Warning signs observed, creative issue lies ahead

640

What warning signs there were, were observed. Last season Qarabag beat Salzburg (who then won at Celtic Park), drew home and away with Twente and Saint Etienne, drew at home with Inter, and beat Europa League finalists, Dnipro. Remotely disrespect their challenge, and you’d leave Baku empty handed.

I think we would be over-generous to either team to make too much of the chances on show. James Forrest had the goal at his mercy, before choosing to make a pass, which, if it got through the immediate defender, would have found a heavily marked Leigh Griffiths, but shots from distance don’t count.  This was a game without real chances.  It also provided some evidence that James Forrest’s confidence is not where it once was.

The defence scarcely put a foot out of place but the performance of Stefan Johansen and Scott Brown was pivotal to the outcome. Johansen disrupted Qarabeg high up the field, showing incredible energy levels in that heat. Scott Brown held a deeper position throughout and got himself in the way of Qarabag repeatedly.

We had nothing going forward. Gary Mackay-Steven was put on his bum a few times early on and looked to be suffering heat-exhaustion more than anyone else. Nadir Ciftci was isolated, again, but the hoped-for link play didn’t materialise. He needs a link player. That’s a problem for another day. Between now and then, you and I have a Champions League play-off draw to worry about.  Once we know our fate we can worry about being more creative.

It was an absolute treat again to see the Celtic FC Foundation logo, this time on the first choice jersey.  Magners could have put their bottled water brand there instead, but they get what this relationship with Celtic is all about.  The help they’ve given our Mary’s Meals, school kitchen appeal is further evidence of this.

Our competition where you can win a Celtic third choice (bumblebee) top, courtesy of Mangers, closes at 14:00 THIS AFTERNOON.  To enter, email celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the country Mary’s Meals have built four CQN school kitchens in the subject line of your message.

If you can cope with the excitement of also sending a £1 or £2 to the appeal while entering, you can do so here.  Thank you.

BBC have been in perma rage since 2012, and know that Dave King is the latest in a line of Real Rainjurs men without the necessary amount of money to launch a new club.

This annoying Champions League which Celtic march relentlessly towards just makes them more annoyed, and astonished why Rotherham have more chance of getting their unaffordable wee diddy league target.

Sky can’t cover the CL with, or without Celtic so they’ll poo poo it, at every opportunity.

    C’est La vie csc

  2. Great to be in the draw tomorrow morning. Without wanting to tempt fate too much, I’m not overly worried who we draw. I reckon we can take any of them.

CQN looks better every day. Well doe to all involved in the upgrade.

Working in the office down in Foreign this week.

Should have seen the look on assorted faces at half 5 last night, as they were trooping out on the way home, and there’s me set up with BT Sport via the laptop, the Celtic game beaming from the 50″ screen in the boardroom , feet on the table, a clutch of cold Czech lagers to hand.

    Magic.

My thoughts on big VVD are that we should encourage offers starting at 15 Million and we should use part of the funds to secure at least 3 players a left back a centre back and a creative midfielder. There is no point on trying to hang on to a player who wants to leave the big guy has done his bit for us and we should wish him well in any move.Whoever buys him is getting a class player. While we dont like losing quality players it will get known all over the football world if you are young and talented you will get your chance at Celtic to improve your game before moving on to a bigger club. H.H.

  6. Hunderbirds are Gone on

As ever, if VVD wants to go, then we should wish him well and get him tae flock.

Trying to keep players who don’t want to be with us is pointless. We do not get the effort or achievement we deserve of a contracted player, and an unhappy player can only disrupt harmony within the team.

    .

As Mike in Toronto just said, we are seen as a stepping stone to the honeypot leagues. This at least however allows us to attract up and coming talent of a decent level (Victor, Hooper etc), and if we block moves to honeypot leagues, we will struggle to attract quality youngsters in the first place.

    .

