20th century football rivalries won’t survive

1358

I remember the days (as a kid) when I’d get excited about Scotland-England games. At the time the countries were neck-and-neck in the number of wins each had over the other, we knew we’d punched well above our weight for a century. Since then, the inevitable verdict of demographics has taken its toll.

Now we know we’re a small nation, inconsequential to the football world, and we’ve even starved of developmental resources compared to the riches that ploughs into the English FA from Premier League TV deals each season.

The historical rivalry remains but I don’t feel it anymore and surely English fans care even less. They will have to dig deep to muster anything more than an interest in the three points available tonight, having long since moved onto Argentina and Germany for their rivalry. And Iceland, of course (forgive me).

Great sporting rivalries can endure for generations but that doesn’t mean they’ll last forever. Circumstances can change causing both sides to lose interest and find others to do battle with. None of our 20th century rivalries will survive. If we could bloody the nose of Barcelona for a third time in the 21st century later this month, our hit rate would place the Catalans in the crosshairs.  Bring it on.

Neganon, are you a shareholder? Are you going to the AGM on Wednesday?

If you’re not and you’d like to I can give you my ticket and votes. I cant make it next week. You can do with the votes as you please. Whit the hell, you can get right in about PL and get me sin die booted oota CP.

email me at my acgr @ outlook, com and I’ll send the stuff to you.

  2. Dr Ramesh

Maybe Leigh should have passed, but maybe the manager should be playing him more often, if that was next week with Dembelle channeling the same furrow the ball would be on a plate, but am afraid human instinct kicks in, Leigh wanted to make an impact to impress the guy who doesn’t pick him…..who cares, when the wee man dons the hoops he will be back to normal !

Leigh Griffiths could (will) break records while wearing the hoops

Connie is still a big Celtic Fan but now follows Paul’s team, Albion Rovers as well, great Ghuy.

Was in my cot last Friday when you replied about Trainspotting, loved it as a youngster (ish) watching it last week, was pretty mad, we all know plenty of Begbies, a few Rentons……..sad stuff, but probably just glad some of us came through the other side

Well well! Just turned out more or less than I thought it would. Just like watching games against Der Hun in the days of Gorman. Lots of chances early doors but no reward! Usual result other team down the park for first time goal. When was the last time a international team won 3 0 and they were allheaders?

At the end of the game I asked the assembled company whom Grant Hanley played for and not one knew! Must be some central defender if about 70 punters from England can’t tell you the answer!

A previous poster said we never win a game if GH was playing! Can you tell me the lottery numbers tomorrow!!

Anyway one other Scotland supporter in the pub! A Jam Tart with the kilt and the Lion Rampart flag round he shoulder

WELL DONE DEREK IN PINAR DE CAMPORVEDE!!

  6. Dr Ramesh, in relation to the Scotland game – spot on. Had Griff been playing more often this season and sitting on say 8 or 9 goals I think he would have passed. But like all strikers who are trying to regain their place they look on every possible shooting chance as an oportunity to score.

What I’d have loved would have been for Gordon to admit his failings in respect of the previous 2 games and suggest that tonigh’s approach will be the way we tackle the remaining games. And on that basis I’d stick with him. If not, God knows who we turn to next!

    GERRYFAETHEBRIG

Leigh is a wonderful player but his game came on leaps and bounds when he realised he could pass to his teammates. He actually scored more goals once he became aware of what was gong on around him. Roberts has to learn this as well. This is why Messi and Iniesta are such incredible players, they fully understand that it takes team work for themselves and their teams to reach full potential.

  8. ACGR says, no pumpin before the nuptials.......you two on

Almore, put me down for one of your calendars please. I’ll square you up at the next game you’re over for. We can kill two birds wi a stone and meet in Coai’s, if wee Fredo will have me back.

Gerry, Davie Hay could win a 30/70 tackle , according to my dad.

He told me Greig went into sort Davie out in a game, only one player was standing and had the ball after the challenge and it wasn’t Ham and Egg.

Its strange how the most unassuming guys off the pitch, can have a complete personality change after running on to it .

I know we bump our gums on here all the time, but I can assure you from primary school till now I have never met anybody with a bad word to say about M, working in the tax office I loved the Sevconians bad mouthing Paul Mc, when I knew for a fact his football interest was always the Rovers……..the tax cheats only attracted his attention because they broke the law (allegedly)

8 changes from Slovakia game, bizarrely Grant Hanley isn’t one of them.

