Watching Argentina took me back to Fir Park, 2005

1218

Teams can lose their competitive edge quickly.  The Celtic team of 2003-04 were imperious: 25 consecutive league wins, they beat every team in the country, home and away, on the bounce.  Larsson left, of course, but the following season’s problems were deeper than that.

Watching Argentina last night took me straight back to Fir Park, 2005.  A feted team, packed with reputation and talent, simply failed to compete.  Unable to match the industry of Iceland, or the ability of Croatia, they look like they want to return to the safety of club football immediately after the group stages.

Having great players is not enough if they are not sufficiently hungry, and keeping millionaires hungry for the SPFL is a challenge we will forever encounter.  On this front, we must do what we can.  Packed 60,000 seater stadiums help.  I’m sure open-top bus parades help even more.  These things create a sense of occasion and achievement, which is difficult to find elsewhere.

  1. Mahe the Madman on

    Howdy Bhoys,

Missed me ? Been well but very busy though in a good way so I dont mind that much.

Have only been back lurking for a week or so and like most I am also enjoying the feast of football on display.

I thought I would lay out my thoughts on the best ever for anyone thats interested..if not sorry for the long post .

Anyway if you read hope you enjoy and I cant promise a reply although Ill scroll through at some stage. Cheers.

I enjoy the blog debating the greatest of all time. Theres many older posters who have a different opinion to the younger among us.

Our esteemed colleague 16 Roads has posted clearly that Diego is the greatest ever.

Sir, until these last few years I agreed with you, and thought surely there will never be greater.

He mesmerised me did Diego . I had never ever seen anyone possess that much control over the football and that control could be exerted by many different body parts , not just the usual suspects.

Although his career ended on a sour note he has since made me laugh many times,, with antics such as shooting reporters gathered outside his house .

Why his comments and eye covering antics only this past week has made me laugh.

His club record is impressive enough and leading Napoli to the title twice is the highlight. To score 38 in 58 games for Barca is not too shabby either plus theres 3 cups in his first season there as well as having the added distinction of being the first Barca player to be applauded by arch rival Real fans according to wiki

We all seen him demolish Engerland single handedly on the way to lifting the World Cup,, deservedly imo for the amount of skill he displayed during the competition.

He did not dominate any league for any long amount of time but did indeed lift himself and his teammates to heroic feats,,feats that seal their place in history. 86 is the standout moment . Its also worth pointing out , in my book anyway , that the quality of the AC Milan side that Napoli beat to the titles was frightening with names such as Gullit , Rijkaard , Baresi , Maldini , Van Basten.

I would sum him up by saying the most gifted player of his generation and possibly ever but was at war with himself and the game for long stretches.

Was he groundbreaking and did he change the game ? I would posit yes as he showed that an average team can be dragged by the scruff of the neck to ultimate glory if they are pliable and if the person doing that dragging has the skill and drive to back it up.

Pele was the best of his generation , and is rightly feted for sure..

In my book to claim the greatest ever ones talents would need to be spread across a few arenas so as the challenge might be viewed in more context. This he did just about I guess we might say.

The great man won league titles in his homeland ( 6 ) with a couple of Copa Libertadores thrown in for good measure.

Although that domestic title haul might be matched by say Ryan Giggs his crowning achievement is lifting the World Cup 3 times.

This alone bears a hell of a lot of weight.

He became a national treasure and his tally of over a thousand goals is incredible , simply stunning.

But I would ask of Pele and indeed all these pretenders to the throne how did he affect the game ? Did he change the game ? Was he groundbreaking or a trendsetter ? What made him different to some other great players ?

When I watch his games and highlights I see a player who was outstanding at a lot of different things and that has allowed him to be in this conversation.

Amazing at dribbling,,goalscoring,,endurance,,vision on the field,,and had the drive to match the skill. Ive probably missed something .

He seems to me the ultimate all rounder but on the attack side of things.

I would sum him up by saying he has stellar international pedigree and had a good club career.

That he deserves to be in this conversation there should be little doubt in anyones mind.

Did he leave a legacy or change the game ?

I say yes,,he has set the bar for the title of greatest goalscorer ever at 1000 goals. Thats how many you need now to get into the conversation and thats down to him. Its an incredible number and he really does deserve a hell of a lot of credit for that incredible return.

Messi,,this blog kisses his arse you know. He can do no wrong on these pages hey. Well for most that is.

