When the Champions League shop window is a bit too clear

586

We’re getting to that time of the transfer window when clubs with money and who are either underperforming, or who have silverware in sight, often make desperate decisions.

It is a remarkable statement of the times that three Celtic first team players have attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, at valuations that a year ago would appear eye-watering. It’s just as remarkable that we’ve not locked the suitors in a room until they emptied their wallets.

Seven months into the season, five credible Champions League performances and 27 peerless games in domestic football and our 34-year-old goalkeeper attracts a higher bid than would be achievable by any player at a Scottish club other than Celtic.

Not that I’m agreeing with all this ‘What we have we hold’ business. Every playing asset has a price, to borrow a regular CQN phrase from 2005.

I hear Peter Lawwell was spotted earlier buying tickets for tonight’s showing of T2 Trainspotting for himself, Brendan, Craig, Erik and Moussa. “Unreal” wage offers can turn a player’s head.  Better get them to the movies with their phones switched off.

  1. Celtic will be without several players for Wednesday’s Scottish Premiership meeting with Aberdeen.

Strikers Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths and midfielders Stuart Armstrong, Eboue Kouassi and Tom Rogic remain unavailable for Brendan Rodgers.

Aberdeen have a near full-strength squad to pick from.

The only absentee for the Dons will be midfielder Ryan Christie, who cannot play against his parent club under the terms of his loan agreement.

  2. Hope Efe does well at Blackburn. Will try to get along to see him and Charlie at their next home midweek game

He was never r going to play for us and probably no off rd to buy him.

Loan gets him off our wage bill and gives them a chance to look at efe close up and him to improve his bargaining position as summer approaches if he plays well.

I would imagine if we had a buyer we would have sold.

I think tomorrow night will be the biggest test of our unbeaten run. They have came back from break well and with so many out, especially in attacking areas, it’ll be a huge test of the squad. I’d start Aitchison as he’s a natural striker and keep Sinclair and Forrest wide.

Am I alone in thinking that the squad we now have and the coaching staff, who have transformed the team, we now have, that we have enough to come through the qualifiers?

If so, then I reckon there will be a queue of good players lining up to join us for the group stages.

I think Henry O was/is being lined up as a replacement for Roberts, not Dembelé.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

  8. Can we invite Efe back on the day we’re presented with the league trophy and allow him one last somersault off the presentation platform?

  9. I agree tomorrow night will be tricky, I would go with the same team as Sunday. Would like to see Roberts in the false 9 position with Sinclair on the left. Would could do with a good shift from James Forrest.

  10. I have somehow travelled to a distant part of the infinite multiverse, without the aid of hallucinogenic substances I may add :-) . Its an almost identical reality to our own apart from here Celtic FC casually brush off almost 50 million pounds in transfer fees being offered for 2 of the squad. However some things are the same as our own wee part of the multiverse namely that Sevco are skint and no fecker has bid even 1 thin dime for any of their bargain basement journeymen plunging the new club further into deep merde.

    May be of interest.

Spent a Summer in Clifden , or rather Ballyconneely ,which is the home of one of Billy Connolly`s ancestors. I was struck by the similarity between the surname and the town. Surely no coincidence.

*no not all, the name Connolly is synonymous with the place. My granny is buried in the old cemetery down at the Atlantic there; she was on holiday when she passed away, saw her name in the parish, St Patrick’s, ledger. Huge Dumbarton connection in that part of the world.

  12. Thom

We are imo in a far better place than we were at the start of the qualifiers this season, I have every faith that Brendan can negotiate them with a tad more ease than we did this season.

Get the defence sorted-tied down and we will be fine.

Yes it was an impressive diplay from big Efe.

TBH I’m not that much interested in a cafe (sorry Almore) or a Museum.

Our museum already stands proud and loud lit up in green.

I want a Champions League winning side on the park playing in the hoops.

None of this setting your sights on under achievement with a focus on group stages.

Barrie McKay would have sorted that.

    Macjay1 / TET,

I think BR will have the squad ready for the qualifiers, in spite of stupid Internationals.

Ajer and Christie will be back, after half a season in the PL.

They will augment the squad, especially for the first round.

Whether Chelsea actually bid for DB or not, the story is out there and it is hurting going on.

Hopefully with the record business sorted, we will be even more relaxed tomorrow and if the worst comes to the worst, any points dropped would be going in the right direction, I.e., North and not South.

    Another win- win.
