Nailed-on starters missing isn’t always good news

272

It’s always dangerous to welcome news that an opponent will be without an automatic first choice player – think back to last month, when news of Leigh Griffiths’ injury broke, forcing Brendan Rodgers into playing Moussa Dembele against Newco. Well-resourced teams have strong squads, but for every Dembele waiting in the wings, there are a dozen or more Pukkis.

So while news that Borussia Monchengladbach are likely to be without striker, Raffael, winger, Thorgan Hazard and central defender, Andreas Christensen, is encouraging, it’s no more than that. It’s little more than Celtic replacing Roberts, Griffiths and Sviatchenko (three nailed-on starters at the beginning of the season) with Forrest, Dembele and Simunovic.

The absences will have no impact on Brendan Rodgers game planning, but it might play on the mind of Gladbach manager, Andre Schubert, who is dealing with the first run of sustained disappointing results since he was promoted from Gladbach reserve coach last season.

Manchester City looked vastly more accomplished than Gladbach when they met in the opening group game, so the draw City took at Celtic Park, and the manner in which they were forced to fight for it, is likely to convince Schubert that a point would be a good result for his team.

A draw would be an inconclusive result for both teams chances of finishing above the other, but a win for either team would be the most important result of the group.

Looking for tickets for the semi-final on Sunday?

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have given us a pair of tickets for the North Stand (Celtic supporters area). Tickets are all sold, if you or your auntie’s brother’s son want one, this is one of the very few ways left of getting your hands on any!

The pair will be raffled together, to enter, email the address below with the correct spelling of Monchengladbach (clue, this is not a trick question).

I’m not taking this too seriously, so all entries will be considered. Here’s the thing, though, we should be doing what we can for the Celtic Foundation on such a great occasion. While you are entering, why don’t you make a donation to YOUR Foundation here.

The last competition winner made a donation. It was a coincidence. Honest…….

Entries to competition@celticquicknews.co.uk . Competition closes at 14:00 on Thursday, winner will be informed that day. Make sure I have contact details for you, it wouldn’t be the first time someone won a CQN competition and didn’t check their email until after the event.

Good luck, and enormous thanks to Intelligent Car Leasing.

For a short period we are shipping a FREE copy of Paul John Dykes acclaimed book, The Quality Street Gang, with Andy Lynch’s autobiography, Hoops, Stars & Stripes, written with Paul. That’s two quality books for £14.99 + p&p – an absolute bargain.

Wednesday’s game is potentially the most important game of our season. Potentially. If we win we go four points in front of Borussia, self-evident I know, but that would leave the Prussians (@BSR) needing to get something from either the Nou Camp or against City at home in the last group game to overhaul us for third place and the Europa League place. And that is assuming they beat us over there in Westphalia. That said we are playing a club who qualified for the CL from the Bundesliga, a team who mid-table or no are schooled at that level. Fancy ourselves to score of course, so once again if we defend well we can win. No gimme, as tough a task as we could ask for mid group, but as I say as big a game as they come at this point in our season.

After a diagnosis of Plantar Fasciitis on Sunday, a combined remedy of Ibuprofen capsules, Ibuprofen gel and my Cherry Reds laced up tighter than TD67 on the Green Brigade, I can report significant progress.

From the excruciating pain and nae fitba’ on Saturday I can report nothing but a dull ache today so I will be fighting fit for a pre match aperitif wi’ ACGR, Hot Smoked and MNCelt and his bhoy in Coias.

(Only downside is the Cherry Reds with red laces look incongruous with a business suit. Suited and booted doesn’t always work.)

  17. Had the displeasure of watching last night’s Liverpool Manure game.Being fond of the Scouse reds I wanted them to win but would have accepted just having some football to watch,it was dire with a capital IRE.I blame Mourinho.

