Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

CQN Golf Annual Charity Open

This year’s CQN Open is set for Friday 29 June at the first class Aberdour Golf Club once again.  It is a day of sport, entertainment, Celtic chat and is always good fun.

After the golf, we head up the road to the CQN friendly Woodside Hotel for our evening meal. We’ve the usual round up of all things Celtic by Paul67, and our very funny after dinner speaker is Willie Allan. Then musical entertainment from Scoogz, who you may have seen if you’ve been to Celtic Park entertainment nights. Plus all the usual prizes and charity fundraising, for the Petrov Foundation this year. Cost is £40 night only and £80 all day including golf. Please contact cqnopen2018@outlook.com if you’d like to attend this fun event.

  2. English commentator has just said.at start of 2nd half.” England are playing football worthy of Barcelona” !

Peaking too early – Terry Butcher was on this morning saying as much about Belgium and that slow starters win the cup – wonder what he thinks now

  4. I posted earlier that if Harry Kane doesn’t score at least TWO Goals v Panama…Id eat my hat ?

My Hat …or Celtic bunnet is now safe. LOL

I cashed out at 4-0 England.

I have also took Kane 3 or more at 17/2 ?….Southgate might take him off in that heat, and put on a Sub BEFORE he scores 3 ?

I hope he stays on, as i also took him at 16/1 fopr Top goalscorer…he might score 4 or 5 penalities in this game alone ? LOL

Sitting in Wetherspoons in Leeds station waiting for the Manchester airport train after a fantastic weekend with my daughter for her 13th birthday, sitting as far away from the TV and the Panama slaughter as I can get.

First time in 7 years I am actually looking forward to returning to Oslo, to get away from this triumphalist, baying, threatening pish.

  6. England playing like Barca ????? …….FFS they are playing against Panama Cube Chubes

At least I have won some money aff them.

  7. England look good.

This must be the World Cup that gives the best chance for a fresh winner. Mexico, Belgium and England bring prime examples.

Loftus Cheek is my kinda player.

I disagree with MON are too lightweight up front to go far.

We can’t and shouldn’t blame the English team or people for their media’s OTT pash. After all, would we want to be held culpable for S(evco)TV, the Record or Shortbread in their similar fawning of deidco?

Watching this crap in an Irish bar….the only one in Kalamaki

1 guy in a Scotland top, young couple in Ireland tops and another couple in silence. Best place for me.

Wife left her beer and off cruising round the tourist tat shops.

How did such canon fodder get into a world cup finals?

  9. England to win World Cup, Wimbledon, The St Leger, Irish Derby, The British Open Golf, and next years Grand National ?

Their media and Pundits are all Chumps.

  10. England have mixed up the short and long game well. Set pieces are also impressive. Obviously, Panama are not providing the stiffest of challenges. England look vulnerable (with and without the ball) on their left side, Maguire looking like the right footed central defender playing out of position that he is.

It’s mexico that MON are too lightweight btw.

I think they defend like a swarm of midges and counter like wee hornets. Me likely.

And an inspired GIRFUY to trump. Which is nice!

  15. So the latest to snub Celtic is an Arsenal wondered goalkeeper.

If there was a European league for snubbing we would win it by some distance.

    Sevco have never been snubbed.

When the last England goal went in, and the din subsided, a broad Scottish voice filled the pub with: Next goal’s the winner!

Am off to find him and buy him a beer.

  20. only 1-1 this half and the engerlund goal was a lucky deflection – i’m feeling better already

Rain, thunder etc forecast the next 3 days though. Suits me…can go touring.

    The Shamrock is the bar.

Dena , Donegal look like Fermanagh’s unfortunate record will continue.

My grandad was from Pettigo who met my granny , who was from Cushendun, in Glasgow.

When my grandad came over before 1914. He stayed up a close in the Garngad. My mum told me, her dad told her , Jimmy McGrory’s family stayed in the close.

Talking of Jimmy McGrory , the Green Brigade anti racism tournament at The James McGrory ground of St Roch’e was a great success. I know the Green Brigade annoy some in our support but this tournament is something they, our support and the club should be so proud of .
