When the Champions League shop window is a bit too clear

586

We’re getting to that time of the transfer window when clubs with money and who are either underperforming, or who have silverware in sight, often make desperate decisions.

It is a remarkable statement of the times that three Celtic first team players have attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, at valuations that a year ago would appear eye-watering. It’s just as remarkable that we’ve not locked the suitors in a room until they emptied their wallets.

Seven months into the season, five credible Champions League performances and 27 peerless games in domestic football and our 34-year-old goalkeeper attracts a higher bid than would be achievable by any player at a Scottish club other than Celtic.

Not that I’m agreeing with all this ‘What we have we hold’ business. Every playing asset has a price, to borrow a regular CQN phrase from 2005.

I hear Peter Lawwell was spotted earlier buying tickets for tonight’s showing of T2 Trainspotting for himself, Brendan, Craig, Erik and Moussa. “Unreal” wage offers can turn a player’s head.  Better get them to the movies with their phones switched off.

  2. The fee might be much greater but the master plan remains the same, to have Moussa Dembele here for the CL qualifiers in the same way as we did with Virgil Van Dyk. Even in the unlikely event that Moussa suddenly stops scoring goals, his stock can only rise between now and the summer by which time Celtic should have safely qualified.

The issues are ‘stockpiling money’ and or ‘every pound will be reinvested in the playing staff’.

How many players can you, should you buy, when you sit a record number of points ahead of your biggest rivals and can even afford to lend them players?

Fortunes can be squandered and we should be planning ‘the Dembele money’ wisely, to attract a superior class of player to Celtic. This includes total transfer fee and the type of salary paid.

We did it with our manager and we should do it with playing staff, – pay them ‘the Dembele incoming cash’ buy better, and pay them top dollar to keep them here.

The transfer window was OK. Look at where we are today in comparison to last January! Miles ahead IMHO.

I’m very confident on tonights game. The sheep aren’t even close to us. OK, no Dembele of Griffiths but we still have the leagues (joint) top scorer in the team. Paddy Roberts did a great job in the centre on Saturday; we have Aitchison as an alternative.

I see the same 11 as Sunday unless Gamboa is carrying an injury; this gives Boyata and Bitton the opportunity to show that their improved form is real against the 2nd best team in the country. It will be tight if we are at 60% and they are at 100%; I don’t see that happening.

There’s a fantastic feel-good factor at the club; everyone is playing for their place. If you aren’t doing what you are being told to do, you are dropped. Simple! Look at the backline. Who, at the start of the season, would have predicted Gamboa, Simunovis, Boyata and Tierney against Lustig, Toure, Sviatchenko and Tierney?

The manager knows what he’s doing and I am happy with that!

Sorry but why does Dembeles stock have to rise between here and summer

he gets a bad injury and his value could plummet.

Now if he can get a game for France score and shine at Full international level

his stock could go through the roof but no guarantees.

  9. As Pedro said when Brendan was unveiled, the business structure will remain relatively unchanged. Targets were identified, however when Clubs are hiking their prices we will not be held to ransom. Ref Henry Okenyuru and Darlington Nagbe. Brendan understand the way we do business. It obviously works, one look at the wonderful squad we have acquired proves this.

  10. So Normal service has been resumed on cqn. No matter what the Celtic manager or CEO say it is always twisted in the most anti board way imaginable.

If Brendan had said he was really disappointed that we hadn’t backed him and that he was refusing to see out the rest of his contract some people would be only too delighted to believe him, but say he is okay that we didn’t get the targets identified and he is only lying to placate his evil CEO boss.

I asked this yesterday, what has changed from May regarding Peter Lawwell and him being “put in his box”?

I think you are absolutely right; the last few days have been a sea change IMHO. The big guns come calling and we say no. One of the hottest prospects in European football tells the EPL “I’m not f**ing leaving!”

That sends a message to clubs that we are in control of our own destiny; it also tells young up and coming players that this is definitely a fantastic place to be to develop as a footballer.

For me, the telling line is: We had profiles in mind, but if they are not available, you can’t bring them in.

To me, that states that they knew what they wanted, went for it but the selling clubs didn’t want to sell; much like Chelsea and Craig Gordon (and probably Moussa).

The last 36 hours have, to me, shown that the Club have fully backed the manager in refusing to sell, no matter what the price. My take on the Dembele/Chelsea story is this: no official bid was actually lodged but discussions took place. Along the lines of:

Chelsea: While we are on about Craig Gordon, what’s the deal with Dembele? Will you sell?

    Celtic: Not interested.

Chelsea: Come on, every player has a price.

Celtic: No, not interested. We’d be talking north of £35M to even consider it but the boy wants to stay here.

Chelsea: What if we come in around £40? Will you sell?

Celtic: We’ve told you, we don’t want to sell and he doesn’t want to go.

Chelsea: OK, what about the summer? Will you sell?

Celtic: No. We need him for the CL qualification.

Chelsea: OK, we will speak to you again after that?

Celtic: OK, fill yer boots. Speak to you in July.

As far as Henry Okenyuru and Darlington Nagbe go, it seems pretty much that their clubs have responded in much the same way as Celtic have. A more powerful and richer club comes in with an offer for the players; the selling club says “we don’t want to sell” or “we want more money”.

Celtic consider the players have been overvalued and decide not to proceed. Pretty much like buying a house; if the seller asks you for £10K more than you are willing to pay, you walk away.

A player is only worth what the buying club are willing to pay.

Targets were not identified last July because Brendan had to look at what he had and who has improved in the last 6 months. 6 month ago Broonie was a target by some people to be punted, some change in the last 6 month, Broonie,Jamesie and Armstrong.

There was no mega bid just talk, most of it from French sources who rate Dembele much higher than the Scottish media for example and for obvious football reasons.

They don’t look down or have jaundiced views on Scottish Football, they keep a close eye on the CL and international football ( see what Thierry Henry thinks )

For what its worth, I also think Brendan Rodgers words are ambiguous with regard to why or how we handled the window. His statement is open to much wider interpretation, than the usual board finger pointing.

I also think he was too open ( for the first time and not like him ) with his words on Leigh Griffiths.

    Just my opinion mind.

I think Moussa’s value will rise like his age, I don’t think you are valued £40M at 19 and then go back the way, but I also think that had there been the mega bid, we’d have driven him to the airport ourselves.
