What price Dundee game in US?

459

What price an SPFL game against Celtic in America? £2m? More? You can’t blame Dundee for being enterprising but I can’t see this initiative happening.

Celtic are the Great Gravy Train of Scottish football. We defy the status of our league to reach European Nirvana, which enriches us but also pays a healthy dividend to our supportive (cough) domestic competitors. The Caravan of Celtic arrives once or twice a year at each location, bringing paying fans and TV cameras. Therein lies the business model of many Scottish football clubs.

This is fair enough, but there are limits beyond which it’s inappropriate to spread the Gravy.

Don’t think I’m being sentimental here. Dundee can play their home games wherever they like as far as I’m concerned. They can move them to the US, in fact, if they convince the residents of Dingwall to do likewise, I’d have no problem with the ideal. Just so long as it’s consistent with a significant growth strategy for Celtic. The odd £1m here or there isn’t worth it for us otherwise.

First bit I doubt very much that any agreement in place. Who knows how far this young lad will or will not come on? And if he does turn out, and there is every chance he will, to be the next Jimmy Johnston then why would club put all it’s eggs in one basket with regards restricting potential returns to just what Man City might offer. This will just be chat amongst parents of team mates from Park Villa. My brothers bhoy played in same team as the lad. I’ll ask him what hearsay he’s heard. Won’t confirm either way obviously as it’s just rumour and unsubstantiated rumour at that.

He has plumped for England. Why would you want to play with Scotland?

Good Morning, Good Morning, Good Morning

As Gay Byrne used to say.

I see discussion of the fabulous Kilkelly Ireland from that old roaster ACGR and others.

I first came across the song when my old man returned from the US of A sometime in the late 70’s and brought back an LP featuring Danny Doyle. Two tracks on the record stood out – The fabulous Christmas in the Trenches and Kilkelly.

The song has a fascinating history having been inspired by a series of letters discovered in the attic of a house in Washington DC.

Personally, I have often thought that most versions are song slightly too slow and do not reflect the fact that each verse (each letter) starts full of positive or forceful information but then reverts to the complete longing of a father for his departed son.

In those days, emigration really meant emigration and when someone set off for the new world it was very likely that they would never see those they left behind again. Clearly “son John” sent money, photographs and whatnot home regularly (ish) but the song yearns for him or indeed his family to physcally return to Ireland – which he never does.

Further, the last verse is open to great interpretation. Here, the writer is no longer the longing father but John’s brother Michael who has been out to the US but has returned home with money and has bought land and built a house.

In his letter, Michael makes it plain that despite the loving attention of sister Bridget and her kids, and Michael’s being present when the old man passed away, it was still John who he called for at the end.

Is there a hint of bitterness in there? More than a hint of the fact that the lost lamb is the one who is always treasured most in the mind?

And the last line is a cracker — full of anger, regret, love, longing, disappointment and yet hope. It is a plea to John just to come home to visit as “we’d all love to see you again” – and yet you are left never knowing if he did or didn’t.

The song fascinated me in many ways because it was an accurate historical record of the lives of real people.

I later discovered that the school teacher mentioned (Pat McNamara) was a very interesting character who was far more than a local teacher.

In those days, many rural Irish were illiterate and so the schoolteacher would offer a service of writing letters to loved ones all over the world with the writer virtually dictating what was to be said. Clearly, here the father couldn’t read or write but son John, thanks to Mr McNamara no doubt, could.

McNamara was a very real man and kept a journal of all that he did and so it became a great source of information for historians about what life was like and who came and who went from that part of Ireland.

A great article on the song and Pat McNamara can be found here:

I had a look at the DR today will buying breakfast. They actually have a guide to the Hun’s friendly with Leipzip; location; transport; food and drink etc

You would think it’s some major European trip they are doing, the DR lives in a bubble…..

  16. OK since we are bored by the winter break I have decided to select a Best of the Rest SPFL selection for the first half of this season.

Based on what I’ve seen of the rest of the teams at CP or on TV:-

Goalkeepers:- Last year Scott Bain of Dundee was the outstanding prospect but he seems to have levelled off this year. Some veterans like Jamie McDonald are playing well and Foderingham had a good game against Celtic but the two best I have seen are Zander Clark at St. Johnstone and Jack Hamilton at Hearts. As the latter has the better all round game and is younger, he gets the decision.

RB:- Marcus Fraser at Ross runs all day and is genuine but seems to lack an extra edge to raise his game above good to outstanding. The outstanding RB of value is Hearts’ recent crock Calum Paterson. My main hesitation here is I don’t fancy him as a RB, maybe as a right wing back because he is a very good attacker but too often culpable for conceding goals. Still, if the next best is Tavernier, who can’t defend or Logan, who is merely tidy, Paterson begins to look like Pele. The Hearts man is the choice as a player to fill, rather than perform, the RB slot.

CBs- Rangers best back this year has been the carthorse Clint Hill and, to be honest, Scotland is not blessed with good CBs. Aberdeen play the bombscare Taylor and the journeyman Considine, leaving Mark Reynolds on the subs bench. Liam Lindsay is a good scorer for Thistle but not a great defender yet. For me, the best of a bad bunch are Rossi at Hearts and Barton at Thistle.

LBs- Both Callum Booth and Kevin Holt have been effective attacking LWBs but none are great defenders. This is another shortage position in Scotland and the best of this bad lot is probably The Grass at Ibrox.

Def Mids- Again a shortage position. Ryan Jack is ordinary and functional with no USP. His colleague, Kenny McLean is a scorer and free kick specialist and a better bet. Andy Halliday is a hard working unspectacular but steady player and young Ryan Edwards at Thistle seems to have some promise. Massimo Donati does well here but gets messed about moving into a CB slot at times. I’ll pick McLean and Edwards.

Attacking Mids- We actually have a few options here. The young Hamilton lads Ali Crawford & Danny Redmond continue to show that they are being coached well. At Aberdeen, Johnny Hayes is a major counter-attacking threat and young Maddison, on loan from Norwich looks skilled but lightweight. The veteran Kenny Miller at Rangers has to be respected for his workrate and the young boy McKay played very well against us but is still a slightly less reliable version of Gary Mackay-Steven. The best player, in the front support 3 role this year has been Danny Swanson at St. Johnstone who has been in a rich consistent vein of form. My choice, a bit unbalanced, would be Maddison, Swanson and Hayes.

Forwards- There are plenty of prolific scorers in Scotland who are big immobile target men. Liam Boyce at Ross County, Adam Rooney at the dons, and “Gies your chips or I’ll batter you” Waghorn at Ibrox, who got knocked out of the team by a submarine impersonator. Souleymane Coulibaly at Killie has scored several great goals this year but is a Marc-Antoine Fortune type scorer of great goals, rather than a great goal scorer. The best footballing scorer up front this season has been Louis Moult who has a bit more than goals to his game- he is my choice.

So, in a 4:2:3:1 line up, I go with :-

    Hamilton (Hearts)

Paterson (Hearts) Rossi (Hearts) Barton (Thistle) & Wallace (Sevco)

    Edwards (Thistle) McLean (Dons)

Maddison (Dons) Swanson (St. J) Hayes (Dons)

    Moult (Well)

Subs- Clark (St. J) Lindsay (Thistle) Halliday (Sevco) Redmond (Hamilton) and Miller (Sevco)

Of that lot, I’d suggest only Hamilton, Paterson and Hayes have a long-odds chance of establishing as squad members with Celtic. Most are just hard working unspectacular Scottish pros.

I’m starting work now- what do you think?