If I take all emotion out of it and look at Messi up to this point here is what I see,,,

The most naturally gifted player of this generation. But with that being said, he should have achieved more by now especially on the international stage if he were to be considered the greatest ever.

Right now hes being eclipsed by his rival ,, big time .

He might be winning titles domestically right now but hes not been producing it on the biggest stage in Europe where he plies his trade. Hes never produced it on the World stage either . Hes won the champs league 4 times . Ronaldo has 4 medals also. Many players of the big two Spanish clubs do and will probably leave the game with more than 4 . Messi has won more leagues yes but CR7 has won other big league titles not just in the one country plus he has delivered international silverware so surely he has surpassed Lionel ?

The International manager has admitted to tailoring his team due to Messi’s demands. Yet they suck.

The weight of expectation seems to weigh too heavy many a time on his small shoulders.

Your biggest rival just done the incredible in 3 big cups in a row.

The honest to God reason hes in this conversation at all is because he has magic in that left peg of his . Real , sublime , shake your head at times magic . BUT, Ive seen it before.

Diego dribbled like that and scored goals like that before Messi was even thought of.

And Diego produced it on other stages than the domestic Spanish scene . Bigger stages.

So Messi certainly isnt doing anything thats not been done before. Or is nothing we havent seen the likes of before.

So to analyse his career to date, he has been the focal point of a mega club which has recently dominated domestically is his highlight. He basically has one tick for his la liga career and one tick for getting 4 winners medals in Europe.

He could go on to become the greatest ever but it would surprise me.

If I were to sum him up hes the latest genius,,magical to watch but doesnt have the most impressive trophy haul or the drive that would be needed to back up any serious claim about being the best ever.

    Which leads to Cristiano.

Hes now 33 , and has publicly announced his plan to play until 41 .

We are now witnessing Cr mark 3 ,, the third phase of his career.

You wont need me to give the details. But here are some facts.

Delivered the goods bigtime in the English top flight ,, the biggest stages in Europe ( Champions League and European Championships ) and as you read this is lighting up the world stage.

Another version of Cristiano will arrive also if he is to play until 41 logic would suggest. That same logic would also suggest he will succeed in making the transition to whatever type of player and style that he deems necessary to transition to.. I foresee a low mobility quarterbacking role at a second tier club of his choice. It could be argued that a second tier club signing CR7 would automatically become a first tier club but thats for another day.

So here we are 15 or 16 years or so later watching the same player not only win but shine at the very top level,, still. And consistently. Hes been winning things for 15 years now and theres another half of that again roughly to come.

Wow. And then to the bigger arguments,,has he changed the game,,has he stood out from other greats,,was he a trendsetter etc?

Would be hard not to answer yes to all. Have we seen any other player perfect 3 different roles ? Would you bet against him perfecting 4 positions ?

What does he do different than others? Well weve never seen stepovers like that before. Those stepovers that were first laughed at are now a serious weapon in his arsenal . His own club team mate fell for it to give away a pen in his opening game, and he trains with him almost daily. Its blink of an eye stuff and he has invented and perfected the art of his own style of step overs.

Then his free kicks. He has perfected those. Remember there was this thing about kick the valve a certain way and the ball would react a bit different. He figured that out, and perfected the art.

No one could hit a free kick like it at the time . All the professionals were trying it and no one could. Why just last week his last gasp equaliser was sublime magic under huge pressure,,a pressure he seems to thrive under and indeed promote in order to drive himself on.

Changing the game? Well no one has ever ripped up the EPL from the left wing quite like him.

Right now he is Portugals mobile and floating playmaker and when he returns to Madrid one would imagine he will return to his almost classic centre forward position.

Trendsetting,, hes redefining the meaning of the word dedicated. The others were or in Lionels case seem not to be anywhere near as driven as him. If they were we probably wouldnt be having this conversation. Hes not the most gifted of the 4 , I would say Diego was .

But I do believe the root of his success is his great physique. I have told my friends that if he chose to be a swimmer or tennis player he would probably be the best or one of in the world in that field for he is a supreme athlete and when that is matched with the right temperament greatness is possible.

When you consider the quality of the current Champions League later stages its probably higher than international football . It probably is the hardest tournament around.

When you throw in teams with bottomless pockets attracting the best coaches and players,, the fact theres two legs rather than the one in the World Cup ,, the travelling involved is greater as is the variety of playing surface and maybe the ref standard,,and hes dominating it like no one before in history has ever done.

Peles 3 world cups are amazing yes,,,but they are Brazil and just look at the quality of some of those players around him at times especially that 70 team,,they probably woulda won it without him that year many would agree I believe.

