Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

CQN Golf Annual Charity Open

This year’s CQN Open is set for Friday 29 June at the first class Aberdour Golf Club once again.  It is a day of sport, entertainment, Celtic chat and is always good fun.

After the golf, we head up the road to the CQN friendly Woodside Hotel for our evening meal. We’ve the usual round up of all things Celtic by Paul67, and our very funny after dinner speaker is Willie Allan. Then musical entertainment from Scoogz, who you may have seen if you’ve been to Celtic Park entertainment nights. Plus all the usual prizes and charity fundraising, for the Petrov Foundation this year. Cost is £40 night only and £80 all day including golf. Please contact cqnopen2018@outlook.com if you’d like to attend this fun event.

Got a feeling Colombia might edge this tonight, no doubting Lewandowski’s talent but think his teammates are average (but what do I know)

As far Engurlund I don’t mind this crop of players and the commentators ?? Like up here I zone out and don’t listen to their shoite :-) and probably like every other country doing well in the tourney their commentators maybe just the same, us Scots just have to settle for the Stevie Gee-string revolution

Schoolbhoy error with the cash out (that I wasn’t taking yesterday) offered £400 for the Yankee and £150 for ma quid accie when Senegal went 2-1 up, took the £150 and let the Yankee run, whit a clown should have been the other way about…. but as you say glass defo half full, loved even getting to the final game of the line…. plus MrsGFTB happy with money going back into the bank account for a change :-)

Well done on the cash out, that’s 150 quid more than you would have got if you had let it run. Obviously still a treble and 3 dbls in your yankee.

A guy in the work put on at 50/1 no nil nil games in group stages.

I thought the odds should have been much higher 48 games, anyway hopefully I will be eating humble pie and congratulating him, if there is a goal tonight he’s two thirds of the way there.

one of my mates has started betting no-goal scorer (always better than 0-0 in case of own goals) his reasoning is there must be one or two due…. the logic of a gambler = 0 !

But I have now found myself thinking the same :-)

There has been a game already that was 1.0 where no goalscorer paid out.

Morocco v Iran. O.g. in stoppage time.

BT replayed a clear foul on a Celtic player (broonie, Ithink) this year (against mini bassas) and he refused to condemn it.

I forgot about Iran v Morocco game although that seems ages ago :-) ma mate textd me on Friday saying there must be a 0-0 soon…. maybe the knockout stages although these days it seems every defence is rubbish so maybe us Celtic fans should be too hard on our own defence :-)

BT ‘s coverage of Scottish football was very enjoyable especially Derek Rae commentating. Then we got a double hit, Derek left BT with fat Sally joining as a pundit at the start of last season.

Sally really is useless but as he is so media friendly in the eyes the meda big wigs down the road , he gets jobs he has no qualification for.

I couldnt believe when he was given a co commentary gig on radio 5 a few years ago. It was bad enough they used to get their views on Scottish football from , Bill Lickie, Roddy Forsyth and Nevin.

The sleekits performances on “question of sport” were far better than on any fitba Park, whether we like it or not he is media savvy and the mainstream love him…. gutted that ma wee maw never saw him whispering in Neil’s ear, she had the time of day for “Coisty” but loved our Neil (although Tommy Burns was her favourite) then she would have saw the sleekits true colours…. although glass being half full he played his part in the original Hun downfall (PMGB) and definitely took the Sevs for plenty as well as being a shoite manager :-)

Before the 1986 world cup there was a bit of a furore about the Denmark team taking along wives , girlfriends and weans.

Here there was a discussion about whether Sally shoud be in the Scotland squad or not

The Evening Times had a hotline asking for Scotland fans’ opinions if Sally should be in the world cup squad or not.

Someone phoned in saying the only way fatso McCoist would get to Mexico was as one of the Danish players’ wife or girlfriend.
