Victim blaming media misreport police, Kent “pushed” Brown and Lennon ethnicity

115

This week has been a rerun of the aftermath of the 2016 Scottish Cup Final, when Hibernian humiliated Newco, resulting in a media narrative against them being prepared and distributed to the masses.

The Herald yesterday ran the line “Police have consulted prosecutors about Scott Brown’s behaviour during Sunday’s Old Firm game.”  This bears no relation to what happened and lacks credibility to anyone who witnesses key events at Celtic Park on Sunday.

Police asked prosecutors to review three items:

1. The melee involving around 15 players at the end of the game.
2. Ryan Kent’s punch on Scott Brown.
3. Alfredo Morelos elbow on Scott Brown.

Watch the melee again.  What police officer in their right mind would look at 15 players grabbing, dragging each other to the ground and ripping clothes, as Scott Brown looked with his hands by his side, then limit comment to Scott for smiling at grown adults?

You can make your own mind up why the newspaper report contained no mention of Kent or Morelos assaults being reported by police, that information was not selected for you to read about.

Instead, the headline screamed, “Police consult prosecutors over Celtic captain Scott Brown’s ‘goading’ at Old Firm (sic.) match”.  Inaccurate, misleading and selective.

In the greatest act of mitigation in history, the same article asserts that Scott Brown was “pushed to the ground by Ryan Kent”.  Pushed.  To.  The.  Ground.  Pushed!  Honestly!

Everyone knows this is factually inaccurate.  Scott Brown was not pushed by Ryan Kent.  Scott Brown was punched by Ryan Kent.  This is as clear a case of victim blaming as I have read.  Deliberately misreport the assault while running a headline blaming the victim for goading.

The actual police quote in the article read, “The actions of the players involved are for the relevant sporting authorities to address.”  This happened and three players will serve suspensions.  No Celtic player had a case to answer.

Monday’s edition of the same newspaper took a more sinister tone, suggesting Celtic’s ideal managerial candidate “may as well have described Neil Lennon right down to his ginger hair.”

What does “ginger hair” mean in this context if not Neil’s Irish Catholic ethnicity?

Be clear: Celtic could not care less about the ethnicity of any of their staff.  Celtic fans come from all walks of life across Scotland and beyond.  It is not a club supported exclusively by one community; its success is a consequence of welcoming all.  We even have some who once ‘walked’ in July as season ticket holders.

In the years after Rangers liquidation, these pages were full of comments hoping that we never play Newco, not for the football, which we can enjoy, but because of the metaphoric rubbish that is left on our doorstep.

They have a business model which their chairman made clear is dependent on stopping Celtic.  Failure in this respect threatens their viability and this makes Celtic and our players vulnerable when they punch, elbow or lash out through media briefings.

Scott Brown was not pushed he was punched.  He was not reported by police, a group of at least 15 players were reported, with only two individuals named, neither of whom was Scott.  This attempt to intimidate him will fail.

He will lead us to nine-in-a-row next season, but unfortunately, you are going to read more of the same, as the media briefings from Ibrox become ever shriller.

In a change to sentencing tariffs within the Scottish Legal system, a new criminal offence has been added to the group of serious offences against the person, which attract the longest custodial sentences.

Joining convictions for Murder, Culpable Homicide, and Assault as the highest tariff sentencing crimes, “Grinning Sarcastically” will now also be dealt with in the High Courts.

I am perfectly satisfied that both actions justified a Red.

That`s got a ring about it and deserves commendation as `punch` and `shove` don`t give much scope for one of your classics.

  3. JIMTHETIM at10:30 (previous post) Apologies for not getting back sooner. Anaerobic digesters are huge behemoths which swallow up about 50 lorry loads of straw everyday, forcing the price of straw up for the (relatively) small users like us and causing a paucity of straw generally available. Luckily, we have a supplier who likes donkeys and keeps a bit back for us – otherwise we would have to buy it by the lorry load.

MURDOCHAULDANDHAY (Trusting you are keeping well,S) & PARKHEADCUMSALFORD – Thank you for thinking about us and voting for us.

Now off to pick up grandson from karate class, before heading off home to watch The Celts on telly.

3 more sleeps till his first Celtic Match v. Livi – though I don’t think he’s sleeping much!