If we are being generous and counting the brazilian league title as a major trophy then Pele lifted 11 major trophies in his time.

Diego didnt have the equivalent club career and didnt dominate any league for any length of time. He delivered on the biggest stage with such a bang that its put him in the bracket of greatest ever but if you stack up the number of the beautiful games biggest prizes won by both then even the great Maradona gets left behind with 5 which includes an Argentinian title and a UEFA cup.

Messi’s trophies might number about the same as CR7’s but surely producing on the world stage now as we are seeing plus leading his country to success in the Euro’s places him above the wee man if their club trophy haul is roughly equal. Especially considering he is older and not as naturally gifted as his rival. Throw in a few unique patented moves of his own for a bonus point. And lets not forget Real specifically target the big cup over the league . Who could blame them. Its more prestigious and brings in more cash. Surely Barca would rather the big cup than another league ? You cant say another league was this seasons ultimate goal for Leo or Barca. CR7 though seems to have hit his target for the season.

We are witnessing this phenom become clearly the worlds greatest player after 15 or 16 years of top flight football,,a time when most are far from prime. Yet he will go on. And on.

More records will be broken by the guy Ive no doubt. He looks like he could easily go on until 41 yet Messi looks like he would love to bail out at 31.

So to me at least he has overtaken the previous pretenders to the throne.

Diego burned soo bright ,,,soo beautifully bright ,,but not as clear or for as long.

Pele enjoyed himself among friends and was stellar for the most part.

Messi is an imitation of Diego that hasnt burned as bright .

Cristiano is now the best ever as things stand and anything else is just the icing on his cake.

He is dominating the biggest games on the biggest stages for longer and more consistently than anyone before him. Taking home the biggest prizes in serious numbers.

No one has shone on every stage. Until now.

Watch him while you can bhoys,,he might just be the greatest of all time indeed.

Hope youre all well. Mahe the Madman

Hard to argue with that. And an enjoyable read.

I see now why we’ve not yet handed out the no7 jersey! Mon Peter, get him signed!

  3. Good morning good ghuys and ghirls from a gloriously sunny Garngad

This going to gym carry on is meant to get easier, but I have been Kerry packered lately.

Anyway, I think we still need a few signings in and hopefuly Brendan knows who he wants and the club are working on it.

DD I was talking to an old pal of yours on Saturday, Tosh.

    Hail Hail

  4. Good morning, friends from a beautiful, sun drenched East Kilbride. Back to work, hey-ho!

  5. Celtic 2nd Strips.

Some Posters were commenting on the best ever Celtic (Away and/or 2nd Strip) earlier.

the Celts had ( IMHO), a brilliant 2nd Strip around the very late 1960’S ( Maybe early 1970’s ?), although they scarcely played in it, and for some reason it didn’t last too long ?

For decades Ive racked my pea brain trying to think of who they may have wore this strip against, and then about two weeks ago, I came across highlights of a European Cup game at Celtic Park and I can’t quite remember the opposition but it MAY have been either Boavista or Sporting Lisbon ( I think ?), and because the opposition played in Green and White, The Celtic wore this away/2nd Strip at Paradise that night, and we won well scoring 4 or 5 goals.

This Celtic strip was completely WHITE, with a Round Neck. On the Neck and Sleeve Cuffs, and at the Top of the White Socks, were 3 or 4 Thin GREEN Hoops. IMO is was a Cracking strip.

Wee Jinky played that night, that much I do now remember, but my Smart TV is being repaired today ( hopefully), so I’ll try and find it again. I think the highlights were on Youtube ?

In saying that, Ill now try and find it on my computer ?

The Jersey imo was a Belter.

  6. If only the Poles had scored one goal last night, and I would have had a nice wee turn again at the Bookies as I had 3-1 Columbia…ah well, you can’t win them all ? LOL

IMHO, If England are going to face either Columbia or Japan, they will be in a game. I hope it’s Colombia, as iI can see the English getting the better of Japan at corners etc in the air ?

    Then again…I know nuffing ?

  7. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    MAHETHEMADMAN

Welcome back, mate. Wee Fionnuala been taking it outa ye lately?

As you know,my bestie’s first granddaughter was born roughly the same time. Him and his wife got her a lovely wee Celtic outfit, and I bought her another one at Glasgow Airport. It should fit her about the same time we do the eightsome reel.

