State aid advocates ready to help Rangers

588

Quite apart from this week’s admission by First Minister, Alex Salmond, that he has been arguing with HM Revenue and Customs to “for goodness sake get a settlement” with Rangers, I continue to receive reliable assurances that HMRC are coming under pressure from all political angles to effectively offer state aid to Rangers FC PLC (in administration).

In short, if HMRC acquiesce, Rangers will have their debt zeroed and will be out of administration with only their 10 point penalty to show for years of financial doping.

Fifa guidelines explicitly prevent governments from interfering in football.  State aid to any one club is about as explicit a contravention of Fifa rules as there can be.  This jeopardises the places of Scottish clubs in next season’s European competitions and could lead to the Scotland national team being banned from the World Cup qualifying group, due to start later this year.

It is the SFA’s job to insist that all state intervention in football stops immediately.  I urge you to write to the SFA chief executive, Stewart Regan, stewart.regan@scottishfa.co.uk and Uefa president, Michel Platini via his PA marion.haap@uefa.ch, asking them to take immediate action to stop all state interference in Scottish football.

Celtic have an excellent chance of Champions League football next season and we don’t want politicians of any colour getting Scottish teams banned from international competition.  The silence of the SFA on the subject, despite extensive media coverage, is very disconcerting.

It’s time for you to play your part in these important times.

  1. Not a letter writer usually, but I have a day off today. This one as been sent to UEFA copied to Stuart Reagan..(stole some of P67’s words for te text)

    —————-

    Dear Mr Platini,

I am a Scottish football supporter and for me sporting integrity is one of the main reasons why I love football. However, one team in Scotland has been operating in a way that I consider as ‘financial doping’.

Rangers FC are in administration and it has been reported that they have not been paying taxes to the UK government. They are also awaiting a decision on an appeal against a decision from the British Tax Authorities (HM Revenue and Customs) to pay £49 million in unpaid tax and penalties. In addition to this, Rangers FC are alleged to have withheld payments to other clubs in Scotland and throughout Europe for outstanding transfer fees.

During the period when these taxes were alleged not to have been not being paid, Rangers FC continued to invest and spend money that they apparently could not afford on players to help them compete in competitions in Scotland and Europe. This placed other well governed clubs – who operated well within their means – at a sporting disadvantage. If you gain an unfair advantage in sport in any way, I would call it cheating.

Now it has been reported that the Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond has been applying political pressure on HM Revenue and Customs to ‘get a settlement’ with Rangers. There are also reports that HMRC are coming under pressure from all political angles to effectively offer what would amount to state aid to Rangers FC. In short, if HMRC acquiesce, Rangers will have their debt zeroed and will be out of administration with only their 10 point penalty to show for years of cheating. That would be very wrong and would result in many fair minded fans turning their back on football.

Politics have no place in Football. Fifa guidelines explicitly prevent governments from interfering in football. State aid to any one club is about as explicit a contravention of Fifa rules as there can be. The actions of the Scottish First Minister could jeopardise the places of Scottish clubs in next season’s European competitions and could lead to the Scotland national team being banned from the World Cup qualifying group, due to start later this year.

Can you please assure me that UEFA will do everything they can to protect our sport and ensure that politicians in the UK and Scotland have no influence in the running of the game in Scotland. For the sake of sporting integrity and the good name of football can you also assure me that failed football clubs who have gained a sporting advantage by not paying taxes are not bailed out by state aid or benefit from political interference.

This state benefit, if it is allowed to happen would be extremely unfair to those clubs who have been operating legally and fairly, with the highest respect for sporting integrity. It would also be unfair to every UK and European citizen who have dutifully paid their taxes.

    Kind Regards,

Ally McCoist is holding out hope Daniel Cousin will turn out for Rangers, despite questions over his eligibility.

The Gabon striker is in the squad for Saturday’s home match with Kilmarnock, but is currently unregistered and is unable to feature.

Cousin was not registered with the Scottish Premier League before Rangers went into administration on Tuesday afternoon. League rules forbid clubs from signing players while they are subject to an insolvency event, but Cousin’s registration had been started beforehand.

Discussions with the SPL will continue on Friday with a view to the player being included and McCoist is staying positive he will able to call upon the 35-year-old.

“Daniel is a bit shell shocked at the moment, like the rest of us,” said McCoist.

“At this moment in time he is in the squad for tomorrow and we still have an opportunity of getting the signing through.

“I’m still very, very hopeful that we can get the bits of red tape and get through it.

“The players want Daniel still to come, we want him still to come, the supporters want him and most importantly Daniel still wants to come here. So we will keep telling them dafties what they want to hear”

Airdrie’s problems worsened when it was revealed that Rangers had arrested the club’s share of the gate receipts for Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie at Dundee United.

Airdrie v Rangers Airdrie’s finances have been tackled by David Murray

Ibrox chairman David Murray applied for an interdict, on behalf of his company Carnegie, for a debt of around £30,000 owed by Airdrie.

Mr Murray said: “I feel very sorry for Airdrie and their supporters but we’re running a business. We have given them repeated warnings and felt they were playing on our good nature.”

The Scottish Football Association described the move as “a private matter between the clubs” and made clear there had been no contact with either party.

    Quick question, though.

If the huns in administration get bailed, why should ANY company that falls under HMRC’s umbrella continue to paye tax etc?

There must be a number of company’s out there, much bigger than the cheats, and possibly in financial bother, who’d like the same considerations being afforded to the huns.

I do not include the banks in that group.

    Of course I don’t.