That sums it up but even under that Law, Broonie coul still plead innocent and could claim ` smiling happily ` rather than `Grinning sarcastically`. He could certainly provide extenuating circumstances for his response.

  5. Tonight we have on paper a run of the mill game against the bottom club that’s probably destined for the Championship. However, as Jimmy Ruffin once said “I’ve passed this way before” and this one is fraught with danger.

This s a team fighting for survival, a side that we have already dropped 2 points to at the same venue one turgid Friday night 12 days after disposing of sevco in another game this season we underachieved although looking back we had a manager then that was in the cream puff.

It’s not the first time we’ve been in this position; we had been due to meet Ayr United at home at hunden on the Saturday as Parkheid was closed because of complete refurbishment of the Stand.

The previous Saturday we had tied 1-1 up at the Pen, thanks tae big Billy doing a big Kris and making a goal line clearance fae Arthur “Bumper” Graham; so although we were 3 points behind the sheep, 2 points for a win then, we had 2 games in hand, deidco were 15 points behind the leaders, the title was now ours tae lose.

Incidentally, this was a very good sheep side which contained along with Arthur , Stevie Murray, Martin Buchan and his brother George who also briefly appeared with him at Old Trafford, Davie Robb, and cousins jim forrest, alex willoughby as well as harpers a barrel on the bench.

After continuous heavy rain the game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the national stadium, with the game off the sheep lost at Brockville which meant we needed 3 points from their last three games to tie Wullie Maley’s amazing 71 year old record and so off we went tae Love Street on the Tuesday night.

In a fast paced game twice we came back from a goal down tae equalise, the star man that late spring night was a youngster called Ally MacLeod, no not the mouthpiece that went tae the Argentine with his tartan army, but a young striker who scored 4 goals for the Buddies at hades in a LC game the following season when the Buddies were in the 2nd Division, they also lost tae another 2nd Division side Stenhousemuir at the same venue in the LC.

Ally scored 2 goals that night and after a short spell at Southampton came back up and starred for the Hibbees. Unfortunately it was not enough for St Mirren and they were relegated, as Jock said after the game “We didn’t like doing it. We don’t like making any club suffer but we had to. It was them or us. They played well sure but if they had played as well all season, they wouldn’t be where they are today.”

Meanwhile we still had to pick up another 2 points which we did 2 nights later against the Honest Men 2-0 at hunden, I was there that dreich night with EDB’s young brother.

Fast forward to a game I spoke about yesterday, another 1-0 win at hades, we were on course for another title win with only 4 games, or 12 points, to go.

Now we all look through our fingers at Black Sunday but that’s not where the problem lay, that was IMHO the following Saturday at Parkheid where we contrived tae lose 1-3 tae a youthful Hibbees side who with the likes of the Heid, Derek Riordan and a young Scott Brown played us aff the park, also in that side was a player that widnae cross the half way line 3 weeks later as he was on a bossie tae the opposition. Their manager shouldnae have been given hoose room at Parkheid after that game.

The Leith star man that day was the scorer of the 3rd goal who chipped David Marshall and then ran toward his own support and did the “Broonie”, yes our now captain.

In our side that fateful day were tough guys Jackie Mac who once did a kent on hhhhhately, Bobo, Lenny, Thommo and Big Bad John and yet not one of them ran tae remonstrate the Fife born youngster, we have more class than that bunch of trailer trash over the other side of the Clyde.

In fact in his final game against us for Hibs he scored the equalizer and then celebrated with gusto when wee hun sproule scored an injury time winner. You’ll no read that in the smsm.

Finally, a visit tae Tulloch Stadium where we played our game in hand 1 point behind the almost breest up deidco, they would be 9 month later thanks tae the clueless chauncey, somehow or other the team managed by our current acting one put on their worst display of the season and although it ended 2-3 only the “Wall” saved our pride that night.

So not trying tae be a doom and gloomer but lets not drop the proverbial ball as there’s still a lot tae play for.

  6. SCANIEL all the best pal like me you are animal lover so I l love you to bits I wont say anymore in case someone comes on accusing me of taking up blog space.hh.

  7. Rock Tree Bhoy on

A punch that would not have looked out of place in a boxing ring – and they’ve appealed it! What a brass neck, the 2 weeks should be doubled to 4 weeks for having the absolute cheek to appeal it just so he could play against Hearts. I’d love to ask Stevie G what his grounds are for the appeal – think he’d struggle with that one. The man is rattled – you could see that in his ‘jump over 4 cages to get into a lions den’ interview. Good.