There are two huge problems with the arguments about The Greatest of all Time. One is that they are subjective, the other is that in every GOAT survey/post/op-ed,it’s always the attacking players.

Brian Clough and Peter Taylor signed Peter Shilton. That is why-in their opinion-they won the league and two European Cups.

Ranieri signed a 32yo for about £20m,everyone laughed. Every team should have a player who can play The Makalele Role.

    Germany,for one.

Baresi, wow. Muller at club AND international level scoring near as dammit a goal a game. At top level, not a Santos exhibition team.

But THREE World Cups? That puts the argument in favour of Pele.

Cruyff won three European Cups, but not a World Cup. Otherwise,he’d be up there,IMO. And he dragged a country up by the bootstraps and then rebuilt FC Barcelona.

    Puskas? Di Stefano?

See why I mean about subjective? How do you judge success, the greatest? Was Cruyff better than Pele for his achievements with a country with less than 10% of the population of Brazil?

Was Makalele better than both for giving Chelsea a foundation for success?

You might as well ask if Jimmy Johnstone was better than Bobby Murdoch, because it’s apples and oranges.

So here’s my long-standing Greatest Player of all Time.

    Franz Beckenbauer.

  8. Ive had a look on youtube.

On Wednedsay 2nd October 1968, European Cup 1st round, 2nd Leg. Celtic Park. Stand Ticket cost “20/-“, which was £1 in auld money.

Celtic 4 v St Etienne – 0. ( Gemmell pen. Craig, Chalmers, 4th goal ?). It obviously was not Boavista orS Lisbon.

Celtic wore that Mostly All White Strip that night, and we were feckin brilliant, especially wee jJnky.

The atmosphere was described as “ELECTRIC”. The info that I read regarding that White Strip is that Celtic had it made SPECIALLY for that night ?

I don’t know if that is true, maybe it is, it’s just difficult to imagine the Cel;tic Board shelling out money for a new Strip that was to be only wore ONCE ? Again, maybe it was locked away after that match, and would have been used again if the occasion called for in in the near future ( Further clash of colours etc ?)

Celtic had lost 0-2 in France in the 1st leg.

St Etiennes Captain ( Robert Herbin), afterwards described the Celtic support as being like ” HOWLING BANSHEES” !.

Celtic then played Red Star Belgrade in the next round…and we know what happened to them !

    HH

  9. As a Bhoy in 1967, apart from having the Hoops, I also had The ALL GREEN 2nd Strip…a Belter. this was the one WITHOUT ANY White neck/cuffs…just 100% Green.

here’s a wee quetsion for you older Celts, in 1970 we played and beat Leeds Utd in the European Cup at Elland Road. celtic wore the Hoops that night…..what colour were the SOCKS that Celtic wore that night ?

It’s an easy question for us auld yins.

As a very wise man once said…..” Yer only Baldy ONCE” !

  10. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Big Jimmy, welcome back. Your posts are always an enjoyable read.

With regard to away strips we have worn in the fifty years I have going to our games, the Umbro lime green strip we wore at Love Street in 1986 , is my favourite. I also liked the umbro black and jade striped Umbro strip in the 92/93 season plus green and black striped Nike strip in the 06/07 season. I have liked some of our green and gold away strips over tie as well.

  11. Word of The Day

    Purvey (pəˈveɪ)

    verb

    1. to sell or provide (commodities, esp foodstuffs) on a large scale

    2. to publish or make available (lies, scandal, etc)

    noun (ˈpɜːvɪ)

    3. Scot the food and drink laid on at a wedding reception, etc

Word Origin and History for purvey

    v.

late 13c., from Anglo-French porveire, purveire and directly from Old French porveoir “to provide, prepare, arrange” (Modern French pourvoir), from Latin providere “make ready” (see provide, which now usually replaces it). Related: Purveyed; purveying.

    KTF

  12. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Big Jimmy, red socks but under the floodlights they looked orange.

  13. ?

Purvey was a word that dominated my childhood.

    ‘Who’s doing the purvey?’

My mum was forever baking for something.

    HH ??

  14. DALLAS,

You may well be right mate, but Ive never heard that “explanation” before that you have offered up about “Red” looking like Orange ?

My belief was that the Socks were Orange, but again I wasn’t at the game, and only watched on TV.

The explanation that was given for the “Red or Orange” socks was that Celtic would wear White socks usually and they would clash with Leeds Strip/Socks. Celtic hadn’t packed an alternative set of socks, and Leeds gave us THEIR away socks to wear that night ?

As I say, you may well be correct ?

