When the Champions League shop window is a bit too clear

586

We’re getting to that time of the transfer window when clubs with money and who are either underperforming, or who have silverware in sight, often make desperate decisions.

It is a remarkable statement of the times that three Celtic first team players have attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, at valuations that a year ago would appear eye-watering. It’s just as remarkable that we’ve not locked the suitors in a room until they emptied their wallets.

Seven months into the season, five credible Champions League performances and 27 peerless games in domestic football and our 34-year-old goalkeeper attracts a higher bid than would be achievable by any player at a Scottish club other than Celtic.

Not that I’m agreeing with all this ‘What we have we hold’ business. Every playing asset has a price, to borrow a regular CQN phrase from 2005.

I hear Peter Lawwell was spotted earlier buying tickets for tonight’s showing of T2 Trainspotting for himself, Brendan, Craig, Erik and Moussa. “Unreal” wage offers can turn a player’s head.  Better get them to the movies with their phones switched off.

I think you are thinking of Ludo. I’m pretty sure The King of Kings cost us circa 600k.

  2. Henrik Larsson was born in Helsingborg, Scania. His father, Francisco Rocha, is from Cape Verde,[5] and his mother, Eva Larsson, is Swedish.[6] His parents, who never married and split up when he was 12,[6] decided that he should take his mother’s surname because they felt it would make it easier for their son to be accepted in Sweden.[7] He credits his father for his love of football.[6] His father gave him a football when he was 16 months old and as a child he was able to practice with brothers and friends on a large field near his home in Helsingborg.[8] He has said of his school years: “I experienced some racism, because back then it was unusual to have a dark kid at school, I was one of the few.”[9] He watched English football on television and his parents gave him a video of Pelé’s life story, both of which inspired him.[9]

The french journalist concerned were emphatic that Chelsea did make an offer in excess of 34 million. I think those journalist understand ‘integrity’ and ‘reputation’.

Leigh Griffiths must be sick as a pig-signed as a striker three years ago,he scored 7 in 14.

Though overcoming the doubts of many fans re his temperament,he found himself having to impress a new manager, who didn’t take to him at first.

Well,he scored 20 in 41,then 40 in 51 to allay those doubts and become the main striker.

Only to find himself facing the very same problems with another new manager, his third in his three years at Celtic.

And he’s still scored 13 in 25 this season!

Whatever it is you need to do,Leigh-just do it! The time to get p….d off about having to repeatedly prove yourself is when you can’t anymore.

Some posters suggesting that we should accept a large bid for Moussa and use the money to buy 3 or 4 players to improve the team. Naive.

If Celtic do eventually sell Moussa, or anyone else, for £40M or more, then you can be sure that the first time we enquire after a player who is valued around £3-£5M, we will be quoted £20M.

No Fess, I said not very professional. All the other words, which are open to interpretation were from Brendan.

We did not breeze into the Champions League group stages last year, and if the draw is unkind to us next year then there is no guarantee we’ll make the group stages then. With so much at risk forward planning is a fundamental prerequisite to any club with ambition. Especially a club that can afford to take a punt or two.

I’m not advocating an Dick Advocaat Doctrine, I’m wishing we follow an affordable policy of recruitment to ensure for a bright future of the future generations of Celtic Supporters, is that so mean of me?

LG has talent, but is an idiot. Maybe a bit of public shaming is what it will take to get him to screw the nut and thus allow him to achieve his full potential.

  9. Ole Henrik was just as clever off the field as he was on it and insisted on having a clause in his contract at Feyenoord that he could be transferred for a 600K bid.

And I forgot to say too, I truly believe that the well being and happiness of the Celtic Support with regards the club is much more important to me than the well being and dividend payout of any transient investor or director.

I saw us win the big one, I’d love it if the generations since, and the generations to come, experienced the same joy that I once did, and still do.

For that to ever happen we need ambition and we need players of caliber.

Kit, it takes a lot of skill to come over so condescending and sanctimonious in one short paragraph, but you have excelled yourself there!

Its all about opinions; you quoted Brendan Rodgers’ interview and I had the seeming audacity to opine on it. You seem, somehow, to have taken that as a slight. The response was written prior to your reference to a semantic minefield; andI did clearly state that it was my own view on it.

Where that involves a high horse, defence of the faith, sheriffs badge or white hat, I certainly don’t know.

Grow up son? Get over yourself and try not to come over as so patronising in future.