  8. Good evening CQN from a wind and rain swept Garngad

Guys, my wee brother received his last rites yesterday morning from a lovely priest From St Paul’s, Whiteinch a Father McGowan, Thomas is still fighting and I would appreciate any prayers to our Lord for whichever path he chooses for Thomas.

As I write this, I do so through tears of sadness as Thomas was only 42 on Saturday, far too young. He never made too many good choices in life but he never hurt anyone, other than family members, but that’s family’s for you. As I say far too young and he had so many dreams and aspirations as a bhoy growing up.?

On top of that my wee dog has to get put down on Friday.

To say it’s not been a good start to the week is an understatement.

Anyway I know he would want me to say, come on the hoops tonight.

    Hail Hail and thanks

This league win is going to be the sweetest of the modern era. Stevie g is a great spinner and story manager but is too thick to see that by doing that the quality on the park is limited.

  10. The closer Celtic get to 10 in a row the more rabid the BBC, and others become, utterly blatant coverage of Sevco game tonight because second place in the new first, with plaudits never mind criticism of Morelos, and Kent.

*said that a while back only it was based on the mitb and honest mistakes, now we all know our manager was not fully committed, although he should have been, so it will be all the sweeter when it comes. If we do miss out on the treble treble I’m blaming him and his feart tae stay.

  14. David66

That is so sad, I’ll say a prayer for your brother, far too young to be at this point

  15. Prayers being said David66, 42 dearie me I’ve got one around that age and 2 that are older, God knows what Mrs TT would do if anything was to happen to them.

  16. truth-twisting journalists are the leeches on the game, more than ever they try to run the game, now that the SFA is defunct. However the bookies and the brewers are the deep state when it comes to fair play. My Da was a Rangers man from Govan but he hated to see a kid kicking a ball about in the street with his team’s strip advertising the name of a beer on the front. Scotland once had a strong temperance movement, not that I approve of it at all, but it galvanised a section of society to achieve enough sobriety to hold down a job. many of them used sport on this journey . And then there’s the bookies. Seemingly there are 14 bookies on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow, a European record, are we able to call them to tssk occadionally?

  17. To call them to task occasionally. Hope it’s a good game tonight. St Mirren where I come fae so that’s a bit special for me. Hail Hail

  18. Tonight’s confirmed line up v St Mirren

Bain; Lustig, Simunovic, Ajer, Izaguirre; Brown, Ntcham, McGregor, Forrest, Weah, Burke,

Subs: De Vries, Toljan, Rogic, Benkovic, Sinclair, Edouard, Christie

  19. David66, My sincere sympathies , very sad story. All ye can do is stay close as a family & see these sad days through. Time does heal, I lost my only brother last October, still miss him of course but it does get easier with the passage of time,

  20. Bain; Lustig, Simunovic, Ajer, Izaguirre; Brown, Nthcam, McGregor; Forrest, Weah, Burke

Subs: De Vries, Toljan, Benkovic, Sinclair, Rogic, Christie, Edouard

  21. Wow Official team totally different from leaked team, only similarity Burke & Weah starting up front.

  22. David 66.

Stay close to the family you have. They will help bear the pain

Down in a cold Manchester, quick bite to eat and then back to flat to watch the Bhoys. Don’t need the 3 points but will be well pissed off if we didn’t take them home. HH

  23. Looks a good strong team, and subs bench, let’s hope there is no injury’s and it will allow some of our attacking options a run out from the bench, in other words be able to utilise the full squad tonight to its fullest potential.

Again guys thanks, it is so humbling being able to share some thoughts and receive the good wishes of a great community. God bless you all.

My very best wishes to you and your family at this toughest of times.

Try hard to remember the good times and be sure, better times are ahead.

  25. A bit disappointed that Eddie’s only on the bench. Admittedly for selfish reasons as I bet him to be the top league scorer this season (currently 3 behind Morelos who is obviously now missing 4 games). And I suppose that he will only come on if we are strugling then hopefully that won’t come to pass!

  26. David 66. Sorry to hear the sad news about your brother. Said a prayer to the Blessed Mother asking her to intercede for him before the Lord. Will remember him and you at Mass tomorrow.