I think Jose is a fraud.I know he’s had several trophy wins and has amassed a vast bank balance but his teams are,in footballing terms, poor. For all the successes he has had not one of his sides evoke memories of being ‘classic’.He suffocates style.Even when in charge of Real and all the superstars they had he resorted to spoiling tactics when up against other top sides. He leaves no footballing legacy. In my lifetime the game has had Ajax,Munich,Liverpool,AC Milan,Barcelona, all great teams who are remembered for their style as much as their successes;they made a mark on the game as a spectacle.Mourinho’s teams are largely forgettable for what they demonstrated on the pitch.

I know football is a results business and to some that’s all that matters but to me reall success is achieving with style. How many folk remember Steau or Red Star’s European Cup teams compared with our own Lions?

Jose may have filled trophy cabinets but he emptied our memories. And all with vast resources at big clubs, last night being anothr example of his limitations of style. He has only enriched himself not the game.

Losing your 4 best players is a massive loss for them.Having watched them, they are no Bayern,Dortmund. They have been poor this season.Their away form bad.If we play well,we will win. Many just remembering the Man city game, but going by results since, the 5-2 hammering of Happoel was a fantastic result. We can raise our game now.I am sure of a victory on wednesday.

Whenever I hear the name Borussia Mönchengladbach I immediately think of just one word — NETZER!

For those of us of a certain age, Gunter Netzer will be forever embedded in our memory as a midfield maestro with flowing blonde hair who could pass the ball like a god and had the swagger of a modern day pop star.

When many players still looked “old fashioned” Netzer seemed to represent everything that was modern about a footballer. Film star looks, supreme self-confidence and the footballing ability to back it up!

He was born in Monchengladbach and originally played for FC Monchengladbach before moving to Borussia when he was 19 years old.

He helped them gain promotion to the top league in 1965 and at a time when Bayern were Kings of German football, Netzer helped Borussia to not only challenge them but beat them to the league title. Within 5 years he made a real difference. With Netzer in the team, Borrusia became the first German club to win back to back titles in 1970 and ’71.

In some 230 games for the club, the midfielder scored 82 goals.

    Then, everything changed.

When Barcelona signed the talismanic Cruyff in 1973, Santiago Bernabeu responded by signing Netzer and Paul Breitner in 1974. Netzer would stay for three years in Madrid and in that time he would win La Liga twice and the Cope Del Re twice before moving on to Grasshoppers where he hung up the golden boots in 1977.

He played only 37 times for Germany and often argued that he and Wolfgang Overarth could not play in the same team together and so he more or less decided to play second fiddle to Overarth in the National team. Many would argue that he was the better player though no one could doubt Overarth’s class.

He was the runner-up in the Balon’ D’or in 1972 and was Germany’s player of the year in both 1972 and 73 leaving Beckenbaur, Muller, Overarth and others in his wake.

Later he became the general manager of Hamburg and completely transformed the club making them a real footballing forc,e and under his stewardship the club won the Bundesliga in 1978–79, 1981–82, 1982–83, The European Cup in 1983 and the Intercontinental Cup in the same year.

He was a very persuasive and forceful character as is demonstrated by the following story:

In 1973 Borussia were playing FC Koln in the final of the German Cup. Netzer did not start the game at all and instead he spent the entire game watching from the substitutes bench.

The game went into extra time with the score 0-0 and without warning Netzer stood up, took off his tracksuit and simply turned to the Borussia Manager and announced ” I am going to go and play now!”

He advised the linesman that he was coming on as a substitute and almost immediately play was stopped and Netzer effectively organised his own substitution.

Within three minutes of taking to the field, he scored the winning goal and brought the cup back to Monchengladbach for just the second time in their history.

    He was quite some character.

He could pick a pass, strike the ball with both feet, run like the wind and as the video shows he was not short of a bit of bulk when he needed to put his foot in.

He went on to found his own media company and I am told is a somewhat likeable bloke.

Have a look. Thank God he is not playing against us!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBJ_GJzv3Po

By the way we have nothing to fear from thus team at all. They rank only three or four places above us in European terms and we have defeated far higher ranking teams in the past.
