You did this in 2013

1233

Yet again during 2013 we asked you to put your hand in your pocket and you responded as only Celtic fans do.  You raised £6000 before and during the focus of our summer fundraising activity, the annual golf day.  £4500 of this went towards the 1254125 Appeal, which during the year did an enormous amount to anchor the club and support right back to where we came from.  Clic Sargent, who help children with cancer, also benefited at that time.

Thanks also to those who sponsored my 10k at the Great Scottish Run in October to the tune of £1552.  Times remain tight for many, so I the value of your support.

Perhaps the biggest response all year came from the commitment we made to Mary’s Meals to build and kit a kitchen at the Kholoni Primary School in Malawi.  1200 kids are registered at the school but there are no catering facilities, so students go hungry, or simply don’t go to school at all.  Pablophanque’s family sent on the £4500 support they received in 2011 to the appeal, while 470 people booked a seat at the CQteN St Patrick’s Day dinner, with more on the waiting list.  The work we’ll achieve in 2014 will be incredible.

This place can stress and annoy sometimes but it has become a great window into the soul of the Celtic support.

Have a great Christmas and thank you for all your support.

I expect todays game to be a real tough one for the hoops as the Saints are not a bad side at home and unlike Hearts they will cross the half- way line and offer some threat.I am looking forward to the game and although I am taking Celtic for a win a share of the points wouldnt surprise me. 21. Som mes que un club on

    RFCIL and their giveaways….

A new thread but there’s still only one pantomime in town.

I noted that The Rangers Intergalactic Football Clumpany Unlimited plc (Not In Administration) (Yet) were all over the media on Christmas Eve trumpeting their largesse in giving away 650 free tickets to the homeless for their game today against Stranraer.

    So far so generous.

However The Herald made a passing reference to these tickets being distributed via the Rangers Charity Foundation. This raised two questions. Firstly, why use the Latin word “via” when what you mean could be expressed by the shorter English word “by’? Secondly, well, just why? If you are giving away free tickets why tie up the resources of a charity to do so? Why can’t the distribution be done by your own ticketing system? Presumably the use of the resources of the charity costs money and if it’s expended on distributing freebies for a football match that’s money that is not going to be spent on other charitable causes. Perhaps The Rangers Etc. (life’s too short) (unless you’re The Rangers Etc.) are paying the Foundation for their services.

Ordinarily I wouldn’t have given the matter any further thought but a couple of things occurred to me. It’s only a matter of months since the Foundation were severely criticised by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator for a number of things including a finding of an inherent conflict of interest. This followed the “charity” match with A.C. Milan when the Foundation decided that the most worthy beneficiary of the charitable funds raised was a football club/company/eternal being, with the word “Rangers” in its name, which had gone into administration the previous month. Yup, the money went to Duff and Phelps. Still it is common knowledge what a sterling job they did for the creditors on whose benefit they were acting. It is noteworthy that despite the damning findings no action was taken against the Foundation. Must be something to do with bodies which have “Scottish” in their title.

Furthermore, this story had the ring of a story at the start of December when the media couldn’t stop telling us of 2000 free tickets being given to schoolchildren for the game against Ayr United. However I recall that at that time a poster on here indicated that the tickets were being charged to, yes, you’ve guessed it, the Foundation. I don’t recall any follow up one way or another.

A quick look at The Rangers Etc. website disclosed a statement headed “Rangers Give Tickets To Homeless” which advised that 650 tickets were indeed being donated and a list of organisations “have all received tickets via the Rangers Charity Foundation”.

Well at least one of my questions has been answered. The use of the Latin word was lifted directly from the official website. Latin in Edmiston Drive? Who would have thunk it?

This still didn’t explain why the Foundation was involved or required.

Their website only confused matters further. Their statement was that ” Rangers FC and the Foundation have donated 1000 tickets for the Boxing Day fixture.” 1000? A continuation page further muddied the waters by referring to 600 tickets. As at today the statement has been edited to read “over 600″.

Who is giving away these free tickets?

    Is it The Rangers Etc.?

    Is it the Foundation?

If it’s The Rangers Etc. is any payment being received? For example, from the Foundation?

If it’s the Foundation is any payment being made? For example, to The Rangers Etc.?

The answer to the question of whether any payment was made for the Ayr United game would go a long way to answering these questions. If only there were people in the media who had access to ask but you never see, read or hear anything about them.

You realise you’re dealing with people who are, let’s say, economical with the truth, on an epic scale, when not only can you not believe what they say but you can’t even believe the opposite of what they say.

Re the Wren Boys or the Wran Boys as it is pronounced, the practice of using a live bird died out in the last century. Nobody goes and kills a wren now if they did they would be prosecuted by The Prevention to Cruelty of Animals Brigade. It is mostly a Country thing but you will have a few young opportunists around the towns going from door to door singing in an appalling manner, you’d give them a few bob just to shut them up. However what you often get would be a properly organised bunch of very good traditional musicians who would dress up and go around to the pubs, they would play a set for a half hour or so, pass the hat around and move on to next pub. Sometimes they do it for Charity but I suspect they are allowed to deduct their drink money so when they do finish the amount going to Charity would probably equate a Hun fundraising jamboree.

  30. Hail Hail, and Happy Boxing Day to all middle-aged Tims after the unbearable 2 day football drought of 2013.

Time to flag up my preferred team for this fixture. As usual, I’ll leave aside my unpopular enthusiasm for Zaluska, and go with crowd wisdom. Other than that, here’s my XI, with the approval of Stephen House, Peter Lawwell, and the Inverness safety officer, which I hope will bring some flare to proceedings.

I would lay money down on a return to the diamond formation today that sliced apart Hearts & Motherwell.

On narrower pitches with teams that want to come out and attack now and then (or even if they don’t eventually succumb to fan pressure) the 4-4-2 diamond works a treat, both this season and last.

It may not be quite as effective at home (although I still maintain that Biton should have played CDM with Brown on the right), but in SPL away matches it has a 100% success rate.

Biton is in danger of being dropped after getting subbed in the last game, which I think would be unjust, as the failure of that formation in the recent game had as much to do with Brown’s shortcomings at CDM as Biton’s ineffectiveness on the right.

I hope Mulgrew is fit – he is in serious contention for POTY again, although right now maybe Virgil just pips him. If he is, he MUST start at CDM – he is unmatched there. Put Brown at the head of the diamond, where he brings something more dynamic and direct than Kris Commons, who should play up front with Stokes – our last unarguably good strike pairing?

    Happy Festivus to all:
