We are Celtic, ambition

1392

On Thursday I wrote Brendan Rodgers ‘will be a remarkable signing’.  One day after the event, it feels very remarkable.  Some found it so remarkable they have attempted a smile for the first time since Artmedia took the lead.  I’ve even spoken to Newco fans who were engaged by the appointment.  The aphorism, a rising tide lifts all boats, feels apt.

Some weeks ago I heard Peter Lawwell talk about the difficulty of landing a top tier manager in our current environment, however, he finished with a positive “But we are Celtic”.  People want to come here; managers, players, even tourists.  For all the Scottish game’s limits, we are Celtic, let’s not forget.

We’ve used some of that cachet to bring people to the game.  There will be more cameras, more reporters, more international media, more TV viewers and many more glutes on seats next season.  This will reflect on all.

Our media rights are worth more today than they were a week ago.  Consider for a moment how Dafabet and Magners view yesterday’s news?  For all they knew when they signed their shirt deals, we could have had Owen Coyle in charge next season, unless his auntie told them otherwise [an old CQN in-joke].

I’m pleased to hear so many comments that this is a sign of ambition, although ambition is always more nuanced than it appears.  Ambition every year is to win the league and qualify for the Champions League, that’s always the plan, whether it happens, or if it’s only half achieved.  Hopefully the ambition is loaded with a little authority this summer.

Sannabhoy asked me to pass on these comments on behalf of the Kano Foundation to the CQN community:

“To round the season off the Kano Foundation had a visit from Almore to present us with a donation from the Dublin 1916 CQN gathering on Sunday for the sum of £580.

“As you know, this event, to commemorate the Easter rising of 1916, was organised by CQNers Almore and ClogherCelt, and featured 30 CQN members among the 70 scots who travelled over to join the 120 locals at the festivities.  A brilliant time was had by all (just to rub it in to the absentees).

“Brian Ainslie, trustee, is pictured here receiving the cheque from Almore and Delaney’s Dunky.
Kano cheque
“On behalf of The Kano Foundation it gives us great pride and pleasure to accept this fantastic donation.  We appreciate the numerous good causes that are out there and to be beneficiaries of this, and the historically significant events it commemorates, is humbling and makes the efforts of the patrons, ambassadors, volunteers and trustees worthwhile.

“To Martin Connor and Alan Curran, who organised it, we’d just like to say, on behalf of the almost 5000 kids we have taken to Celtic Park, thank you very much.  Without support like yours we couldn’t continue to do this. Hail Hail.

“On that note, I’m away for a kip until next season – I’ll need it – we can take 2000 kids next year . HELP!!”

What a stunning community you are.  Well done.

Nevin has always been a knob end. Keevins has turned into one. Both bitter, twisted anti-Celtic

Nevin perhaps because he was released by Celtic Boys Club at eleven years of age.

I’m looking forward to the losing team being punished for the flare at their supporters’ end in the first half

  3. A sobering thought for followers in blue.

If they cannot beat a team with 3 players who did not make Celtic first team regulars, what chance of being drubbed regularly next season by those who are?

  4. Thindimebhoy on

Strangely our recent loss to them is less painful tonight now that we know present and past Celtic players played a huge part in ending Hibs long wait for the Scottish Cup

Hibs done serious damage to their ambitions today the focus will now be on the pitch invasion and not Kings bank book……….. for a while.

Sevco trying to control the narrative. Now claiming medical attention required on some of their players.

    Who believes them?

    —————————-

Said for a while there needs to be a great effort to get our media into the mainstream.

We should have thousands of bloggers, papers, magazines, radio and TV stations blasting out our message to counteract bollocks like this.

It is the only way (outside of the west if scotland) our voice will be heard.

    I read this today

    Who owns the UK media?

What does it mean to have a ‘free’ media when the nation’s TV channels, news outlets, radio stations, search engines and social media platforms are owned by a handful of giant corporations?

What does it mean to have ‘independent media’ when many of our most influential media organisations are controlled by individuals and Boards that are so closely connected with vested interests?

This animation and the accompanying report show that just three companies dominate 71% of the national newspaper market – a market that may be shrinking but is still crucial when it comes to setting the agenda for the rest of the news media. When online readers are included, just five companies dominate some 80% of market share.

