Celtic earned the right to be taken seriously

151

After so many years, so many defeats, we went to Germany, England, then Belgium, on consecutive Champions Group stage away games, unbeaten. This run of form crept up on us. It didn’t look likely after the game immediately preceding this run, a 7-0 rout in Barcelona, but Brendan Rodgers amended the plan and, on the road, he hasn’t looked back.

Extrapolation is dangerous. It is wiser to mistrust the past than to put too much faith in it, but this Celtic team have earned the right to be taken seriously at the Allianz Arena tonight. They will play unburdened with expectations and without fear.

I’ve watched too many of these games with a nervous disposition. Let’s enjoy this one.

Bring it on.

OUR SECOND CQN PODCAST this week, featuring interviews with ex-Celts Alan Stubbs and Chris Sutton, previewing the big games this week against Bayern Munich and Hibs at Hampden on Saturday.

Stubbs gives an insight into Liam Henderson as a player and talks about where his career should go from here.

BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton, who was speaking at the SPFL Betfred League Cup media day, spoke about Celtic’s European challenge in Munich and his former gaffer Gordon Strachan’s departure from Hampden Park.

BT Sport UCL - CS 2

Speaking on behalf of BT Sport, Alan Stubbs also spoke about his regret at leaving Hibs, and looks ahead to the League Cup semi-final between two of his former clubs.

BT Sport is where the best go head to head. Watch Bayern Munich v Celtic exclusively live in the UEFA Champions League on BT Sport ESPN from 7pm tonight & Hibs v Celtic exclusively live in the SPFL Betfred League Cup on BT Sport 1 from 11:15am on Saturday 21st October.

  1. mullet and co 2 on

Would be great to pull a performance out tonight. My fear is that our passing has disintegrated over the last month and a bit.

Too many injuries and too much chopping and changing have led to passing patterns disintegrating.

Ntcham is playing on the left at times in a deeper role than we saw any of our midfield occupy last season. His early passing has resulted in positive damage but he also passes to opponents with some regularity. There is a player there and he reminds me of Armstrong before Brendan told him to improve his passing. Armstrong is also still guilty of gifting possession in situations with little pressure.

It’s a great stat that Paul mentions re lack of losses in the group stages away from home recently. I would be looking for Gordon to have a Worldy in goal – he is due one and for us to try and retain possession further up field. We will create chances too.

Against all of that, I don’t think we have ever had a 0-0 in Champions League away from home. Despite our ability to score and them being, well, Bayern, I still think 0-0 is somehow on the cards.

  2. Team confirmed apparently

The airport full of fellow Celts heading for Munich but I can’t be there. So near not but not near enough. Then seemed not sure if I can even see it on TV! However mien host has contacted a bar in the next village and organised TV tuned to the game and a table complete with our own barrel of beer. Taxi there and back……………

  6. If we are getting pumped 4-0 at half time tonight we should take Broony and Paddy off to save them for Saturday.

    :-(

  7. I’ve been reading Johnjamessite for some time now. He initially refused t accept comments from “Timmy” named posters, even although he couldn’t get many, if any, knuckledraggers to contribute to his site. He now gleefully accepts comments and donations from anyone. He goes in the huff if he gets criticised.

His output is prodigous and much of it is very funny. However, he is claiming exclusives for material which I read on here, on SFM and on Phil’s site, years ago. He has had a few real exclusives, to be fair.

He is no liquidation denier and gets into King and SDM with gusto. IMO, he is too near the bone to be a hun plant or part of any Level 5 conspiracy. He certainly loves himself and his continuous begging for cash is offputting, but he has played a big part in exposing the cheating and criminality emanating from Ibrox. The huns hate him big time which is a big plus for me.

  8. Just checked Bet 365. We are 28/1 to win. The draw is 11/1.

I think the bookies refer to this as being ‘friendless’ in the market. They really don’t rate us.

I’m going to have a small bet on both from sheer bloody mindedness.

I actually think Bayern will win comfortably, 3-0 or something in that envelop. I’ve been wrong before with this team, so hope I am again.

  9. U19’s

Bookies have Celtic 21/10. Bayern 19/20.

Much less of a gap at that level.

  10. Paul67 et al

Looks like you were right Paul when you predicted, a wee while back, that Jozo and Dedryck would be back fit by the end of September. Too bad it was only for one game mind you. Noticed that Brendan was complimentary about Dundee’s centre back Jack Hendry, who would be eligible to play for Scotland but for being over six feet tall. He certainly impressed those of us at the game on Saturday, tall, strong, good in the air, good on the ground and able to to take the ball out of defence on a couple of occasions. Only twenty two, one to keep an interest in methinks.
