Sviatchenko out but turmoil also at Astana

589

I remember a situation several years ago when we had five full backs and converted-full backs out injured at the same time. The injured count for central defenders is not currently as high but the situation is just as critical.

Erik Sviatchenko joins Jozo Simunovic, Dedryck Boyata and Kristoffer Ajer on the injured list. Kolo Toure is certain to be added to the Uefa squad before tonight’s deadline but will be pushed to be match fit for next week.

Fortunately, the man who has spent more time injured over the last two seasons than anyone else, Mikael Lustig, is fit and able to move from full back into the middle, with Saidy Janko able to deputise on the right.

More words have been written about Efe Ambrose than any other Celtic player this month. It’s quite possible he’ll move on towards the end of the transfer window but he’s set to be given an opportunity to make good his error in Gibraltar by leading an unfamiliar defensive line-up in Astana tomorrow.

If I had a choice, I would prefer Celtic in adversity than Celtic over-confident. We know we will have to protect the defence tomorrow so the match plan should be straightforward.

Astana are not without their concerns either. Kazak media are concerned Astana are weaker than a year ago, due to the departure of Georgi Zhukov the likely absence of captain and top scorer, Tanant Nuserbayev, added to the turmoil at the club this week, caused by Lyon’s bid for midfielder, Nemanja Maksimovic. They will battle tomorrow, but their preparations are far from ideal.

  1. Not much else Brendan Rodgers can do other than be bullish about our chances given he’s been slapped with the CL ‘fail to prepare policy’, like so many other Celtic managers before him. You’d think we’d accept by now ‘that this is not a CL squad’ © Paul67 and be done with it? The board have, they plan for Europa.

‘Decimated‘ by a new injury of one key player, the only constant since last January, Celtic fans are left fearful again.

How many of those that queued for a season ticket thought we’d be giving CL qualification a real good go with an new ‘EPL quality’ manager, instead of just apparently rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic with the team that shocked on the rock.

Weeks of new team talks, new coaches, new methods and a new game plan will be severely tested (unlike Gibraltar?) against a side with new CL pedigree. We’re not apparently even in the slow lane, we’re on the hard shoulder after Sevco chasing the best of the Bosmans, and clearly with Thursday night fayre to promote, next winter.

BSR- very true,if I may say a bit more critical of the current situation, totally agree. We must have knew what money we were getting for International Cup,£7.5 million approx, add the ST money, and the £10mil PL says we lose per season when no Huns to play, current spend is 500 k for Dembele. I really hope we’re not having the annual CQN European Debacle debate next Wednesday night. HH

  4. Thanks to Hrvatski Jim and Burgas Hoops for the food and drinks tips. Hopefully I will try them tonight while celebrating a draw or win for the Bhoys.

  7. Sad to see Jordan Larsson being dragged into the nonsense that passes for football rivalry in Scotland.

I can fully understand why his father won’t let him anywhere near the Scottish game, regardless of how much affection he has for Celtic.

Just placed a modest wager on today’s game.

    FC Astana 2-2 Celtic.

Agreed. Jordan should have ignored it.

However,if it’s true that one of the reasons for Henrik wanting to leave was that the youngster was getting a Glesca twang,I’d have preferred a different reply.

I genuinely doubt anyone on here has ever said they hope we lose a match.

And that includes, for instance,in the dark days when we were due to play a challenger to Der Hun.

Though I was tempted on occasion wi that example…

We have to raise the bar with whom we sign, to stay ahead domestically where we’ll otherwise be handicapped in a league we know is warped.

In terms of Europe we’re strictly Europa but have a carrot dangled every year which we choose not to reach.

They could at least kid us on that they want the CL,. Ronny was judged on how we’d do in Europe before a ball was kicked, and they have given Rodgers the job, and his team.

We are about to find out how a coach plays football.