Not everyone on the planet is driven by the chase for more and more lucre, and although we may never see his like again, Henke showed that we do hold an attraction for some of a less avaricious nature. A few such players may be just around the corner, and for me anyway, this thought is a shining light on a cold dreich January Saturday, for a Scottish Cup Tie.

    .

Ps – for the avoidance of doubt Mario Balotelli is not one of those “of a less avaricious nature” that I had in mind.

Great result last night. Great credit to Ronnie, Broonie and the team. Onwards and upwards!

  8. JFH & Hunderbirds are gone,

    Reluctantly I agree re VVD.

The pitfalls of playing in Scotland have been well documented on here, but nevertheless players such as VVD are leaving us as a much better player than when they arrived. Any fee must reflect that.

  9. From BBC Scottish Football Gossip

Joey Barton admits he would love to sign for Celtic one day – but only if Rangers get promoted to the Scottish Premiership. (Sun)

An extra reason to cheer on Hibs.

No argument there. I should have said: “get him tae flock…… For a big fee”

For me, there is only one club whose name doesn’t merit respect.

    Qarabag are not that club.

We don’t like it when the name Celtic is misused, so why do some think it is smart to adopt Lineker’s recent sneering pronunciation of our recent opponent?

Well said that mhan; the casual racism on here is disconcerting to say the least, it is (almost) systemic.

Again, cheers. Good to see that you raised the issue. We are supposed to be better than that………….

And spot on BTW in your analogy , we do not like being referred to as septic, semtex etc.,

  13. Progressing with the site changes. Names in green now as you can see and no need to put a .

Between sentences now to create a space.

    Hopefully!

The site should also load faster and the iPad issue should be reduced at least.

The traffic has been high – over 16,000 on CQN for yesterday’s game and this would have slowed down access. We’ve removed various ads and large files so need to wait and see so feedback is appreciated – good and bad!

Just been to Celtic Park to collect copies of the new RONNY book hot off the presses. It costs £12 plus P&P from CQN via Amazon. Click on the bookstore link at top of site.

Also have some copies of Wee Green Book which has still to go up.

The CQN Bookstore is down to help the server issues and it is next for a facelift.

  14. THE BATTERED BUNNET

Quick question, which VPN do you use for BT Sports abroad? They are pretty sneaky with their location services. The App overrides the VPN on a tablet or phone.

    Cheers,

leftclick …. I always liked stubbs…. like him even more after that! Unless Sevco were offering minty moonbeam type of money (which we all know they can’t afford -and never honesly could), then Hibs would need to be mad to sell a top asset for buttons to possibly their key rival this year.

It wasn’t an issue. I just logged in as usual, and selected the channel.

Mind I’m still in the UK. Don’t know the script outside of that.

SkyGo is the same btw – wouldn’t be “Go” if it wasn’t.

  17. I only use the phrase ‘one of own’ to refer to the fact that he is a Celtic suporter who has come through the academy. I have only coached school boy soccer teams and would admit that my knowledge is quite limited. However, NL and WGS both rate JF very highly. He clearly is a confidence player, as many wingers are, and I wonder how Sterling will cope this season as there were issues with his confidence last year.

Players are different and fans are different. Some fans see their role as to support i.e. help the confidence of the team and individual players. Some fans believe that they have paid for the right to criticise and so on. IOh well, it takes all sorts.

  20. Well done Paul and all concerned for the new look CQN. Green monikers. Fantastic !!!!!

  21. Site looking better with ye olde monikers in green and definitely loading faster on the iPhone today. Keep up the good work!

the way cqn is growing is amazing, tongue in cheek will cqn be interested in streaming celtic matches in the future if the rights become available or is that too ambitious?

  23. The Battered Bunnet on

One of the (very) few civilising events down in Foreign over the past 20 years is the influx of immigrant beers from Eastern Europe. There’s a real Bud about the place.

  24. Reading have been fined £100,000 by the FA following a pitch invasion at the end of their FA Cup quarter-final against Bradford in March.

The club had denied the charge.

How do you deny a pitch invasion?
