20th century football rivalries won’t survive

1358

I remember the days (as a kid) when I’d get excited about Scotland-England games. At the time the countries were neck-and-neck in the number of wins each had over the other, we knew we’d punched well above our weight for a century. Since then, the inevitable verdict of demographics has taken its toll.

Now we know we’re a small nation, inconsequential to the football world, and we’ve even starved of developmental resources compared to the riches that ploughs into the English FA from Premier League TV deals each season.

The historical rivalry remains but I don’t feel it anymore and surely English fans care even less. They will have to dig deep to muster anything more than an interest in the three points available tonight, having long since moved onto Argentina and Germany for their rivalry. And Iceland, of course (forgive me).

Great sporting rivalries can endure for generations but that doesn’t mean they’ll last forever. Circumstances can change causing both sides to lose interest and find others to do battle with. None of our 20th century rivalries will survive. If we could bloody the nose of Barcelona for a third time in the 21st century later this month, our hit rate would place the Catalans in the crosshairs.  Bring it on.

International football is well past it’s sell by date.

When once it was a showcase of a country’s best talent, it is now, certainly for UK teams, a second class product.

Top teams in the big leagues have superior teams to most, if not all, International ones.

Going back a number of years, the Finals of the major tournaments have been a disappointment, even though the top countries have top players playing.

These players have, in the most part, had played in long, competitive leagues, with added International and European competitions thrown in.

By the time the finals come round, they are jaded and it shows.

For them, it is all about club football, where they earn their massive wages and that has to be protected.

For me, International football is just a festival of flag waving jingoism, which obscures the fact that it is no more relevant than a souped up testimonial game.

Aye, they would have us believe it didn’t happen! A direct quote from Roosevelt:

“We have got to be tough with the Germany and I mean the German people not just the Nazis. We either have to castrate the German people, kill them or treat them in such a manner so they will never rise again.”

He actually put that in writing! Even though Roosevelt died in 1945 and Morgenthau was out of office in 1945, it was in place until 1947 before even those American politicians and “strategists” in favour of it realised they would have to change policy!

Britain is also shamed by agreeing to even the “watered down” version that came into play!

  6. Well, that ruined my lunch.

The sight of Le Petite Merde, smugly smiling, in blue, still burns the eyes memory even after all these years.

A few months back I had an idea of writing something about that period and looked on Yous Tube to kick the old memory box into life of how successful he was at R*ngers. There is a reel of all his goals for them.

There is a sense of non-plussedness apart from one goal: a last minute winner against us where it is hugging bedlam. But, again, he always had that arrogant air.

What I do remember is that I attended a school where I was in the minority and I’m surprised that some say he was never accepted. He was. He was just never loved the way we loved him or they loved the other big names that were there at the time. He scored goals and played well for them. To your normal football fan and non-bigot that’s good enough for acceptance.

Also, I’m surprised, at the detest, some still have. From my experience the hate dispelled very quickly and by the time he was playing for Falkirk and Hearts against us the rabid hatred had disappeared as we had other things to worry about and a mercenary footballer was the least of our worries.

Yeah, the picture sends me back to a caravan park in Leven; hearing the news and the distraught depressive feeling that only 14 year old obsessive can get, but I always liked Brian McClair more anyway.

It was the same then and the same now.

When I look back I just see another chapter of largesse that eventually led to their demise. Works for me.

I’m a bit behind but what is this not paying tax thing that is mentioned regarding him?

They have much better players but they are not a great team. I fancy Scotland to get a result. Maybe even a win (depending on who is playing!).

Over 6M Germans died of starvation; in excess of another 5M killed in post-war Germany; enormous increase in infant mortality rate; destruction of the industrial base. Not a good time for humanity at all: to the victors, the spoils indeed.

Not started David Low’s book. The problem with reading on the iPad is that I am split between 3 books at the moment because it’s easy to carry them all around! This will probably make 4 because I’ve already read the intro and skimmed chapter one! When it was actual books, it was one at a time!