    Gary67 on 11th November 2016 6:53 pm

It doesn’t matter what 9 other players WGS picks, as long as the choice for the two centre halfs comes from Hanley, Martin, Berra and Grier, we will qualify for nothing and lose the majority of games against any half decent team.

    —————————————————————

    Absolutely, utterly nailed.

What I was saying in the pub to many disillusioned- we can compete for an hour but with that defence there’s not a hope in hell of qualification.

Hanley’s ability to focus defensively, organise and pick up runners, and his ineptitude to direct an attacking free header goalmouth was the difference between a great 1-0 victory and the inevitable 0-3 pumping.

Any doubts – watch his ‘defensive’ header into CG’s arms – fortunately – in the first 10 minutes; not-a-fecking-clue what he was doing; head and hope.

Anyway, England wer elucvky and really pisher than they think, and at least we can now forget any International distraction and get back to the Hoops; no injuries; Barca yer tea’s oot…

  12. ACGR says, no pumpin before the nuptials.......you two on

GFTB, I saw your post and missed the start but was chuffed to be able to see it again. A very good call. Looking forward to seeing the new one.

Scotland? Deary me, watched it with my boy and had high hopes up until the second goal. Some good chances but failure to convert was the killer. England took the chances they had, we didn’t. Fair play to them.

Hopefully our four players come back injury free.

Ok, so Neg has gone or doesn’t want to be me at the AGM. Anyone who wants to go but doesn’t have an infvite, email me at acgr @ outlook.com.

First offer gets to be me next Wednesday.

  15. Dr Ramesh

Totally agree….. In a Celtic Jersey Leigh is actually (imo) far too unselfish, I want my strikers to score, tonight he should have passed but tonight was his 1st start in something like 3yrs so I actually like the fact he didn’t pass :-)

Anyway, I know a lot of people love Dembelle and that Bhoy could be a star but I would give our Leigh a 10yr contract and tell him going and beat that Swedish guys goals, Henrik only had 7yrs, our Leigh could have about 12 ! Unless Barca or Man Utd try and steal him :-)

  16. Sandman – not having a go, honestly, but gve me your 2 centre backs? Hanley is one of the worst I’ve seen but I’m honest enough to say that I can’t name a bunch of better candidates.

VFR, saw your reply to Al Mac, that’s a lot of cash for a mediocre dram.

I’m assuming the two you mentioned are blends? I’ve tried some of their high end blends and they’re good as far as blends go. Royal Salute is by far the best I’ve had.

    Total shite, as per.

You, who claim to have worked in corporate finance, ‘should’ know the job of the PLC board is to make money for the company.

That they do, stepping in to address the balance – as in this summer- to aright the ship by hiring BR and a host of now-invaluable players who got us to the promised land and enough megabucks to sustain the necessary domination.

    Job done. Well.

Of COURSE they weren’t going to upset the Hun gravy boat as the TV companies wedged up stupid amounts for ‘Old firm’ coverage.

The idiot, deluded Huns are executing their own suicide very nicely, without the need for intervention; certainly without Celtic being drawn into their grubby war of words. We seem to starve them of the oxygen of public squabble at every turn. Traynor, the obese fuckwit, must fume into his latte evevry new statement.

You earnestly profess to believing any different? You’re coming across as just another trolling roaster.

    ——————————————————–

    I know, Jobo.

Neither can I name better replacements.

Much has been made of our lack of creative ability, but a lot of international teams’ success has been built on sound defensive capabilities; we are bereft of any class at the back.

I was simply pointing out -or agreeign with G67 – we’re scuppered until there’s a higher class of defender available. However, I’d have rather seen a couple of promising Scottish-based centre-backs in there as opposed to Hanley and Berra, who appear to have been picked only because they play in the English championship. We may as well blood and experience a few of our home-based players if they’re the best we have down south. Remember, when Berra played with Hearts he was rated as just another SPL defender, notihng particularly special.

  27. For anyone else in the unfortunate position of having booked a holiday to USA pre neo nazi Trump our club ( 21 adults, 33 kids) have managed to renegotiate to West Coast Canida, no surcharge, more importantly no Neo Nazis

  28. Sandman. See the thing is that if we were as shit as our board from the moment the Hun died to today we would have all given up season books. Just like Ferguson last year we should have given up our books.

You see these blowhards only want your money. So Celtic went into hibernation with the Huns dead and the zombie yet to return but Davies like you and I are expected to pay up for years of treading water.

    Deluded are we.

Vfr and Paul 67 will no doubt tell us how clever our masters are and how we should wring our caps (like turkeybhoy).
