Spectre of Celtic and wincing at financial realities

1141

I winced slightly reading that Deliotte’s suggested Celtic were a ‘top 40’ club in terms of turnover.  The days we featured in their annual Top 20 report are long gone, lost in the raft of TV deals which flooded into England, France and elsewhere.

This is a problem for Celtic but at least we have a decent shot at Champions League income each year.  Others in Scottish football have been left to wither on the vine (phrase of the week), as the likes of AFC Bournemouth cherry-pick their talent.

Celtic need a solution to help them compete with their peer-group of European heavy-weights but the solution has to accommodate the other top Premiership clubs.  Dundee United have the ability to produce remarkable talent, if only they had the TV deal to allow them to retain it long enough to build a team.  The same could be said for Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Inverness and Ross County.

Scottish football would benefit enormously by federating with a neighbour.

You would think after administration and liquidation those who look to Ibrox for their football fix would, to adopt a popular phrase around those parts, have suffered enough from financial ‘ambition’.  Not a bit of it, it seems.  Not when the spectre of “being battered” by Celtic looms like an enormous green and white tidal wave.

For the last 12 years of its existence, Dave King was one of the non-executive directors of Rangers, paid to ensure that financial controls and risk management [role of non-execs defined by government 2003 Higgs Report]were in place.  I am not being glib or shameless when I say he did a remarkable job.

With Newco appearing to be in some financial distress, King told the Daily Mail he opposes planned cutbacks: ‘If we cut the club back to a level that’s just enough to win the League One or the Championship then that’s fine. But the gap between ourselves and Celtic when we get to the Premiership will be obvious.

“But I don’t feel the club should respond by cutting the costs to the point of saying ‘we only have to do what is necessary to beat East Fife or whoever.

“Because if you do that Celtic will build up to 10-in-a-row and we could be so far behind them that even when we are back in the Premiership we are  not in a position to catch up.

“We cannot risk going to Celtic Park and being battered 6-0.”

Those trying to keep Newco Rangers afloat will not welcome suggestions that current shareholders don’t have the “appetite or willingness to invest”, a few months before they will ask fans to buy season tickets.

Learn your lesson, there is no shame in losing 6-0 to Celtic, this is sport, bad results can happen, but there is enormous shame in failing to live within your means.

I’m off to contemplate 10-in-a-row for a while. To hyphenate or not?

It’s not like Celtic will sign LeFondre or Partridge eh ?

Merely Celtic supporters opining. But a Short fuse determining our targets ? Do you mean like Chris Sutton’s short fuse ?

Sorry but I haven’t seen anywhere that Paul has made the suggestion that NL doesn’t target and sign his own players.

Firstly, that would be questioning the board which isn’t part of Paul’s plan judging by recent articles.

Secondly, I just can’t believe that’s the state of transfer policy at Celtic.

  3. I get Easley distracted supporting Celtic, Neil Lennon, PL , and the board, as I love my team and will defend them to the hilt against negative postings, and Hun postings.

What was that you where saying?

Having said that there are quite a few on this site who appear just as madly loyal. Step forward tonydonnely. I’m afraid our club just won’t go the extra mile to sign a decent striker (surely there must be more midfielders we can sign??). But good ole tonydonnely continues to be happy with the board. Tony aren’t you paying attention when Paul tells you Neil has no say in our transfer targets?

  4. I would be more than happy with Griffiths.

31 goals for a struggling Hibs.

Seriously think he could score 50 for us.

    A bargain price as well

  5. PS

Paul tells me (personally ) nothing, he has a blog and states his opinions, same as everyone else in here (including Huns) I don’t get lead by the nose, I say what I think, like it or lump it, that’s me, and I doubt very much if Paul has a problem with that.

2nd thoughts mate, maybe Partridge is here to be the new Deidco boss. Would def increase the gravitas quotient and tactical nous.

    ………………………………………………..

Well going by that statement Neil Lennon must share the the same attributes as TonyD in being blindly loyal to the board

If Neil Lennon was unhappy regarding the signing targets situation I am quite sure he would be able to secure a job elsewhere allowing him a free rein and an opportunity to be his own man

  9. Griffiths?

Ex Hibbee who looked great there with some class finishes. Hasn’t completely wowed in England. A penchant for dubious off field antics. Def sufficiently good for domestic football but unlikely to make a major impact against better CL defences….

Don’t we already have one of them???