  11. Something worrying me with regards to Newco Rangers.

If they do form this new company and are looking to be parachuted back into the SPL (the sweetheart deal). This deal is basically the SPL agreeing to tear up the rule book on what would normally happen in the these circumstances and set a new unprecedented process which will most probably be bespoke to Rangers and not available to any clubs going forward. Who makes this decision? All the teams in the SPL? With 12 votes? Or is it the 5 or 6 members of the SPL board? If it´s the latter then I am worried………….

  15. Statement issued to IFA’s by Octopus, I will call their broker rep and see if I get any more.

Octopus Investments would like to clarify the position of Ticketus with regard to the current Glasgow Rangers coverage. Ticketus is one of the many entities into which Octopus Protected EIS invests – no other Octopus products are affected. Ticketus has purchased tickets for Glasgow Rangers games for a number of seasons in advance, as it has done for a number of years previously with the club. Ticketus does not lend money; Ticketus is the owner of assets – the tickets. Octopus is continuing to work with the administrators and Glasgow Rangers on this matter.

It is very important to note that Octopus Protected EIS has been designed with capital preservation in mind. Our Specialist Finance team, who manage the money on behalf of your clients, structure every investment with this objective as the key priority. Businesses are selected because of the relative predictability of revenue streams and appropriate security being available, and then the deals are designed to reduce the impact of risks to the capital preservation mandate.

Extensive due diligence is performed on counterparties in every deal, and numerous potential scenarios are modelled and prepared for in the way the deal is structured. Where appropriate, additional protection is provided through extensive contractual obligations placed on counterparties and in some cases third parties. But it should also be said that no trading activity is 100% risk-free and, whilst Octopus Protected EIS targets capital preservation, it cannot, and does not, guarantee it.

Octopus manages over £300 million on behalf of clients in Enterprise Investment Schemes, and we remain confident in the product, our approach to investment, and the ticketing model. The first three tranches of the product have matured and delivered what we said they would – EIS tax reliefs and capital preservation.

We hope that this information is useful to you and your clients, and that you remain a strong Octopus supporter. As and when it is appropriate to provide an update, we can assure you we will.

    Best regards

Manager: We’re focused on Hibs game

By: Mark Henderson on 17 Feb, 2012 15:02

EVENTS elsewhere have dominated discussion in Scottish football in recent weeks but Neil Lennon has insisted his players remained focused on preserving their winning run.

City rivals Rangers were placed into Administration this week and were handed an automatic 10-point deduction by the SPL, increasing Celtic’s lead at the SPL summit to 14 points.

However, the manager was adamant that collecting three points against Hibernian on Sunday, and extending their run of domestic victories to 18 games, was the only thought occupying his charges.

“I said last week all the backslapping that the players were getting from people makes no inroads into me whatsoever,” he said.

“We are at the forefront of a very good run and my and the players’ aim is to keep that run going for as long as we can. They are pretty proud of what they have achieved but they have won nothing yet, and that’s their incentive, regardless of what’s going on elsewhere.

“What’s happened to Rangers this week has not affected the players’ concentration levels, or distracted them, and I’m assuming that will be the case for the run-in as well.

“The players have come in and done their training and their eyes are on the game on Sunday.

“We can’t control what goes on elsewhere,” he added. “What we try and do is take care of our own business as best we can and we will continue to do that.

“We are in a financially strong footing and prospering as a club, and with the strategy that the board have put in the place, I’m sure we will continue to prosper.”

And, despite the Hoops’ healthier advantage in the title race, the Irishman held no concerns of complacency. A steely resolve and concentration has been the foundation of the recent run of victories and that won’t change, whatever happens outside the club.

“We won’t be champions until we get across the finishing line,” said the Hoops boss. “It’s as you were as far as we are concerned, and the players. They are fully committed to what they are trying to achieve here. There will no slacking off but there never was in the first place.

“People ask me about complacency creeping in but I haven’t seen any evidence of that in the past month or so, with performances and attitude. I will be demanding more of the same.

“My aim is to win the league, if we win by one point it doesn’t matter I will be delighted.

“There will be no devaluing a title win regardless of what goes on elsewhere because it’s nothing to do with our club and nothing to do with these players,” he added.

And focusing on football, the manager is anticipating a stern test at Easter Road on Sunday, with Pat Fenlon’s outfit showing signs of recovery following a number of changes during the January transfer window.

“Pat has rejigged it a bit,” said the Irishman. “He has bought players in. They have had a couple of decent results, they beat Kilmarnock and got a point at home against Aberdeen.

“They are fighting for their lives and there seems to be a better spirit about the place which comes with results and clean sheets.

“Easter Road is never easy. We had a good result in the quarter-final of the cup on the Wednesday night and then we played them at home and dropped two points.

“So the emphasis is to keep concentrating on getting a bigger gap between ourselves and the rest as we possibly can.”

Daniel Majstorovic is available for selection after his red card against Inverness Caley Thistle was rescinded, and the manager has been handed another boost with Thomas Rogne back in contention following a stiff calf.

New Bhoy, Mikael Lustig, has also returned to training and could be available for the games against Dunfermline and Motherwell next week.

Meanwhile, the Hoops boss has also revealed that he was keen to get Fraser Forster secured on a permanent deal from Newcastle United.

“I spoke to Fraser last Friday and we are hoping to speak to his agent and get a deal done as quickly as possible,” he added.

Neil Lennon was speaking ahead of Celtic’s Annual Charity Fund Dinner which takes place on March 1, 2012.