    HH

  15. At the start of my Speech at my last wedding ( Celtic Club 1999), I started off by asking all the guests ” Did you all enjoy the wee Purvey” ?

Afterwards, several older friends/guests commented on me using the description ” Purvey”, and said it was good to here it being used again.

    HH

  16. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Big Jimmy, i’m probably havering but I read an article years ago where Jock or one of our players said the socks looked orange under the lights.

What matters was we beat the ‘team of the century’ home and away in the final before the final.

  17. Dubaibhoy-Ur they still deid? on

    Mahe,

That’s a very well written piece, but as BMCUW points out all of the potential GOATs you discuss have relied upon their own individual ability being better than all others – with the exception of Ronaldo who has relied on his athleticism, timing and speed.

Of those Ronaldo will probably have the longest impact in that he’s had the Tiger Woods effect of making a significant amount of fellow pros realise that going to the gym is actually important.

However the one guy who single-handedly changed football and in my opinion is probably the greatest ever when you look at the stats is Franz Beckenbauer.

    5 Bundesligas

    3 NASL’s

    3 EC’s

1CWC (against the Huns, which gets a bonus point)

    1WC (player)

    1WC (manager)

    1 Euros

Not only that, in the WC’s that he played in and didn’t win he was 2nd + 3rd, and also had a runners-up when Germany lost on penalties to Czechoslovakia.

Beckenbauer invented the role of the Libero and was probably the first player to start defining team tactics and formations properly. This defined the modern era and was adopted by Baresi’s great AC Milan and Italy sides.

I have to admit though, I preferred Gunter Netzer to Beckenbauer, but the stats speak for themselves.

  18. My favourite player of all time ( NON Celt)….was PELE !

So many greats also like Cruyff, Berkamp, Van Basten, Bobby Charlton and many many more…..not forgetting Mario Kempes of Argentina !

Yes, I am aware that Bobby Chalton was a Celt for one match. the story goes that Bobby Chalton claimed after that testimonial ( Liverpool player ?), that now having played alongside BOBBY LENNOX, wee Buzzbomb would never be out of his team ?

I don’t know if thats true either.

    I know nuffin !

    HH

  19. In that great AC Milan team of the late 1980’s/early 1990’s, there was two players who I just didn’t rate too highly IMHO.

One was Baresi the sweeper, and the other was Rudd Guillt.

I always felt that Baresi was one of those guys who would BLAME everyone else if they lost a goal, when clearly HE was the one at fault…..reminds me of John Greig, Amarusso, and so many other “Great” Hun Captains…it’s NEVER THEIR Fault ! CHUMPS…every wan of them.

I know many will disgaree with em, but it’s just how I saw guys like Baresi and Guilltt. Baresi was very much a “Risk Taker”, another reason why I no likey him. Big franz was superb, during one game at the World Cup in 1966 he played some of the match with his arm in a SLING !

    Just my opinion.

    HH

  20. Fav players /

Gerson, Rivelino Zico, Tostao, The Chain smoking Doctor also of Brazil Socrates…all FAB, Rivera of Italy 1970, and another guy who played against Celtic for ? He was a Blonde haired, Chain Smoking Midfielder Robert Prosekski ( ?) perhaps he was Croatian ?

  21. Mahe

A good read and it produced a good reply from BMCUW about why it will be a never-ending argument.

In the end, we are likely to be heavily influenced by “our era”- the time where you caught the football “disease” and were enchained and enchanted by it.

I find it difficult to put McStay, Moravcik and Larsson into the same bracket as Gemmell, Murdoch, Johnstone, Lennox and Dalglish because they did their stuff when I was young and deeply impressionable. And, bhoy, did they make an impression. Older Celts were very unwilling to place the Lions in the same category as Patsy Gallagher and Jimmy McGrory, even after 1967.

That is why I thought you were a little diminishing to Pele in feeling that his total goals were his crowning achievement- they really were not the thing that impressed. Pele took your breath away by his dribbling ability, his body swerves, his supernatural ability to leap and hover and head a ball with power. He was the youngest player to play in a WC final (only 200 days older than the youngest player ever in the WC final stage) and scored 2 goals in that final at that age. He started the 62 WC finals on fire before injury robbed him of his chance to play his star part in that winning Brazil team. In 66, he was kicked off the park in the most brutal way by Portugal and Bulgaria but he was still the first to score in 3 successive WC finals. And, in 1970 he produced the performances which inspired us all. Yes, it was a team of all the talents but, apart from Jair’s scoring run, it was Pele who defined that team and the heights it reached. He shot from the half way line, he dummied the keeper, he leaped to produce a world class save from England’s keeper, and he made the “blind” pass for Carlos Alberto’s wonder 4th goal.