Tony just as you see Lawwell as flawless, I and many others see his errors and misjudgements.

I can just about understand his ‘doing and spending enough and no more’, but I agree with many who say he lacks ambition.

However PL has a duty to defend the club and support against cheap slurs from Ibrox, the likes of which he got from Green and McCoist. He let me down anyway.

  12. Keep Sammi?…Buy.LeFondre?……..Buy Griffiths?

  14. Hamiltontim if you look back at the articles which point out that football managers aren’t very good at spending money then what you see is what happens at cp. The view is that managers should coach the team only and leave the buying to those who are commercially focused (in our case mr lawwell). This is why you end up with loads of midfielders and defenders because you buy only what you believe will make money. It’s also why we end up trying to get chinese players etc etc because Peter sees it as a good marketing opportunity.

Tony so you will defend celtic against pesky celtic fans asking awkward questions? No matter what celtic do?

  15. BCW

    Yeah mate , remember that.

    Hope we do pursue Griffiths.

He could score loads for us.

    Very talented boy.

If we could get Snodgrass & Griffiths I’d be delighted

  16. Morning all. The ole BBC weather forecaster was telling us that today would be one of sunshine and showers. No doon here, I can assure her. It has been wet and very windy since way before dawn.

I wonder if McCoist has apologised yet for any of his inflammatory proven lies? At the very least, he put a few people in serious danger, never mind unnecessarily exascerbating anti-Celtic feeling among his fellow follow followers. Lowest of the low.

Griffiths comes with too much baggage. Our manager has already sent one of our players to Belgium to try and help him to grow up.

  17. Joe Filippis Haircut on

My concern about Griffiths is if we sign him he has a poor reputation off the field and with Stoksie we could have two bad Bhoys not showing a good lead to our younger players my opinion only .H.H.

    Neganon

I didn’t read those articles the same as you then. My take was that Paul was trying to make excuses for poor signings and it may be the reason that we don’t get a prolific striker in this window.

  19. Marrakesh Express

We received an article for the next edition of CQN Magazine – out next week- which was very much pro Peter Lawwell. It is a legitimate view of a Celtic supporter, so therefore merits inclusion. I did however post on here asking for someone to write the counter argument but no-one came forward. As you have just mentioned the subject, I wonder of you would fancy putting your thoughts on PL on an email to me for us to publish in the magazine? Email address is david@CQNMagazine.com

On one view I’d be happy to accept that Lenny isn’t sourcing our signings, particularly the forwards

If he is fully responsible then clearly his judgement is extremely flawed in that area

Either way the forwards signed of late have been poor to dreadful with an almost complete inability to discharge their primary function ….scoring goals

  23. It is utterly hilarious how the hun cheating continues to bite them firmly in the bahookie.

Tait’s famous last wish to go out in a blaze of glory refereeing his beloved (now deid) RFC and adding on sufficient time to sink them.

Now their lavish overspending on players they didn’t need (or shouldn’t have had Sally been any good – especially when we all know now that spending outrageous sums of money doesn’t give you a sporting advantage – thank you LNS for your infamous words of ‘wisdom’) which they were allowed to buy with the cooperation of the SFA by conveniently giving them the window periods to spend, spend, spend, has ultimately scuppered them – unless they persuade The Bunnet to save them too.

Roll on calling in the receiver.

    I have a complaint however.

I am sworn off all sweets. No jelly and ice cream allowed.

Och well. A wee dram instead.

The sacrifices I have to make…..

  24. Anto Stokes is a far better footballer than Griffiths in my opinion.

Create chances for Anto and he will score goals…….simples.

    Similarly,don’t create chances for Griffiths and he won’t score either……simples x 2

    We need a player like Robert Snodgrass to ermmmmm……CREATE CHANCES….simples x 3

Am I missing something here, before I go bang my head on the wall?

Regarding the reported Celtic interest in Leigh Griffiths. I think he is a great player at domestic level. However, I would hope that we are setting our sights much higher than LG or ‘Sparky’ as the Hibs fans call him. He has a lot of baggage away from the football field and would be a gift for the meeja in terms of being able to increase their anti-Celtic stories output.

Neil Lennon also targeted Hooper so it’s not all been abject.

I’ve long said that if you’re signing a striker make sure that he’s been prolific at his previous club.

I know it’s not a foolproof policy but it gives you a better chance of signing someone who’ll do what you’re looking for; score goals.
