to a Celtic game against an Israeli team. Hapoel Beer Shiva are not Beitar Jerusalem.
