Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

    Fair enough if that is your team then stick with it and see then have enough on the bench if things change but do not change formation week in week out.

    Aberdeen’s points total and 2 early cup exits tell you they are much the same as last season

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    And, IMO, that is a good sign of progress. The League is the real Barometer.
    I want the New Rangers to be battered Right Left and Centre. Aberdeen are very stable and that encourages me. Rangers are hated by rank and file Supporters. I really want Aberdeen to get into the Europa League group stages, so they can grow further.
    You are right…do it on the pitch instead of bumping your gums in the papers.
    Pity the board are not so vocal.
    They never seem to have anything to say, unless its to slag off their own supporters.
    I’m up for supporting the team thru thick and thin, thats not an issue, but I’m worried as I’ve read several quotes now saying Ronnie never loses his temper,
    If thats true I do not believe he will get maximum effort out of the players, in fact I think quite a few are already taking advantage of his placid nature,
    I’m not a fan of SAF for obvious reasons but he used to lose his temper and even sometimes pretend to lose his temper to get the best out of his players,
    This is something I think Ronnie will have to do if he is to A survive and B motivate his players,
    Ask yourself….do they look motivated?
  5. Agreed that we have no right to expect to be miles ahead of anybody. If we’re not miles ahead of everybody, though, I want that to be because others are improving up to our level. If its because we’re being reduced to a lower level, that’s surely the road to oblivion. Action is needed now. The summer’s too late especially since there will be no improvements and we’ll have more of the same, or worse, next year.
    Groundhog day was last Tuesday. We don’t want our own Groundhog season.
    So you’ve now taken your obvious dislike of the GB to a new level ? Some poor wee guy is going to have his whole life ruined through his association with them ? Did you ever sing the odd ‘dodgy’ song while going to all those games you were at as a youngster ? Never sang an IRA related song ? Difference being they are targeted now, same as our supporters buses are at just about every away game. But that’s ok right ? You get your way then you’ll be sitting at CP every other week in total silence, apart off course from the usual diatribe towards certain of our players which certainly doesnt come from GB. Must be great being the greatest Celtic supporter ever
    Don’t need to know what players said, they can only ever predict improvement, else why would they take the money, problem here is a supporter and his what exactly ?
    His tony Donnelley his pathetic excuses to no question failure, it’s all getting a bit sad really
  8. Trebles are very hard to win in any league, but your spot on we should be getting it right in Scotland before we even think about champions league
  9. As was mentioned earlier this week, Scott Brown came in for a lot of late challenges just after his was booked that the ref chose to ignore.
    Persistent fouling does not have to be by the same player it can be a few on one player.
    We again though need to recognize we are not getting the calls and somebody else step up to help him out.
    We do not have that and need it more than most.
  10. Peter Lawwell is not the problem, here, He is however part of the Board who appointed Ronny.
    Peter Lawwell and his team heads up our off field activities. He has performed well and under his leadership we have improved the stadium and the environs extremely well, Celtic Way and the statues are a particular triumph. Lets not forget the acquisition and development of the Lennoxtown facilities. He has also handled the major commercial contracts involving Nike and now New Balance. Celtics name is high in the ECA.
    However, he has no say in the Football and Scouting Departments and it is these areas where we are currently not performing.. Ronny and his team are given a higher Budget than any other Scottish Team on both Transfers and salaries. Much Higher. The Academy and Scouting Department has also not being performing well recently. John Park and his colleagues despite huge resources are not out performing other clubs and we seem to be buying players rather than Developing our own.
    Peter Lawwell in my opinion has been generally good for Celtic and we would not improve one little bit if he left. Our problems are in the Football Department and this is where our focus should be. The Board has continually backed the Managers and gave them resources O’Neill, Strachan, Mowbray, Lennon and now Deila have all been backed.
    Celtic have performed well against a background of our main rivals, cheating and conspiring with SFA SPFL and Media. Off the park we have well outperformed the Dark Side who have went burst.
    Ronny is a nice bloke but it is within his area where our problems lie, not in our off field activities
    Who appointed Ronny? Who is John Park’s boss?
    The current malaise is not one person, it’s many, but the buck must stop with the person running the show.
    You say that PL has no say in Football & Scouting Departments. He does, he runs them. That is part of the problem, the Football department should be run by a Director of Football, an ex player, manager, and the CEO should set the budgets and strive to increase them.
    I’d say RD does not grasp what it takes mentally or tecnhinally to play for Celtic(see Ambrose & Mackay-Steven) AND is not ruthless enough to make the changes required.
    We are asking a man to change his personality to sort out our problems.
    He is a man still grateful to have the job nearly 2 years in.
    I’d love Aberdeen to do well but not at the expense of Celtic.
    Aberdeen played the same game as Malmo, Molde and countless others. We are not difficult to beat.
    Aberdeen have now beaten us twice in one season and that is a feat that has not been achieved since the 90s.
    Yip I’d love a title race but I’d prefer one I could believe in my own team and not one where we look to be deliberately playing with one arm behind our back.
