20th century football rivalries won’t survive

1358

I remember the days (as a kid) when I’d get excited about Scotland-England games. At the time the countries were neck-and-neck in the number of wins each had over the other, we knew we’d punched well above our weight for a century. Since then, the inevitable verdict of demographics has taken its toll.

Now we know we’re a small nation, inconsequential to the football world, and we’ve even starved of developmental resources compared to the riches that ploughs into the English FA from Premier League TV deals each season.

The historical rivalry remains but I don’t feel it anymore and surely English fans care even less. They will have to dig deep to muster anything more than an interest in the three points available tonight, having long since moved onto Argentina and Germany for their rivalry. And Iceland, of course (forgive me).

Great sporting rivalries can endure for generations but that doesn’t mean they’ll last forever. Circumstances can change causing both sides to lose interest and find others to do battle with. None of our 20th century rivalries will survive. If we could bloody the nose of Barcelona for a third time in the 21st century later this month, our hit rate would place the Catalans in the crosshairs.  Bring it on.

  1. I’ll be cheering on Scotland to win tonight, I can understand some posters not bothering but just staying up the road I would walk down with my mates and get lifts into the games when young.

It was only when I got older I realised the way some in the crowd hated the Celtic players, feck them, those same huns are anti everything now.

    C’mon Scotland.

Put STV on and Miller was on so I turned to ITV. Even worse – Fat Sally!

We all made of ourselves because we didn’t want to be those who where treated with distain for being born to the wrong family ( not privileged)

Do you give their children a chance or just leave them to fester and die

Like you I want Scotland to win, nothing compared to Celtic, for me it is a different sport, but seemingly (the Mrs tells me) when speaking about Scotland to MissGFTB by all accounts am very passionate, by the way, stuff the Huns Scotland is our country as well :-)

Surely with Lee Wallace in the team we don’t need anyone else? Maybe a keeper

Having spent last few days in Hampshire I am astounded how many people don’t wear a poppy.

  7. The sweaty socks have started ok.

Begs the question of why were they so negative & passive against Lithuania ?

I am getting all partisan watching this.

Edge of the seat stuff as I get ready to over analyse wee jamesie

  9. Crap game between two poor teams. The difference is we know we’re rubbish, they think they’re good. England, one chance, one goal. Scotland, Hanley sitter and Griffiths should have played Snodgrass through. As

One as Stones thinks he’s Messi then Scotland have a chance of scoring. Unfortunately we will lose more goals as we don’t have a defence.

  10. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Even game so far. Definitely chances for Scotland. Can’t go 2-0 down though.

Rose should have been booked for diving and Henderson for dissent.

Chances for Snodgrass to get free-kicks from the right in at the near post – Hart is lining up WAY to the far side.

  11. I have read the “call to arms” in relation to res 12 with yet another ago looming.

James Forrest can’t think of why Celtic won’t act? Really?

This whole episode has exposed what a fraud the Scottish game is. How wanton the corruption and cheating is.

The story that has unfolded is that Celtics board has been central and party to ensuring that there would be no questioning of the cheating and indeed in propping up the big lie.

This has always been about money. And racism makes money in Scotland. You are the victims (as am I). But clearly it’s worth us being victims to those who run Celtic.

With res12 we have heard it all. Celtic will act we have been told. But they haven’t. Sorry res12 guys but you have always been played. But still you are reluctant to speak out. Still. Maybe forever?

All this and our erstwhile host continues to cheerleader the board and refuses to directly confront their unwillingness to front up to the corruption.

CQN has been utterly hypocritical for years. Willingly to talk and gloat endlessly at the Hun omnishambles but never once holding the Celtic board accountable for their actions and inactions.

I have said it before and do so again a. That makes us worse than the Huns. They are deluded, simpleton racists. We are fully aware of the betrayal of our own board. Yet we say and do nothing. Worse. Paul refuses to confront it but will appear on the msm he is so fond of deriding (for a fee of course).

    Wanton hypocracy.

So as we yet again steel ourselves for lot of nonsense at the age. The board remain intact from last years debacle where the chairman accused supporters of criminal racism for daring to raise concerns.

It’s not so much as lip service we are paid as treated with utter contempt.

Still they will all pay themselves super duper bonuses.

    Happy?
