20th century football rivalries won’t survive

1358

I remember the days (as a kid) when I’d get excited about Scotland-England games. At the time the countries were neck-and-neck in the number of wins each had over the other, we knew we’d punched well above our weight for a century. Since then, the inevitable verdict of demographics has taken its toll.

Now we know we’re a small nation, inconsequential to the football world, and we’ve even starved of developmental resources compared to the riches that ploughs into the English FA from Premier League TV deals each season.

The historical rivalry remains but I don’t feel it anymore and surely English fans care even less. They will have to dig deep to muster anything more than an interest in the three points available tonight, having long since moved onto Argentina and Germany for their rivalry. And Iceland, of course (forgive me).

Great sporting rivalries can endure for generations but that doesn’t mean they’ll last forever. Circumstances can change causing both sides to lose interest and find others to do battle with. None of our 20th century rivalries will survive. If we could bloody the nose of Barcelona for a third time in the 21st century later this month, our hit rate would place the Catalans in the crosshairs.  Bring it on.

…CQN claims it is not lazy journalism. But it’s simply board propaganda.

Why do you take such interest in a blog that you infer is lazy journalism and The Board’s propaganda outlet?

Because he’s an attention seeking liar

WGS will be out of a job for sure very soon, but no way will it be another manager with any connections to Celtic that takes over, it will be back to a hun without a doubt.

With all due respect Paul is CQN

What you guys have brought to Cqn is not the real or true Cqn, I’ve said this from the day and hour it moved on from being a blog

This is not a personal dig at you but my feeling since the start of the ‘evolved’ Cqn

The exiled Tim I totally agree I was a terten army fan from 1976 to 1996 after that I would not pull back the curtains to watch them When you see the Blazers etc etc it makes my blood boil masons to the core that is why we are a shambles

  10. MWD: His (Neganon’s) opinions on Paul67 do not (totally concur with mine) although I to would prefer Paul67 to shine his torch inside the house more often than he does. We know we are a well run club financially but knowing that and being taken for mugs are two very different things. If it plays out that our suspicions are founded with regards Res12 and how the PLC have placed barriers in the way of the guys, one being the five year time bar which was information known by PLC and not passed on to Res12 guys, then I want to see Paul67 say something public ally on this.

    Totally agree.

As much as I am enjoying the current misery of second R&ng€rs, the fact that they exist, and Celtic PLC’s possible facilitation of this, is a huge concern for me. Resolution 12 needs to be addressed at next Wednesday’s AGM.

CELTIC CHAMPS ELECT on 11TH NOVEMBER 2016 9:54 PM

Nothing to do with WGS…. consider what he did for Celtic …. no, this is the result of prejudice in selection over many, many years ….what school did you go to ? took precedence over how good a football player are you ? …. look at what happened to the north of Ireland team when they select a manager for his qualities, irrespective of other non-football considerations….

  14. See over the course of the 21st Century. What my memory is telling me is that there have been 20 – 30 games involving Celtic and Scotland where we’ve lost – sometimes by a fair margin – but where I’ve felt that a couple of crucial chances / decisions have completely turned the game. My goodness, even in our last visit to Barca we had a penalty to draw level and who knows what might then have happened.

Feel pretty gutted for the players and manager tonight. That was never a 3 – 0 defeat.

But, on the brightside, I’m £55 up and might now just buy the Celtic pink strip instead………..

  15. BT

Yes I am well aware that you hold that view and that’s fine by me.

CQN as a blog is still there as before and that was very important to maintain. You have said you don’t read the rest but there’s plenty of effort put into it all for better or worse.

  16. WC

For my tuppenceworth – I don’t read the rest either

We had a great community, in certain ways we still do.

I just feel we have lost our soul – I can real off names ( and I know most of he faces) who have gone as we became a maze of income streams

No harm intended just expressing regret for a thing of beauty which has become a tad tainted.

    Exiled Tim

Yip – definitely said it. Singled him out in fact. Certainly didn’t see it myself!

  19. Lennybhoy. Because for over a decade CQN has misused its position to hide the truth from Celtic supporters. Despite that many on this blog have debated and argued against it.