In the area of local news, five giant conglomerates account for 80% of all titles while the 50-plus publishers have less than 20% of the remaining titles. We are facing an increasing number of news deserts given the fact that 36 million UK citizens – some 57% of the total population – do not have a local daily paper that is able to dedicate itself to matters of concern to their community. And where there is still a local press presence, some 85% of local government areas are faced with a monopoly or duopoly supply of local outlets.

Sky, effectively controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox empire, is by far the UK’s biggest broadcaster and continues to dominate the pay TV landscape. ITV is making huge profits on the back of its format sales and faces fewer and fewer obligations to serve domestic audiences. Meanwhile, Channel 5 is already owned by a US giant, Viacom International, and there are constant rumours that the government is keen to sell off Channel 4 to the highest bidder.

Two companies have nearly 40% of all commercial local analogue radio licences and control two-thirds of all commercial digital stations. Only 14% of non-BBC stations are now independently owned while radio news is provided either by the BBC or by Sky.

Is the internet any different to this? UK search is overwhelmingly dominated by Google while the most popular apps like Instagram and WhatsApp are owned by Facebook, itself by far the most popular social media site.

The BBC remains a powerful presence in broadcasting and online but its budget has been severely cut by the last two licence fee deals, its independence has been undermined, and it is increasingly being told by government to be mindful of its impact on the wider commercial market.

We believe that concentration within news and information markets in particular has reached endemic levels in the UK and that we urgently need effective remedies.

This kind of concentration creates conditions in which wealthy individuals and organisations can amass huge political and economic power and distort the media landscape to suit their interests and personal views. Urgent reform is needed in order both to address high levels of concentration in particular media markets and to protect against further concentration in others. We hope that this report will provide data and arguments that will be useful to groups and individuals who want to see a far more pluralistic media structure in which a genuine diversity of views, voices and opinions are aired.

It was a decent game for 2 championship teams.

Wonder if rankers warchest will get wiped out for the flares and pitch invasions that the SFA will shoorly fine them for……

    —————————————

    Indeed.

The zombie histrionics over the pitch invasion are laughable, particularly as you say – the zombies were on the park as well.

    All much ado about nothing.

Stokes finish for Hibs first was sublime, also the zombie second goal was a cracker to be fair.

Regards all the accusations of violence by hibs fans I never saw anything violent on tv.

So my thoughts are if Neil Lennon’s tynecastle assailant got a not proven verdict for assault live on tv. Then the courts won’t have to be troubled by any of this pish they are spewing out at the moment.

I am a supperter of the SNP. Have never hid it but I do not agree with the OBAFA, never have.

The SNP are between a rock and a hard place on this. There are no intelligent people who want bigotry to exist in Scotland but this act does not do the job.

Young men do not deserve to have their lives ruined because of a subjective enforcement of the law.

I still am an SNPsupporter, I am voting remain in the referendum (because I have a vote and live in the EU) but people need to be honest about what goes on.

Scottish cup final, good. English cup final, crap. Now off to watch the German one!

  17. Must admit I couldn’t be happier then if Celtic won the Cup. This will hurt them twice as much as their “win” against Celtic now counts for nothing.

Re pitch invasion as a poster said earlier if anybody was assaulted there will be video evidence and the perpetrators will be rightly dealt with.

The vast majority who ran on the pitch were simply celebrating, there may have been a few Neds who did something wrong if so they will get their desserts.

However it should be a 2 way thing, Huns sang sectarian songs and invaded pitch as well, Hope Hibs make a Statement to that effect.

Such a shame their manager could not bring it on himself to show respect to the winning team.

  20. Snake. Your politics are your own. But the SNP are trying to paint anyone against the obfac as being pro sectarian. It’s pathetic.

Scotland will now desperately attack hibs because of course it can’t be the Huns fault.

The SNP are the attack dogs of the rise of nationalist facism. Pretending to be socialist but criminalising it’s underclass.

I walked into local and was met with huns on seven screens. Any night I want to watch Celtic in Europe “sorry but Liverpool, Man U/City, Chelsea etc are playing” today wall to wall huns.
