When the Champions League shop window is a bit too clear

586

We’re getting to that time of the transfer window when clubs with money and who are either underperforming, or who have silverware in sight, often make desperate decisions.

It is a remarkable statement of the times that three Celtic first team players have attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, at valuations that a year ago would appear eye-watering. It’s just as remarkable that we’ve not locked the suitors in a room until they emptied their wallets.

Seven months into the season, five credible Champions League performances and 27 peerless games in domestic football and our 34-year-old goalkeeper attracts a higher bid than would be achievable by any player at a Scottish club other than Celtic.

Not that I’m agreeing with all this ‘What we have we hold’ business. Every playing asset has a price, to borrow a regular CQN phrase from 2005.

I hear Peter Lawwell was spotted earlier buying tickets for tonight’s showing of T2 Trainspotting for himself, Brendan, Craig, Erik and Moussa. “Unreal” wage offers can turn a player’s head.  Better get them to the movies with their phones switched off.

    Agreed.

At one point, yesterday, the press reported a Celtic spokesperson as saying Chelsea had not made any official bid for Moussa.

Unlike Craig were Chelsea dis make a bid but were refused permission to speak to him.

I guess we will never know the truth, we are all speculating, unless Big Peachy Lawwell does post on here. I wonder what his moniker would be!!!

  12. Some people just can’t bear the thought that Celtic won’t entertain interest in a big asset. Other non Celtic supporters are also raging. Sad.

  13. Morning

Good luck to Mrs Tallybhoy and her knees.

Still got the lurgi ( check spelling Ed) but having made it to work I am damn sure I am going to miss the game tonight.

Bit pessimistic about the game- partly because I know we have to lose sometime, partly because the Dons seem to have found a bit of form and partly because we are likely to be short of some of our best players – not having both Armstrong and Rogic is more worrying than the lack of a conventional forward. It is also likely to be a bigger test of the ‘New Dedryk’ than the previous matches. Should be a good game though- not almost knowing we will win beforehand is no bad thing

Also a bit underwhelmed by the transfer window. One guy in – who seems to be unlikely to play for a while yet- and some fringe players out on loan. We do not even seem to have any agreements to sign anyone in the next window in place either. Of course not losing any of the players who were the subject of bids- real or imagined- is good but I would have preferred a couple more players in and perhaps some of the fringe players out on permanent deals

Have a good day and mon the Hoops

    :-))

  20. Natknow

Well I was disappointed we did not sign another striker in addition to as opposed of Widdy Dembele. Leigh G’s fitness has been patchy all season, Aitchison is (possibly too) young and Ciftci is not in the picture which leaves us poorly covered in that area

    Jimbo67

  21. Disappointed we did not build from a position of strength with champions league qualifiers in mind to meet the expectations as described by Brendan.

I think he used words/phrases: disappointed; six months; club had, etc…

So yip. Disappointed we did not match managers expectations. But in the words of Talking Heads “Same as it ever was”. So my expectations were matched.

I listened to our manager after game on Saturday and his statement with regards club and 6 months to prepaired spoke volumes. He may have followed that up with a mildly appeasing qualification but he publicly made a point to the board that he ain’t going to take their shit.

    That I am happy about.

Better than just quiting and leaving is with PL giving us Ronnie!

MWD and others – where in that interview did Brendan say that we’d had six months to get players in? What I heard was him saying that we’d try to get one or two in but it’s not always down to ourselves – am I missing something, or are you referring to a different interview?