Vfr is just the latest in a long line of so called posters to appear and try and discredit others. He of course like many others before him tries to belittle and dehumanise his opponents because that’s what those who can’t debate do. I’m old enough to track the age of social media from its beginning and troll is used by so many to try and deflect.

Winnings, with all due respect, what does CQN represent these days apart from another commercial venture.

If the blog isn’t willing to address our own issues its just a part of the propaganda machine (photographer or not).

  20. Glass2/3

When we watch a game, most of us see the game more or less the same, but at times we see the game very differently, we see some players making more of a contribution than others do.

WGS reckons that supporters know feck all, he won’t communicate with phone ins or any medium where supporters have a say, he thinks we are thick, many are, many are not, this imo is a major failing he has and it’s cosy him his job again, I doubt he will care mind you.

    HH

  21. And I thot that Mrs TET knew feck all about football, she asked me what the score was against the brits, I told her it was 3-0, no bad says she, that’s as good as a draw says she, no daft is the wife :-)

Many people have stopped posting, they may still be lurking etc. Many more read the articles now and CQN has grown to three times the size it was when the additional content was added.

Lots read Paul’s article and don’t venture into the comments.

Neganon 2 – I don’t have anything to do with what Paul writes. He seldom has anything to do with features or news stories posted. Earlier in this year I did all I could for the Res 12 guys and through these efforts their legal bills were paid, MM’s got a big donation and I got my name and address all over hun media.

  23. I see the mouthpiece is still on,so I am offski.

Funny,as I keep saying, when we win or are doing well as a team, you never hear from him.First chance he can get, ie,the upcoming AGM,he is on like a shot.

  24. I have purchased an inscribed stone around Big Billy’s statue to my big brother, 13 months older than me, the guy who showed me the way in so many things, a fella who made friends easy and tried to teach me the trick.

He may not be at his best just now but he’s still the example I look up to. I’ve no real words to express how I feel after tonight so I’ll borrow some. He is Forever Young in my mind.

This morning I am still in dreams

Of you and I both young as Spring

My step is cautious down to breakfast

The floor of dreams is eggshell thin.

There is a green mist in the trees

The toast is burnt to cindered crumbs

The sound of bees hum in my head

And I am all fingers and thumbs.

I’ve been sleeping now for hours

I can’t seem to wake me up

Getting rained on in the shower

    Fumbling with the coffee cup

Deep down I know I’m in a mist

And that really I’m not even trying

For I have always been like this

    Whenever I’ve been flying.

I drag a comb through knots of dreams

For when I shave I must address

This image mirrored back at me

    That’s weathered in time’s wilderness,

Whilst yours is fixed in summer light

Not creased or lined and smudged with age

A new print from time’s negative

A red dot on a linen page.

There is a green mist in the trees

Along the river known to me

There is blue mist in the grass

And I am lost and all at sea.

    Hail Hail Danny

Was the original Cqn from many years back open to all ?

Now many years later when “all” post …. Hopefully I can trudge by the politics but as many have posted if you don’t break the unbroken rules surely anybody can post …..

    Negannon2

Surely some have their suspicions, you referenced me in a post “people like GFTB” when talking about our team maybe maybe making the CL group stages with a couple of additions, the suspicions appear more prevalent when we do make the CL group stages with the majority of the team you ran down then………. No posts ? Surely as a Celtic fan you’d be happy at the majority of the players that you totally wrote off made the CL group stages but again……no posts

In fairness to NegAnon he has been one of the most consistent commentators on this blog. Whilst Paul67 is not the messiah, he’s not a naughty boy either in my eyes. We might not agree with his blogs but he gives a civil forum for us debate on and I really don’t think he is a Board mouthpiece.

In saying that, there are loads of comments by those that know (fu** all) who like to congratulate themselves on their own ignorance and stupidity. They probably won’t know who they are as self awareness is not a strong point. They are not alone as the world is riddled with these TRiUMPhant lunatics.

Scotland played as well as we could and should have scored. We had various clear chances. very disappointed with Griffths. He should have passed to Snodgrass. It was like Griffiths in Delia’s first season. Shoot…

Can’t see who would do a better job than Strachan.