Those memories are his legacy for me. He will always be the best player of my era.

First time I saw Gunther Netzer,I was 8yo. Destroying England 3-0 single-handedly,or so it seemed.

I’d been so used to our own superstars by then, but Gunther just brought a new WOW factor to things. Despite the fact I’d seen Kenny Dalglish scoring his six goals a few months before, was mad about George Connelly and David Hay as well as the stalwarts of the 60s.

George should have been OUR Beckenbauer. Sad,how things turn out.

In fact,I don’t think GN was in the 1974 World Cup winning squad for Germany. Only two years later. Happens…

  23. The night Celtic played Leeds away, the players were using portacabins to get changed. Some sort of redevelopment was taking place.

Bobby Murdoch was stripped and went to the toilet

Review came in. Noticed the white socks and told him “ you won’t be wearing those”

He was the one who complained ( Revie)

Hence the change of socks. I thought they were yellow actually but my memory not the best.

The Revie /Murdoch thing I’m sure about though. It was Bobby himself who told me!

    You never rated Franco Baresi?!

I’m astounded of forehead tbh! Never, ever heard anyone say that.

    :-)

Mind you my own personal favourite in that role was the ‘Fife Beckenbauer’, the magnificent George Connelly. Ruud Krol of Ajax and Holland was another favourite.

Hope yer well and that you get a few winners today!

Baresi was the outstanding defender anywhere from about mid-80s to mid-90s. Still winning trophies in his late 30s.

I could be wrong, but I really don’t think he ever broke sweat. Of course,I’ve always reckoned that if you break sweat, you’re in the wrong job,but sauntering through 90 minutes?

And he was only a wee bloke anaw, not the most obvious central defender.

  26. Bhhoys and Ghirls…I didn’t say that Baresi was the worst defender etc, maybe because he WAS Prone to blaming others very often, is the real reason why I never really took to him, as I have always hated Guys like that.

I NEVER blamed others on a fitba pitch for MY mistakes…..I just never made ANY ? LOL

As for not breaking sewat…I get that,… but then again maybe I wouldn’t have broken sweat either with Pauolo Maldini alongside me ?

funny how NONE of you so far, have defended Rudd Guiltt ?

Was it Robert Probestzii the Croat midfielder that I’m trying to remember, played for Dynamo Zagreb maybe ? the Chain Smoker…GENIUS !

PELE for me every day of the week. I have posted about this before so apologises,, leave aside his Blind pass in the 1970 Final for the super 4th Goal, look at some of his headers ….AGAINST Englands Banks, and Brazils 1st Goal in that 1970 Final….His heading ability was sheer TEXTBOOK….Get above the ball, Hover for 15 minutes, then pick your spot and head it any corner you wish…SIMPLES !

for taht 1st Brazil Goal he was under pressure from a Classy Italian Defender, going backwards etc…and STILL banged it in with those fantastic neck muscles. For me that was the best Goal of that Final…fine margins and opinions.

As been posted earlier, the rough and illegal foul play Pele had to put up with, along with “The tackle from the Back” being Legal, my God….Your Neymars and Ronaldos wouldn’t have lasted two minutes !

Pele also had the fantastic strength and ability to ride heavy tackles…he had to back then.

i wish he was my Da, and teach me when I was young ? LOL

Eight of the team in that photo, and I’d expect most of us to recognise them all.

Although first I knew that Jim Brogan played instead of John Clark-though I knew the eleven in the final. I was never Jim’s biggest fan,but that may have been skewed by him playing mainly at left-back,which wasn’t his role.

(The other three just casually trip off the tongue,I suppose)

  29. Buying a Round ?

a wee trick that I would often do many years ago in Bars with my mates was this,

    1st mate “Jimmy, what u having ?”

Me ” a pint of Horlicks”,

2nd mate soon after, ” Jimmy, what you having ” ?

    Me…” A pint of Horlicks Please”>

And so it went on……When it came to MY ROUND….I was FAST ASLEEP…Simples.

The only time you’ve ever broken sweat in a pub is when you try to beat OLDTIM67 to the bar.

Same as the rest of us,need the guid trainers on when he’s around!!!

Giving you all a rest for a bit, heading up to the hospital to see my mate. You can thank him later…