    I wanted us to part company with Ronny after the Europa league. We had enough evidence then to make a decision. Now having brought in 23 players and no sign of any improvement we wish to tread water?
    What do we think Deila is going to pull out of the hat to win the league never mind the qualification for the champions league (which now looks like we have absolutely no appetite or ambition to compete in).
    Aberdeen, Dundee United and even Hearts pulled in massive crowds in the 80s, the skewed commercial income wasn’t there and we had the Kelly’s and Whites to deal with. Now we have a Plc driven by accounting success.
    It’s only an exciting title race for those that enjoy the favourite handicapping themselves through their own aloof arrogant approach. The general public will absolutely salivate at the prospect of this clubs self abuse and limping towards a title. It’s an embarrassing spectacle.
    Ronny DEE is very Lonely right now, he needs Support. He is headstrong, Thankfully.
  19. SydneyTim says sack Lawell now on
    Ehh big boy Peter Lawell and not the board appointed Ronny
    Peter Lawell has complete charge of all scouting
    You have no idea
    Go away to ibrox
  20. As a supporter looking I look on in disbelief at our signings, how many attacking midfielders do we need ?our scouting, our tactics, our formation and our inability to defend corners. I would bring Davy Hay in to as top scout., as for Ronnie it would depend who we can get in this late in the season. Aberdeen will drop points but the are a United squad with a fired up support behind them.we will also drop points but with the crowd behind the team we might just be able to lift them over the finishing line
    I believe we as supporters need to get behind the team home and away .Everyone have a good swally before every game and give it laldy until the end of the season.i want a day out at the Scottish Cup Final. I just us to win the double and then sort out the mess we are in.
  21. bigbhoy on 5th February 2016 2:17 pm
    The larger budget dictates that over a season we should come out on top. On an individual match basis it’s never a guarantee.
    It’s at this stage of this kind of response that I usually reference the time Celtic bt Barcelon as an example of the smaller budgeted team triumphing over the larger budgeted team.
    Remember that time we beat Barcelona? It happens.
    Well….if the board had signed Broto when MON wanted him, instead of dragging their erses so that he would miss the euro-deadline….then, Broto would have played Seville…imho
    *If you know yer history right enough.
    He came tae Parkheid on a short term contract as cover for the injured Rab Douglas and Magnus Hedman.
    He impressed during his 10 games and MON offered him a 2 year contract which HE delayed signing, the contract offer was then withdrawn.
    After leaving us he went on trial and tour with Ipswich before being rejected. He then joined WGS at Southampton on a 6 week trial before moving on a 1 year deal to Real Murcia.
    He was dropped as first choice GK by them and moved at to Getafe, who after failing to impress told him tae Getafe. He eventually went out of the game.
    Flash in the pan comes tae mind when looking back at his time at Parkheid.
    BTW Rab the Brickie may have been at fault in Seville but Bobo cost us the game.
  23. To those with more knowledge of Spanish football than myself. What’s the relative difference in budget between Barca at the top and Levante at the bottom?
    They’ve lost a couple of games and are only 3pts clear at the top, are miles of column inches being written suggesting Luis Enrique is on a shoogly peg?
  24. Prosecutors have dropped five charges against the former administrators of oldco Rangers in the multi-million-pound fraud case.
    David Whitehouse and Paul Clark are facing trial alongside former owner Craig Whyte, 44, ex-chief executive Charles Green, 62, and three other men over a number of charges relating to their dealings with the club.
    Whyte, Green and David Grier have also had allegations against them dropped. Charges seven, eight and nine, which alleged Whyte and Grier obtained thousands of pounds from Rangers by fraud were also deserted. Green has now also been deleted from charge 12.
    The indictment has now been reduced from 15 charges to nine.
    The Duff and Phelps employees had the charges against them deserted by the Crown during a preliminary hearing at court in Edinburgh on Friday.
    David Grier, Gary Withey, 51, and Imran Ahmad also face a number of charges relating to their dealings with the club.
    Clark and Whitehouse still face two charges but charges one, four, ten, 11 and 13 on the 28-page indictment have been deserted.
    The pair were accused in, charge one, of conspiring with Whyte and three other men to obtain by fraud a controlling stake in Rangers.
    Whitehouse and Clark were accused of involvment in serious organised crime in charge four and in charge ten were accused of making the administration of Rangers “inevitable” as well as failing to pay a £2.8m tax liability and receiving £6m from Ticketus LLP.
    They were also accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice in charges 11 and 13. The charges have now been dropped.
    I don’t believe Aberdeen are all that much better than last season. One advantage they do have is in fielding a settled team from last season to this.
    They are not in the moneyball trap of recruiting to sell on for a profit regardless of the effect on continuity.
    Where our version of moneyball really falls down though, is when we sell Wanyamas and Van Dijks only to replace them with Boerrigters and Ciftci’s
    well we have a full back who is struggling and Efe is long serving in comparison to the rest of our CB’s – a position where injury is also taking its toll.
    But a ruthless manager comes in and has lists of those who:
    1) are immediately surplus to requirements
    2) will be given a chance to impress, or
    3) will build the side around.
    Efe would be on list 1 – its just the way it is. He’s a good guy, he has ability and will find a club where his every move is not monitored and he can relax a bit.
    But if we’re not going to be ruthless we can expect more of the same.
