Why SFA will reject Rangers appeal

279

The reason a transfer ban was imposed on Rangers is straightforward enough, they bought players and cannot pay for them. Clubs from Vienna to Edinburgh are owed money and have little prospect of being paid ahead of the coming transfer window, a fact which will have an enormous impact on their own competitive challenge next season.

The SFA cannot allow member clubs to continue to splash cash on players while clubs from other associations go without payment. It has a duty to inhibit clubs in violation of the rules from further strengthening while others have been weakened as a consequence.

This notion is tolerated in Scotland (only by those with a vested interest in Rangers flourishing) but is simply untenable. The appeal will be rejected.

It beggars belief that Duff and Phelps complain that Rangers competitive challenge will be inhibited as a result of not being able to sign yet more players, the administrators are the architects of the situation the club finds itself in.

Duff and Phelps devised a plan which would see Rangers retain their squad, or at the very least, be in a position to trade players in the summer. The plan was sold as a great victory, a panacea which would ensure the club would continue to field a competitive team throughout the administration process, something unheard of at other clubs in the same situation.

At significant cost to creditors, they kept players on full pay for several weeks before agreeing to retain the entire squad on reduced salaries. Throughout this period they played teams they owe money to, including Hearts, who they defeated last week while using a player bought from Hearts with an outstanding £800k bill.

For signing players and gaining a competitive advantage, without paying for them, inhibiting competitors’ teambuilding efforts, the only appropriate punishment is a transfer ban.

No disrespect to junior, amateur and lower league teams, but…

One team in Glasgow,
There’s only one team in Glasgow.
One team in Glasgow,
There’s only one team in Glasgow…

    Are black brogues OK?

I’m wearing a pair of black brogues right now. (A very nice pair of Crockett & Jones derby full brogues, for the benefit of fellow shoe fetishists.) I’d be mortified if I were committing a faux pas.

I am with your old man on the Celtic strip-with one exception.I was at the match when we first wore numbers on our shorts,I was in Lisbon when we wore white socks and I was at Elland Road for the European Cup semi final when we wore orange socks.

My preference is actually to have hooped socks with the dark green as worn in my early days ( 1950s ) of following the team.

No tinkering with the club crest- by all means introduce a supplementary one such as the famine commemoration or centenary cross-but the four leaf clover represents the essential Celtic.

Well done again Paul on a splendidly clear and succinct explanation.

Now a personal anguish.I am flying to Lima in Peru on Sunday morning from Paris at around 10.30am.The flight takes around 11 hours so my thoughts will be at Celtic Park.Trying to figure out how I can explain to Air France pilots that I will be in need of important information during the flight. All suggestions welcome.

The arbitration was Scottish but the contract was governed by English law and the appeal of the Aribiter’s decision made in Glasgow was heard in the High Court in London.

The parties eventually settled out of court but the possibility of appeals re the various fine points re locus, jurisdiction etc were endless.

Agree with you regarding the Centenary year cest. A brilliant idea and one thing our former custodians did get right. It was a wonderful tribute to Brother Walfrid.

I would say the shorts and socks are the only thing that should be interchangeable. I liked the hooped socks but they can’t be hooped all the time. Nike have a duty to change various things. I think the black socks are a strange addition. I know they were used in the past and it is a nostalgic reason but I remember when I played football as a youth regulalry we always had dark socks because they were easier to clean. How many SPL teams wear black/dark socks? I sense we will be wearing white most of the season.

I hope the away strip this year is a cracker because I think that in the last ten years they have been woeful!

Rangers manager Ally McCoist insists he makes no apology for demanding transparency over the Scottish Football Association’s judicial panel.

McCoist called for the three members to be named after they hit the club with a £160,000 fine and a 12-month embargo on registering players over 17, mainly for bringing the game into disrepute since Craig Whyte’s takeover.

Strathclyde Police later confirmed they were investigating alleged threats made against the panel after the SFA said their identities had been “compromised”.

One of the panel members, Raith Rovers director Eric Drysdale, spoke out and disagreed with McCoist’s assertion that they should be named.

The Rangers manager released a statement on Thursday morning defending his calls for transparency, while claiming his remarks were not a signal for fans to engage in threatening behaviour.

Asked 24 hours later if he had any regrets over his original comments, McCoist said: “Not at all. I think a lot of people have misinterpreted my statement as some form of apology.

“It’s anything but an apology. I stand by everything I’ve said. In fact, I was delighted to see Mr Drysdale come out and disagree with my comments.

“I’ve got nothing but the utmost respect for him now because I know who the gentleman is.

“I still disagree with the panel and their decision but I fully appreciate the fact that I know who the gentleman is now.

Three members of the Real IRA were today beginning 30-year jail terms for plotting a bombing campaign.
