When the Champions League shop window is a bit too clear

586

We’re getting to that time of the transfer window when clubs with money and who are either underperforming, or who have silverware in sight, often make desperate decisions.

It is a remarkable statement of the times that three Celtic first team players have attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, at valuations that a year ago would appear eye-watering. It’s just as remarkable that we’ve not locked the suitors in a room until they emptied their wallets.

Seven months into the season, five credible Champions League performances and 27 peerless games in domestic football and our 34-year-old goalkeeper attracts a higher bid than would be achievable by any player at a Scottish club other than Celtic.

Not that I’m agreeing with all this ‘What we have we hold’ business. Every playing asset has a price, to borrow a regular CQN phrase from 2005.

I hear Peter Lawwell was spotted earlier buying tickets for tonight’s showing of T2 Trainspotting for himself, Brendan, Craig, Erik and Moussa. “Unreal” wage offers can turn a player’s head.  Better get them to the movies with their phones switched off.

    1. Why is Jim White considered as any kind of serious journalist in England. He is a figure of fun in Scotland, which seems to me about right

    4. Sky have a full production on the go for their “Deadlien Day” show, with very little material to work with. Little known footlqnllers are being traded for huge sums of money. The hype is self sustaining it seems.

During the close-season,it could be used as a base for those over for the annual walks at Bridgeton/Glasgow Green(!)

  7. Don’t post that often but thought I would tonight.

So proud of our club for sticking it out and simply saying ‘NO’.

It would have been easy to accept the cash from the money monster down south and off-set it against next seasons Champions League money.

We have made a serious statement of intent today, perhaps not to Europe, but cerainly to Scotland.

If we qualify for the group stages this year and sell, or do not sell Dembele, the financial might will put us out of sight for at least five years.

The media were desperate for us to sell either Dembele or Gordon so they could have hung the ‘selling club’ sign round our neck.

    That cannot happen now.

The only thing they can spin is that Gordon will be unhappy.

We can criticise the board but they have backed the manager to the hilt today keeping the two players heavily touted to leave.

I would imagine a hotel next to the ground wouldn’t have too much trouble filling the rooms during the season, especially if it were affiliated to the club.

  10. Rod Docherty. I didn’t know you but I do know you must have been a fine fella with a name like Docherty.

Sleep in the peace of the Lord and may your family and friends be given the strength to bear their grief.

  11. A hotel next to the park would also be able to sell car parking season tickets and access to bars pre/post match. With the new parking restrictions this could be quite a lucrative sideline.

  14. Every day is an opportunity to learn something.

And today’s lesson is that we shouldn’t doubt the word of our manager and club custodians when they tell us we are not selling key players in this window.

All the sceptics will no doubt reappear in the summer.

What will the MSM do now to undermine our domination?

Probably read CQN to scour posts for criticism of our management team.

  17. If Celtic took £30-40 mill for dembele the Sevco press would be crapping it.

If Celtic don’t sell dembele the Sevco press are still crapping it.

Sevco can’t sell anyone so they are also crapping it.

So they’ve run with ‘Celtic fail to offload ciftci!’ Headline.

    It’s just beyond laughable

Fair play to Sevco for holding onto McKay. A less-well-run club might have been tempted to cash in on a £6m bid for a player……
