20th century football rivalries won’t survive

1358

I remember the days (as a kid) when I’d get excited about Scotland-England games. At the time the countries were neck-and-neck in the number of wins each had over the other, we knew we’d punched well above our weight for a century. Since then, the inevitable verdict of demographics has taken its toll.

Now we know we’re a small nation, inconsequential to the football world, and we’ve even starved of developmental resources compared to the riches that ploughs into the English FA from Premier League TV deals each season.

The historical rivalry remains but I don’t feel it anymore and surely English fans care even less. They will have to dig deep to muster anything more than an interest in the three points available tonight, having long since moved onto Argentina and Germany for their rivalry. And Iceland, of course (forgive me).

Great sporting rivalries can endure for generations but that doesn’t mean they’ll last forever. Circumstances can change causing both sides to lose interest and find others to do battle with. None of our 20th century rivalries will survive. If we could bloody the nose of Barcelona for a third time in the 21st century later this month, our hit rate would place the Catalans in the crosshairs.  Bring it on.

  1. Scotland the better team with a crap defence. Biased I may be but Wallace at fault in one way or another for all three goals. His positional sense is awful.

England are really poor but have a touch more quality.

Just because fools with too much money pay these guys stupid wages, doesn’t mean they are that much better than those in ‘lesser’ leagues.

  2. VFR

I happen to believe the guy is a Celtic supporter. And I also happen to agree with a lot of what he says “frequently”. We differ in that I take joy in watching and supporting the team as much as I can and can afford to.

Tonight though he pissed me off with his last comment due to the fact his first was commenting on James Forrest blog which if he had read he would have known there was an upcoming Celtic PLC AGM. Also being a Celtic support with such an interest as he purports to have in Res12 whether or not he thinks it will bare fruits or otherwise he also would have known that.

So you may be right in that he is a troll and I may now go back to my default position with regards his views of a couple of years ago and again treat him as such.

Tonight proves they really are much better than us lesser league players, despite being massively overpaid.

If you think that I’m PC you’ve never met me – happy to share a pint

I simply stated a fact – it was a tennis ball – a wee bit funny, that’s all

  5. Vfr a troll is clearly someone who doesn’t hold your views. I remember paul67 being the “voice” of the Celtic supporter in the first “old firm” meeting since the Huns were liquidated. He told the media how much he loved these games.

He is a proponent of the big lie.

He has enjoyed laughing at the Huns etc but has also sold us all down the river.

But hey guys like vfr can spout his right wing bike and accuse any dissenting voice of being a troll.

CQN claims it is not lazy journalism. But it’s simply board propaganda.

MWD, he may very well be a Tim but nevertheless I have never seen him post anything positive.

Anything worth reading in his posts is obscured by the negative and scurrilous comments he makes. His accusations against Paul67 are outrageous IMHO.

    Classic trolling.

    Neganon isn’t a troll

He has been here longer than most on here and is entitled to his opinion as much as any of us. I’ve had a run in with neg but he is a Celtic man and now that Brendan has saved the CEO neck people want to dig him.

I agree with TeT though about P67 taking money from the media

He has though, rightly or wrongly made a name for himself by putting his head on the block by having the balks to start CQN

  11. My opinion, for what it is worth, on Neganon 2? I believe him to be a Celtic man, I cannot understand his obsession with ” racist Scotland” but that is his opinion. I happen to disagree with him and he has never convinced me otherwise .

Life goes on….bigger things to concern myself with.

  12. vfr800@girfuy.co.uk on

BLANTYRETIM, he’s a very clever and skilful troll. He sows discord regularly on a couple of topics and takes the opportunity to have a go at Paul67 as well.

He may be a Tim; he may have been on here for a long time; he is entitled to an opinion. None of that I take issue with.

However, IMHO, he behaves like a troll.

Look on the bright side. England appoint Southgate and keep Rooney in the team. Go into the WC thinking they’ll win it.

  15. VFR

There was a time I did not believe he was a Tim. His opinions on the PLC align with mine most of the time.

His opinions on Paul67 do not although I to would prefer Paul67 to shine his torch inside the house more often than he does. We know we are a well run club financially but knowing that and being taken for mugs are two very different things. If it plays out that our suspicions are founded with regards Res12 and how the PLC have placed barriers in the way of the guys, one being the five year time bar which was information known by PLC and not passed on to Res12 guys, then I want to see Paul67 say something public ally on this. Otherwise his blog, to me becomes obsolete and no longer relevant to me.

I do not however for a minute believe Paul67 accepts a penny for anything he does media wise and I expect any monies paid to him, knowing him, go to charity. I hold him in too much regard to distrust him that way. That is the stuff of your man PZJ_54 the state aid bigot. If that is Neganons level that is the level I see him at. And yes again, maybe a Tim, possibly, but also a troll after his muttering tonight. There is no otter conclusion I can come to.

Doesn’t change my position on PLC and my hope that if the inevitable does happen Paul67 does comment and loudly in support of the Res12 guys.

  17. And ……….. surely the last time we see the pink strip

Unbelievably – because we have a 1st strip with white sleeves we can’t wear it against any team in white – the SFA couldn’t run a two ticket raffle

  18. RobertTressell

I agree with you, we are imo just a couple away from a very decent team, I also agree that players who get paid squillions are not always worth the extra they get paid.

It’s all about the team, I trust Brendan to mould us into a team that can challange in europe.

I saw Klopp the ohter week when asked if this team was better that Brendan’s, he was right when he said they were very different teams, but he acknowledged that a lot of the players he has were Brendan’s and they have more experience so they would be better.

If Brendan gets the support from the suits he deserves he will see us right, if not he will walk.

The shit he has to put up with outwith football in scotland would make most walk, interesting times ahead.

Th PLC Board certainly need to be under scrutiny, I certainly agree with that.

The Res 12 guys have worked tirelessly and deserve all credit and the Board MUST be called out if they don’t respond next week.

  20. From Wiki

Scotland have not always played in dark blue; on a number of occasions between 1881 and 1951 they played in the primrose and pink racing colours of Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery. A former Prime Minister, Lord Rosebery was an influential figure in Scottish football, serving as honorary President of the Scottish Football Association and Edinburgh team Hearts. His colours were used most frequently in the first decade of the twentieth century, but were discontinued in 1909. The colours were briefly reprised in 1949, and were last used against France in 1951. In 1900, when Scotland defeated England 4–1. Lord Rosebery remarked, “I have never seen my colours so well sported since Ladas won the Derby”.[102] Rosebery colours were revived as a change kit for the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying matches
